What the kids did was illegal. Drivers must yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a “walk” signal. Pedestrians yield to drivers when "crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk. By law the drivers do not have to yield to pedestrians that far away from an actual crosswalk. It doesn't matter if there nobody there. It is against the law to jaywalk when there is clearly a cross walk 200 feet away that could be used. LOL
