  • When I was younger and shallower, I actually LIKED this show. Watching clips like this caused me to ask myself one question: "WTF was I thinking??"

  • did anyone else hear the laugh at 00:38

  • Imagen everybody love raymond without a laugh track... It would be massive intervals of silence after every mildly funny joke

  • It makes you feel awcward watching it with no one laughing... Not even me

  • Without a laughter track, mabye the drips who watch this show won't feel so inclined to watch it.

  • this show would still be really funny even without the laugh track, tho some shows...CBS...are not funny in the least without a laugh track

  • Married with Children is sometimes aired overseas without a laugh track. Half of the jokes work better, half are awkward.

  • Of course is not funny this way because the timing is based on the laugh track.

  • what's so funny? this is a sad show...

  • At 0.10 you didn't lower the laughter early enough

  • he looks like a crazy mental hehehe

  • Having cancer is more entertaining than this mindnumbing crap .. I remember in my teens when this was out i was the only one i knew who didnt like it .... if my friends watched this now theyd be eembarrassed, the show hasnt aged well ... well it was bollocks all along for superficial nitwits..

  • @favsncrap - what are you talking about? It's one of the best shows ever. And I'm not a "superficial nitwit".

  • The sampled ambient noise (to fill the silence) has Ross's breathing in it. Sounds like a bellows going on very quietly.

  • I laughed.

  • "Friends" is still interesting, with or without the laugh track.

Big Bang Theory sucks both ways, and removing the laugh track proves it.

  • Comment removed

  • still mildly funnier than Big Bang Theory

  • @amosthree fuck big bang theory. i couldnt even force myself to laugh at that show

  • This is a very creepy scene without a laugh track

  • So totally lame and pointless. Right after Phoebe says "I've already seen one" Rachel's mouth moves but we don't hear her dialog b/c obviously we would have heard the laughter from Phoebe's line.

  • Pinkie Pie: "MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT SHAHAP!!!!"

  • Friends had a live audience. The only time they used a laugh track was for cliffhangers or when they were on location. Watch behind the scenes of the show.

  • @MelissaLovesMakeup89 It had awful, unrealistic ambient people noises to mask the fact that it wasn't funny, ruin pacing, and pad the run time. Whether or not it was real people is kind of irrelevant.

  • Comment removed

  • @MelissaLovesMakeup89 Even when they shot on location they probably showed the show (or the exterior scenes) to the studio audience and recorded their reactions.

  • Friends had live audience's they just looped the none laughing background area over the laughing sections.

  • @1stNightingale Exactly.

  • I still found it funny, haha "Ive already seen one" Loool

Anyway, when the scene is actually shot, there genuinly is laughter present (in particular from the live audience) and thats why they pause.

  • This is why I prefer HIMYM. In HIMYM they actually laugh at each other's jokes, which is how it would happen in real life. It wouldn't be as bad without a laugh track as Friends is.

  • I HATE laugh tracks.

I like it alot better when they shoot in front of live studio audience.

  • @themightycelestial They did shoot in front of an audience. This clip had the laughs muted & ambient sound filled in to make it seem like it had no laughs. Though in a couple of spots a few giggles had to let through so as not to cut off the next line.

  • This was... so awkward, definitely it needs the laugh

  • I hear comedy everyday that I can laugh at without a laugh track behind it. If u can't laugh at this show without if then its obviously not funny

  • It's awkward without one XD

  • Haha, this is hilarious.

  • Wasn't funny, but added some drama at the end.

  • you've got to take into account the way the show is filmed. this show is filmed around laughter so there are pauses and gaps in the scene that wouldn't be there otherwise.

but it does go to show that the jokes themselves aren''t the best (granted it's only one scene). shows without laugh tracks can't fall back on a laugh track. jokes NEED to be funny.

  • I can't tell where the jokes are

  • @everyoneishomeless Yeah american humor fucked your brain, now you don't even recognize a joke without laughs in the background.

  • its isn't a laugh track only....they use a laugh track to augment to the live studio audience. with a huge awkward silence where the audience usually laughs, the show is pretty much an instant soap opera like the schizophrenic above me was talking about

  • Lawl!. Soooooooooooooooooooooo strange.

  • Okay, this is wrong, I tell you WRONG! IT NEEDS THE LAUGH TRACK!

  • AWWWWKWARD!

  • 0:38 I heard a laugh

  • laugh tracks don't tell u when to laugh..they just tell u when humor is being implied.

  • Its not that the show is BAD! People just dont realise how much a laugh track can really add to a comedy shows mood... its would be like being at standup show with one person as the audience... or perhaps even in a pub or nightclub with all the people holding their drinks, talking to one another... when theres no music at all in the background.. It just wouldnt 'feel' right...! btw you could NOT watch an entire episode without the laugh track.. LOL ;)

  • The pauses in their conversations seem REALLY awkward without the laugh track.

  • Its pretty funny without the laughing track.

  • I think I find it funnier without the laughing track.

  • The only funny thing is how unfunny it is.

  • I still found it funny.

  • it sounds like a soap opera

  • Actually there is such thing as a laugh track. Even though there is a live audience they can't just rely on the audience

  • you're all stupid. theres no "laugh track". a live audience is always present during a shooting of an episode, and clearly, all the editor for this video did was silent out the laughter and replace it with backround conversation noises recycled.

  • @DSCAccount HUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH

  • @DSCAccount Just like all comedy shows that are in front of a live audience, they add laughter to the scenes they didnt get the response they expected-eg when they did get it, they used the SAME recorded laughter more than once for the weaker jokes for the final tv episode! Its a cut and paste job on a pc. If this was the audiences genuine response all the time, they would have to be on some strong drugs-but only being a relation to the cast, or being on the casts wages could make that happen! ;)

  • @thedarkness667

lol i know every audience response isnt the same. like, im not sure if you remember, but the very beginning of this particular episode where chandler walks past Joeys entertainment centre and rips his suit, the laughter response was ridiculously fake, im just saying that laugh tracks werent added to the entire show..

  • This makes me feel uneasy.

  • Interesting. I'm off to watch Seinfeld laughtrack free. That was the sitcom I really hated.

  • 0:38 I can clearly hear laughter..

  • they seem like their really awkward around each other

  • So if you made a show with insane and retarded people, and then just added a laugh track, you'd have instant wacky sitcom characters.

  • I FUCKING HATE FRIENDS GAHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Awkward...

  • God, Friends didn't have a laugh track, it was an actual studio audience on it. It did had sweetening when the laughter from the audience wasn't loud enough.

  • this is why the brits can make people laugh without the laughing

  • Its because the script and direction is all based around having sound at those moments, of course it sounds retarded, the same script with direction allowing for no canned laughter would be much funnier.

  • @TheCherubeal Exactly! Even in the Script it says: ¨PAUSE FOR LAUGHTER¨.. Which is why it seems Awkward without the laughs.

  • Just like real life

  • awk-----ward

  • Why would anyone laugh at these parts?

  • US sitcoms suck

English sitcoms haven't used Background laughter since the early 90's and are funny without it

Ross comes across as a creepy peadophile on this clip and it is un funny

  • @DaleWF10 Miranda and Absolutely Fabulous are two excellent British sitcoms filmed in front of a live, studio audience. I guess AbFab did start in the early 90s though.

  • @AsparagusSpears Yeah the modern sitcom like Shameless, Inbetweeners, the Office, the Royal Family etc etc don't have the Background laughter

But shows like Friends and Two and a half men don't have a live studio audience its just recorded laughter what they use

  • @DaleWF10 Unless I'm horribly mistaken, Friends did in fact have a live studio audience.

  • @AsparagusSpears Spaced, Phoenix Nights, Black Books, Green Wing, Max and paddys road to nowhere

  • @DaleWF10 Black Books did have laughter... I can't believe I forgot, but Graham Linehan's sitcoms always have audience laughter. Father Ted, Black Books, The IT Crowd...

In the end it's the quality of the script that matters :) I probably do prefer English comedy, but I love American shows like 30 Rock too. Not because there is or isn't a laugh track, but 'cause it has a good script and good comedic actors.

  • @AsparagusSpears Yeah i know was by mistake that I wrote in Black Books and Inbetweeners is the best sitcom ever have you watched that :)

Its not that i don't like Background laughter it is okay when nessacary but American shows really over do it to the point where there is a Laugh after every sentance

the only show I really like made in the US is .. How I met your mother

Also like Simpsons and South Park but they are animated not sitcom :)

  • this is a bit unfair. you should choose a scene which is more about the jokes than an ending of an episode.

  • It's actually quite brilliant without the laugh track. Some shows sometimes work on a deeeper level without laugh tracks. It's adds drama.

  • but the show doesn't us a laugh track? I thought they were all filmed in front of studio audiences...

  • @ohdamnitsairon They are. That was edited to have none of the laughter in it, using the room sound from silent moments. Also, friends is brilliant.

  • wow that really sucks...

  • even with the laughing i rarely laugh

  • @ishockkmyself this is after rachel and ross' wedding in vegas!!

  • classic. I mean, everyone has a favorite show, and to each their own, if you don't know the back story to any sitcom, then you probably won't find the clip funny. Tv shows like this are still quite good, just for the fact that the do have a studio audience with actual laughter, unlike other shows.

  • LOL man this was really awkward

  • Just goes to show most american comedy is complete shit.

Sorry to break the news USA

  • @ALLenROOK Not necessarily. Only the laugh track sitcoms suck. Live studio audience shows are much more enjoyable, Everybody Loves Raymond being one of the many. :)

  • This episode was after Ross and Emily's wedding. The show stopped being funny after that so this proves nothing.

  • You can obviously hear where you cut out the laughter. The show was filmed infront of a live studio audience genius.

  • @necrocoprophilia ive watched it once and i wanted to kill myself straight after

  • all the worst shows use canned laughter (big bang theory/ 2 and a half men).

  • Turned into a nice pile of crap, viva le laugh track

  • no laughing track= Instant soap opera

  • with no laugh track friends is crap :P

  • i don't laugh at this show either... it's just so awkward and nobody really seems to like each other

  • awkward as fuck

  • Ok, Phoebe seems manic depressive and Ross seems retarded.

  • damn! Shit just got serious

  • I still thought it was pretty funny...

  • Maybe the show would have been better as a Drama?

Don't know but I like Friends.

  • its not funny when theres no laughter!

OMG and i am addicted to friends as well!:O

  • If this was supposed to be funny, then I agree that it failed. But most of the time, the laugh-track-free version fails because the timing is off. Timing is very, very important to comedy, and it is different when you are reacting to laughter to when you are not.

  • thats like one of the least funny scenes in the whole of friends + laugh tracks were only used in places that you couldnt possibly get an audience so here its a live audience not a laugh track lol

  • I can't say this was totally unfunny/uncomfortable as shows like Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory prove to be without a laugh track...it makes Ross come off as a total creeper and Phoebe as greatly disliked amongst her friends, but not unbearable to watch like the others.

  • I dont know when to laugh now...

  • Wait... where was the part where I was supposed to laugh?

  • Friends is just a decent sitcom. Funny how so many people thought it was the shiz in the 90s. The timeless shows stand out though; Cheers, Wonder Years, Mash, Seinfeld, Married With Children, Big Bang Theory, Etc. Friends is just humor for fat chicks with low IQs.

  • That awkward moment when the laugh track doesn't play and it makes you look like an idiot.

  • gull... this is just creepy and akward without the laugh track. They wrote the show differently knowing there wouldnt be a laugh track in mind. A laugh track is not just annoying, it changes how the writers write the show, and change how the driector and cast shoots it, cause they pause for laughter.

  • @myfacesp knowing there would be a laugh track in mind

  • @myfacesp laughtracks are used in the first place because the writers lack confidence in their ability to make people laugh without it. it should have been funny with or without pauses, and it was NOT.

  • @honkeytroll I totally agree with you, I'm just saying it made how they wrote the show differently. There are some shows where there was no intention of using a laugh track, so then when the studio demands a live audience, it screws the show up, and so in future episodes the writers write with a laugh track in mind and it screws up the episodes from conception. But yeah, even if they wrote this with no laugh track in mind, and restructured it a little bit, it still would not have been funny.

  • @myfacesp I wasn't arguing with you, honkeytroll. I think we can both agree it would have sucked either way lol

  • @myfacesp But what makes you think it's supposed to be funny? This is a rather sad part of the show.

  • They're all crackheads now lol.

  • Goes to show why I never liked Friends and never got into it.

Well for that matter, I make it a matter of principle to not watch tv shows that have laugh tracks. It actively impairs my ability to enjoy comedy now.

  • Man, this scene was awkward without the laugh track!

  • Good idea and pretty good job at doing it. Could have chosen a better scene, though.

  • It isn't funny because there isn't many jokes in this clip in particular.

  • at 0:17 it seems that ross and rachel are reacting to the fact that theres no laughter, as if theyre waiting for it.

  • A darker version of Friends

  • canned laughter... sucks.

  • the awkwardness of this actually makes it better, with chandler's jokes and no laughs the effect would be devastating

  • they're pausing to let the audience laugh and aren't drowned out....i think the awkwardness of phoebe makes funny anyway xD :L

  • To be honest, the fact that it looks like Phoebe's quirkiness is making everyone uncomfortable is funny as fuck if you ask me.

  • The comedy in this show was so crappy, I got a better laugh out of Two and a Half men.

  • Friends didn't have a "laugh track," it was filmed in front of an audience. So, you know, people are actually laughing at the jokes. That's why the pauses are so awkward; the actors are waiting for the laughter to subside from the audience before they move on to the next line so that it can be heard.

  • @fiervahl That's the point. If the show were genuinely funny, it wouldn't need the "please laugh here" pauses. Instead, it would have proper comedic timing on jokes they KNOW are funny.

  • @harpUnstrung68000 No, it's not the point. They're not pausing as a cue to laugh, they're pausing because people are laughing. If they plough through their lines without pausing, the dialogue gets lost in the laughter. You see this in older sitcoms where the actor starts to say their next line while the audience is still laughing, then stop, pause again, and start the line over when the audience has died down a bit. I'm no fan of canned laugh tracks, but a studio audience is not the same thing.

  • I couldn't even tell where the jokes were meant to be

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • AWKWARD...

  • this is how i feel when i watch it

  • @DreamsMusicUK out of interest, what sitcoms do you like?

  • friends are great stop trollin

  • 0:15 and 0:37

  • it's just so awkward!!!

  • Yeah this show really isn't funny, how is somebody saying ''always'' supposed to be funny?

  • Ross=Socio

  • no offence but its obvious its fake

  • This just makes it embarrasing

  • When I was younger and shallower, I actually LIKED this show. Watching clips like this caused me to ask myself one question: "WTF was I thinking???"

  • has anybody noticed that shows with laugh tracks really aren't that funny?

  • I laughed anyway! I love friendsx

  • This is so tense !

  • There's more truth to the story and characters without laughs.

  • Phoebe just sounds rude!

  • i lol'd, but only because it was so incredibly awkward, and he does sound like a sociopath

  • Omg, Phoebe is even MORE of a bitch without the laugh track.

  • I don't get what everyone means about it not being funny without the laughtrack, still think its lol and actually better because the laughtrack's just annoying.

  • who's watching this as they heard it on radio1?

  • @dominiclewis26 lol me they were talking about only laughing when you're in a room with people.

  • LMAO David Schwimmer is really freaking creepy without he laugh track. change the title to creepy Ross no laugh track.

  • Personally I think it's still funny, :)

  • laugh tracks are so offense. Tv show producers think audience members are so stupid that they need to tell us when to laugh, so they add in a laugh track.

  • How do I know when to laugh?

  • Yes, it was still funny during Phoebe's lines. But Ross's part is taken out of the context so it's not a fair game for his character!

  • I can't tell when I'm supposed to laugh.

  • @IJUSTLOVETURTLES Maybe when you got the results back from your iq test ;-)

  • Awkwardddd.

  • fuckin creepy lol
