I reside in Thailand, and didn't know about this market. It's nuts. It's a glowing proof of overpopulation. What's next, markets on airport runways? It places Thailand firmly as a 3rd world country. Are the vendors' kids running around there also? Notice, the 2nd train doesn't even slow down - which is the same for cars & motorbikes which go whizzing through each and every outdoor market in Thailand.

There are a lot of possible explanations of why they'd do this:

1. The other markets are already extremely crowded so no additional stands fit in

2. It's pretty smart to setup around the tracks cause it ensures a path for the shoppers walk through.

3. Judging by the stands, they seem to be in the slums where it is usually extremely crowded so point 2 is a BIG plus.

4. It isn't as dangerous as you think since the train goes very slowly through that area honking beforehand to warn them.

I don't really understand why they do this. They could had:

- moved the market somewhere else

- rebuilt the line into a tunnel or viaduct running under/over the market, or

- reroute the train line.

Basically, any other arrangement I can think of is better than this.
