funny how mark kermode disses directors..until they make a really god film: gore verbinski made Rango, Chris Columbus wrote the script for Gremlins, Guy Richie made Sherlock Holmes...so the only director hopelessly lost as far as artistry is concerned seems to be michael bay. i don't think the Pirates' films are as bad as some people say but kermode is right: they're stupid funfare and nothing beyond that but if you're bored one afternoon i don't think there's anything wrong with watching POTC.
I actually did like POTC. Not as much as everyone else did, didn't think it was worth all of the hype, but I found it a fun if overlong diversion and I thought that Depp's and Rush's performances were amusing, and that they did what most actors in Bruckheimer do and rose above the material. It was fun.
Once. One time, it was mildly amusing and innocuous. Let's all now enjoy it an move on with our lives. Unfortunately, by hyping it as a new classic and sequeling it to death, I got sick of it.
I'm pretty sure Ehren Kruger and Hideo Nakata were the ones who killed the RINGU franchise with THE RING TWO, since you know, Verbinki's film was very popular.
I love Mark but small comments like that just shows how biased he truly is.
the only thing I'll disagree with Mark on is Bloom's performance in The Kingdom of Heaven (the director's cut). Bloom's character was a thinker and a quiet one. Don't bash that movie and today, I consider it Bloom's best performance alongside Black Hawk Down.
well i agree that Pirates 2 & 3 were horrible... but if it wasn't for Depp's performance, I would've walked out of the theater, it wasn't "amazing" but it made the movie bearable. Orloondo Bland is the best description of for mr Bloom,
infact the best acting Orlando Bloom has done, was when he portrayed himself in Extras, any way...
The only reason I enjoyed Pirates, was the reference to the ride I loved as a kid and it was fun to watch Johnny play around.
Seriously, love Mark Kermode, but on a completely different wavelength here. I love all three Pirates films, especially the second, with the stories being the main reason. I actually adore multi-narrative stories, especially when narratives collide (three-way swordfight at the end is, I think, brilliant.) The one thing both Pirates and Mark Kermode have in common is that they're both a hoot!
Um sorry but Kermode is English, the idea of a Kieth Richards impersonation being similar to a pirate must come off as positively irritating to him.
The Academy didn't pay much attention to him until he was a major Hollywood star, did they? They're all about hype, if you think they have any merit you're kidding yourself.
@TulseLuper A bit late to say, but he's referencing "Island of Dr Moreau" where Brando literally spends a scene with an ice bucket on his head for no apparent reason.
i liked pirates one, hated pirates two

I loved the first movie. By the halfway mark of this one, I wanted to strangle Depp.

Also, agree 100% with Depp's performance.
