In the movie clip he had special spats that he could lean 45°,then he first performed it live and he fell(he got further then the spats can hold) so he decided to make special shoes with: A special cutout,and pegs in the stage. When the "bomber" is distracting you,michael and his dancers are finding the pegs to stand on them and lean.

Since they couldn't use the cables to support themselves during the live performances (like they did in the video). The shoes allowed himself and the dancers to hook into pegs that came out of the floor during the song. Yea and the stopping point is the gravity point. You can't physically lean more than 25-35 degrees, you go over the gravity line/point and can't lean anymore. It's just impossible to lean over the gravity point, that's where skill and power has nothing to do with it.

You guys are both right and wrong. In the Smooth Criminal video he used long invincible robes and strings that held them up. When the crowd wanted to see it live he came up with the magnet idea cause the robes couldn't be used on stage. But the magnets weren't always strong enough so therefore he came up with the nail-shoe which is what he used later on. So you're both right.

In the video for the song he used cables, but on stage he had shoes with little slots in the heal which would slot into the floor on stage and allow him to lean...however, he had to be very talented to do this as one wrong move, one little imbalance meant he would brake his ankle...

I know - when I did some research I figured out that, in this video (Smooth Criminal) they used long robes and strings that cannot be seen. Later his fans wanted to see the trick live and he decided to try it. He started by using small clicking mechanics but as you see in one of the videos, one of the dancing guys gets stuck to the floor for a second, so later on he decided to do it with nails as you said.
