  • one thing I am confused is that in the beginning the father is a farmer but afterwards he is a king?

I am not criticising this song. I love loreena, and have all of her CDs :)

  • @PrincessSearrah i had a similar thought and came to the conclusion that the family married into royalty with the Willie fellow. i like that interpretation in that it is all the more desirable to the sisters being the object of his love

  • @mwirt Oh! That makes sense! Thank you! :)

  • " ... with a mecka-lecka-hi-mecka-hiney-ho!"

  • may be her father is the king of farmers.

  • It's pretty cool how Loreena is Canadian, or rather has lived there since 1981, yet appears to still have a bit of an Irish accent (her parents were Scottish and Irish). Anyway, VERY cool song! Always liked it! :)

  • I like the live version of this song. Loreena McKennitt is fantastic though. Does not matter what she does.

  • my favourite song ever.. thank you for the lovely video!

  • Great song but what kind of weirdo makes a harp out of a dead person?

  • @arizonacrazyfun They probably thought it qwas a swan. peasants werenm;t smart.

  • oh, what jealousy can DO!

  • Very beautifull! Thanks!

  • Greetings from Greece..!! we love Loreena!

  • Another great song of Loreena.

  • wow what a great lyric and music! Never heard anything like this!

  • incredible voice& extraordinary rhythm and music!!!

  • Original is "Two Sisters" by Clannad.

  • @MKallagen not really. it is just another version in folk ballad "the twa sister" also known as "the cruel sister", yet this one is most orriginal (with the electric guitar) and in my opinion the most beautiful.

  • I hope they hang her sister...

I adore the song and story it tells!

  • Wonderful song... creepy lyrics!!!!

  • I love the singer and the song but I found the video irritating.

  • Very similar to the song The Wind and Rain.

  • must see her live before I die, no words can describe this divine voice.......

  • 8 people are either deaf and jealous or blind and bad at using a computer mouse.

  • This is one of my favorite Loreena McKennitt songs.

  • awesome song and singer.... one of the most beautiful songs i ve ever heard.....greetings from Romania!!!!!!

  • I loooooove this song, and I LOVE Loreena McKennitt! <3 <3 <3

  • 8 people need to think again. Wonderful music, cheers for posting.

  • This is just a beautiful song. My first time of hearing and I love it. Special also because we have a pair of nesting swans who visit our local lake every year and bring up their cygnets right in front of our hours. So protective, of each other and of the babies. It's wonderful, but then nature tends to be ;)

  • what a beautiful video thanks for posting it )O(

  • This is in Wikipedia:

"Canadian singer and harpist Loreena McKennitt's song "The Bonny Swans" is a pastiche of several traditional variants of the ballad".

There are several versions of the story and Loreena has made a mix of them into the song.

  • @SierraUnderTheSun Yes, you are right! I at first wondered why they didn't list her middle sister when going over the family members (as well as the farmer being their dad), but it seems this was the court where William her love was along with his father (who was to be her father in law, and mum and brother in law are) Anne is also there as she is now his wife...:(

  • Love this song, but it does confuse me. In the start their father is a farmer, but at the end of the song he is a King in a big hall?

I love the pictures that go with the song on this video

  • at first i have not understand the story but after hearing it twice i understand it and now it is one of my favourite songs

  • Wonderful song... :) But very sad lyrics as well!

  • Simply Beautiful

  • Love the pictures at the end

  • :( :( <3loreena mckennitt<3

  • it does´nt means farmer - it means father a the beginning

  • The best video I met for this beatiful song/ And full version of text finally. No cutten clips.

    Thnxx

  • it is very nice song

  • Comment removed

  • "...and by him, William sweet and true...", breaks my heart

  • The text make me crying :'( But I love this song!

  • I never heard such a beautiful song . So lively and a bit playful but speaks about a tragedy . I recently discovered Loreena McKennitt and I falen in love with her songs.

They sound from another planet , or from different times in history. What a talented singer.

  • OMG!!!!! this song is a master piece!!!!!!! great video, it flows with the music ;-)

  • Ok, something I don't get: first, the song says the daughters' father is a farmer. Then at the end, when the harp plays in the court, she says, "There does sit my father the king". Um, wha??

  • @whitespirit26 You've found just one of disparities. And the easiest one. If daughter loved her father why couldn't she call him "the King".

Just look for another: farmer had 3 daughetrs. In the end we see two suns and two daughters (one sunk). - But it doesn't matter as same more strange places in text.

  • As a third opinion, it IS that the eldest pushed the youngest into the river, not the other way around. Traditionally, the youngest sister or brother was the main character in the faerie tale, and the one to be put under enchantment or killed.

  • The part with false sister anne reminds me of the faerie Path by freewin Jones. Wunderfull book!

  • There was always a reason why, I loved Loreena McKennitt. Her music gave me a lot of visions in m head. when I listen to them. An other reason why I love Celtic music also. She ended up letting my heart open and love Celtic Music

  • The younget pushed the eldest in...you have it oppoiste on your lyrics

  • @DragonofShu actually the eldest pushed the youngest swan in.

  • You see my point exactly. People liek you my friend think it i smore logical for the eldest to do it and don't hear what the song says. Hear it once again at full volume and maybe you will hear. I heard five timess row jiust now and it says the youngets pushed the eldest in not the opposite

  • @DragonofShu And people like you don't understand that certain people actually have the words to the song and the fact that Loreena is English so she has an accent. Also like is spelled L I K E not liek, is doesn't have a space in it,times has one s just doesn't have an I in it youngest is spelled Y O U N G E S T. So perhaps it is your ears and eyes that are the issue. I happen to have not one but two different C.D's with this song on it.

  • so is it the way I write now you know it ahs nothing to do with hearing just telling.

  • Also I do not care about hwat the singer really wanted to say. what i care about is what is heard. So even if the lyrics are that and the even if the singer ssaid the waht you say she is not prounouncing it right at the very least

  • @nursefuzzywuzzy Loreena is from Stratford, Ontario, Canada. (Same as Justin Bieber) She is Canadian not English.

  • @Tuskerman irony huh?

  • @Tuskerman That's really interesting because I've heard her talk...and she sounded like she was definitely from the UK. I had no idea she was Canadian!

  • @DragonofShu I've been listening to this song for years. It's definitely the eldest pushing the youngest in.

  • I think Iw as quite clear I won'targue about ti anymore. Whatever it is it matters not. Yous eei accept the fact tha tshe mgihthas just a weird accent annd ti soudns liek that to me. I still believe that I'm right but no reason to argue.

  • Oh and plz don't reply aggressively just hear the song. I fyous till disagree there is just no hope for conversation

  • Excellent work!! Congratulations!! Amazing video!!

  • The first song I have ever heard from Loreena!Iwas 15 years old ,and my sence for music has totally changed after hearing this beautifull part! For ever!...

  • beautiful song, sad but beautiful. Like a lot of her songs. 'The swans swim so bonny o!'

  • GORGEOUS video!!

  • beautifully potrayed, but all in all a very sad song. reminds me of Valiant by Holly Black .

  • @princessmungalsingh I love that book!!!! :D

  • Dose anyone notice that she says in the begininning " A farmer there lived in the north country... And he had daughters one two three" then at the end, when talking as the youngest daughter, she call the king her father "And there does sit my father the King". Anyone wanna explain this.

  • @top1terra1girl In the country of england, wales, scotland and ireland (and other celtic countries often the king was merely a more wealthy farmer than others in the area. He was king by virtue of the fact that he was an able leader, manager and also by being a member of a particular family/clan.

  • Such a sad story is written in this music..... and told with such a haunting voice....

  • I can't thank you enough for creating this very beautiful video. You must have gone to a great deal of time and trouble to find all these pictures that illustrate the song so perfectly and exquisitely. And having the lyrics too! What a lovely gift! Many thanks, and wishing you many bright blessings.

  • this was one of my mama's favorite songs by loreena mckennitt

  • love it

  • I think she was already married to the royal family...how else could a poor farmer's daughter offer house and land to her sister?

  • @republichik Because it's a song, like make believe, like not real

How creative of Loreena, the girls got talent.

  • In the lyric he is the farmer and not pointed out that he is a poor farmer..may be you are right..?but if she is married how her husband left her alone with out security?but at first she is the daughter of a farmer and at last she is assuming that her father and mothers-in-law are her father and mother.but the tune and the singer who sang is extraordinary.

  • The beginning of this song is my absolute favorite. I love how the guitar and the violin seem to call back and forth to each other. It's rather like swans calling to each other.

    Great song and great video!

  • Thank you for all the energy and part of your spirit that you put into creating this with all the lovely art! Linda

  • this is gr8 i love Loreena McKennitt she is so amazing

  • While I WOULD say that the women are beautiful and you can see their nipples, that's not the point of this post. Loreena McKennitt is a goddess among singers. Shes the greatest bard to have lived IMHO. Im glad she does what she does, she provides solace and peace when you listen to her voice. The song is sad and almost makes you want to cry. I cannot rate high enough 1000000 thumbs up!

  • Great song - great pictures! Good work. :)

  • Beautiful job with this. Perfect pictures for a great song.

  • ive been listening to her songs for years... and then i heard her talking voice and im like whoa her voice is so light and fluffy!!!! i love this song!!!

  • We worked at school with that song..

    It was really great !

The lyric's so loveable but kinda sad..

A sister who killed her younger sis to get her "true love".. And her family, who was poor became royal...while her soul live within the harp... =( poor bonny swan..

  • Did anyone else notice that in the beginning, the daughter who dies' father is a Farmer, but at the end her parents are the King and Queen?

I LOVE the song - have for years! Thanks for posting!

  • Yup.. I think its something about the girl having married so the King and Queen are her inlaws...

  • the pictures are really beautiful and wellmatched :) And the song is really good. Great work.

  • Loreena McKennitt is the Goddess of Music. You'll never find a more Beautiful Voice in any realm. She is the Greatest Living Bard, Her storytelling is unmatched. She is the Most Beautiful Lady.

Bonny Swans is but one of Her many Beautiful Works of Musical Magic - Magic She works upon the ears of all who hear Her.

  • I agree. Every song she touches turns to gold.

  • @MrMickey2000 I coudn't have said it better myself. She is quite honestly has the most hauntingtly beautiful voice on the planet. God gave her a rare talent.

  • @MrMickey2000 She is topnotch but not the absolute best to me. She's tied with Origa in my mind.

  • @MrMickey2000 sounds like someone has a crush!

  • You put together a great video. Way to go!

  • 5:35 is an awesome pic.

wow i really like this song... it ALOT like oh the dreadful wind and rain... but it's got more story to it... I like it ^-^ I'ma save it in my favs

  • favourited and five stars.......stunning..

  • @Otulissa3 one sister kills the other to get one the other ones love. The one that dies is found and brought back to life as a harp, from the bones of her body, thats why the harp starts to play alone, aftewardsr she is a gift at the wedding of her sister who killed her, and the man she was supposed to marry, no one knowing she is now a harp. So she starts telling bout her family, and what she is seeing and feeling on what would have been her wedding day. Just my opinion

  • i love the song it's just soo sad tho...

  • @TrueWitchyOne I think this is based on The Twa Sisters ( an old murder ballad) So you'd be entirely correct :B

  • Es verdaderamente bello, no sólo el video sino la historia que es la cuestión de fondo

  • It sounds like the youngest daughter was to marry a prince and the eldest was jealous so she pushed her in. The youngest says save me and I'll give you house and land. (maybe because as a woman married to a princes she will be able to) but the eldest doesn't want that, she won't save her unless she has the prince for herself. I don't get the end why she calls the king father. I would guess she means inlaws????

  • @Otulissa3

I think she calls him her father, because she was to marry his son (And there does sit my false sister Anne, who did drown me for the sake of a man). So she's saying that he's rightfully her father, not her sisters. Does that make sense?

  • Her music is just so soothing

  • I always interpreted it as she was a farmer's daughter who married into a royal family - hence the older sister's jealousy. William "sweet and true" was a prince and the king and queen and brother Hugh were her in-laws.

Just an absolutely beautiful song. ^.^

  • But isn't it weird... At the beginning the text says "A farmer lived in the north country... he had daughters one, two, three" and in the end, when the youngest daughter speaks she says "There doth sit my father the king... and my mother the queen" So... is she now a farmer's daughter or a king's daughter?

  • @Lunitari1

She's saying that as though they were her in-laws, which they should have been.

  • Thank you. Most excellent.

  • thanks so much for the lyrics + the video ! I could at last understand this great song

  • the actual story it's based on is even older, 12 or 13th Century. Swans represented death- they were thought to house the souls of those who had drowned. Also, society was not so stratified, a King could take any woman and make her part of his court, his family, without fear of reprisal. In fact the Famer would have considered it an honor. The other ladies in court would become her "sisters" and "cousines". It was a way of creating a harem without running foul of the Church.

  • beautiful interpretation of one of my favorite Loreena piece, thank you!

  • What a terrible ending! Golly! Never watch these vidoes when PMS kicks in-- I can't for the life of me stop crying! And its such a beautiful song! T.T

  • There are many versions of the song "Bonny Swans.". Pick one that pleases you.

In most of the Norwegian and some of the Swedish variants, the story ends by the instrument being broken and the younger sister coming alive again. In a few, she was not actually drowned, but saved and nursed back to health; she tells the story herself

  • Excelente cancion.

  • gorgeous! love it

  • beautiful!!!

  • her best remembered

  • sweet Loreena <3

  • danke für diese schööööne musik

    grezzi aus

    Mecklenburg Vorpommern ( Müritz)

ps: liebe grüße nach schweden an heiko dagmar und pennsen smile

  • All loreena is enchanting, another one to add to favorites :)

  • The original story was a Scottish murder ballad called Binnorie.

  • not exactly. "Binnorie" ist just one version of this story like many has been written, p.e. "Minnoire", "The cruel Sister" etc.

The original story is called "The Twa Sisters" ("The Miller and tzhe King's Daughter")and has been written in 1656

  • super

  • i luv loreena mckennitt her songs r so peaceful even tho i luv rock

  • thank u so much 4 uploading this

    5 and fave

  • Sweet

''And there sits my false sister Anne , who drowned me for the sake of a man''

I would love to see ''Anne'' 's face then !

But that's the saddest part of the song =[

  • Agreed it's my favourite bit

  • I would have liked to see the look on the harpers face when the harp starts playing and singing on it's own.

  • Personally, I'd love to see the expression on Anne (the sister)'s face. A better example of an "Oh $%&@" face you will rarely see.

  • Old fairy tales and the like suggest that a harp like the one in the song, i.e. one made from a drowned woman, would either sing by itself or somehow tell its tale to the harper holding it. Thats why that harper mad her into an insturment; so that her tale could be sung.

  • @ishvareya I agree it;s my favorite part...I have loved this song since I was 7....14 years now.

  • my fav part is...

'...and there does sit my false sister anne...' <3

  • mine too <3

i also love "and there sits william sweet and true"

  • This is a lovely version of this Child ballad. Custer LaRue performs a beautiful version of a variant called "Binnorie".

I love Loreena McKennitt, but had not heard this song before. Your video was very nicely done!

    Thank you.

  • Absolutely beautiful addition of pictures and lyrics. I never realized the story behind this song. Thank you for making this.

  • fav singer, fav song , lovely video.

  • I don't like an music remotely like this, by I do adore Loreena McKennitt's music. In this song, I love the call and response wit the guitar...

  • I love your music, it is one of my moms favorite and mine too. My favorite song is The Mummers Dance.

    Karley H. 9 years old

  • It's a very nice song xD And yeah the Mummers Dance is great

  • Mummers dance seems just a teeny bit whiny to me... just how the pitch is so high and theres that funny buzzy instument in the background...

  • oh the lady can sing have loved all her misic for years

  • this is my favorite song for de CD!!! y love it...

  • Super, pero emm sabes la letra no va de acuerdo a la piesa, sabes debes de poner al misno tiempo para poder leerlo te recomiendo p onerlo de un color diferente o tal vez el tamaño de la letra, Saludos

  • I have most of Loreena's albums and I think this is the only song where she used a rock guitar. I don't know how she got the idea to do that but it works brilliantly. This is a great video too, very well done.

  • Thank you and I love this song cause yeah it does have a different feel

  • Nice cover

  • This aint no cover this is original =) =)

  • Good song I heard because of an art teacher I had in 8th grade. Was wondering if anyone actually put it on youtube, seems so lol

  • Love this song so put it up xD

  • It is an old Grimms fairy tale. She was a farmers daugter who was to marry a king. So I guess she was both!

  • does anybody know if there is an instrumental version of this song? I would really like to have that one... thanx

  • not as far as i know but that would be great

  • Beautiful pictures...

But Loreena's lyrics confuse me - was she a farmer's daughter or a king's daughter? And what happened to the middle daughter? lol

  • I guess it is quite confusing I had to go over it again. I'll have to look at the notes again

  • There was a ret-con partway through the song - she's a farmer's daughter at the start and a king's at the end. It's the only thing I dislike about this song!!

  • I mean to say there is a ret-con in the actual song lyrics - you got them exactly right.

  • Yeah it's a little confusing lol thanks

  • Perhaps she's a farmers daughter who's to marry a king's son. Then she would be a daughter to the king.

  • Great song, amazing pictures, wonderul artist!
