The next quake will hit New York City and wipe the entire population out. No one will be left. Sorry to sound so pessimistic but it is true. Atlanta Georgia is also on the doomed list. Be so warned.....
you know whenever disaster strikes people help others and look after others. But why do people ignore those in everyday who can use help, like finding jobs, homes, food? People only seem to care when major bad things happen but not everyday. Sad world we live in.
@queerfish1 America has a tradition of tough individualism, an everyman for himself cowboy mentality. Efforts to change that, to make society a more caring one, are branded "socialism" and "liberalism" and resisted. Look at the rough ride of universal health care in 2010, available in all other Western nations! The US has achieved little of what's termed "social progress" - a dirty term in America - with an widening disparity between the relatively rich and the comparitively poor.
@ontcan1 Well said. Unfortunately, the poor have been suckered (by the very rich) into always voting against their own interests. It would be funny if it weren't so tragic.
@ontcan1 Well said! You hit the nail on the head!! By the way, I lived in Japan for 15 years. I had national health care there and you know what? It worked! Took care of all my aches and pains, including knee surgery, and I never had to wait on line. Best of all, I wasn't bankrupted in the process. So many lies are spread here (in USA) about "SOCIALIZED" medicine, most of them generated by the far right and clowns like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. They don't have a clue.
My grandma told me her dad scooped her up took her out side and dropped her in her mother's arm and ran back into the rockin house because he forgot his hat...
The most amazing parts are first that some buildings actually withstood the quake. And watch the horses pulling wagons obediently down streets now made unfamiliar. Amazing !
The official death toll was about 3,000 but historians think it was as high as 30,000. The mayor of San Francisco at the time was a bit unscrupulous and he may have under-reported the actual death toll to for fear that companies outside the city might stop doing business in San Francisco if they knew how bad things were.
My great grandmother was a little girl when she lived through this horrible event. She lived in a tent city very much like the one at 1:49 (could even be the same one?) in Golden Gate Park for weeks after the earthquake. Having gone through the 1989 Loma Prieta event, I can completely sympathize with our ancestors in 1906.
Can happen again soon

There were no major bridges in SF in 1906. The Oakland Bay Bridge partially collapsed in 1989.
