arthur miller was actually alluding to the Red Scare when everyone was being accused of being a Communist; he wrote this because he was comparing the Communist Scare and the Salem Witchcraft Trials; they were even charging Hollywood as being communist headquarters. So yes, in a way it is "funny", but it is quite satirical because Arthur Miller uses the absurdism of the witchcraft trials to represent how absurd the communist accusations were....this has nothing whatsoever to do with Shakespeare.
