We used to shop at this mall during our vacations (from NB) in the 1980's. The last time I was in this mall was August 1988 - I still have a comic book and a sales receipt I got that day. If I remember correctly, at that time there was a Zellers on the right and an IGA (short-lived grocery chain) on the left.
I didn't even know this place had closed... it's sad to see yet another nice old mall buried by Walmart.
@packrat79 I'm surprised that this video has reached such a wide audience! We are from the area and went to the mall when we were kids. The area with the dept store actually was a Met-Mart which went out of business and the grocery store was a Save Easy which was bought out by Loblaws and closed when the Superstore opened. The mall closed in the late 90's (maybe 1998?) way before the Walmart or any other development started on the edge of town.
I don't know if you're old enough to remember, but I'm certain that, as of Aug. '88, there was an IGA and Zellers there. I passed through Bridgewater only three more times, the last in 1999, but was never to either mall again. Hey, is that old boarded-up hospital still there?
@packrat79 You are thinking about the wrong complex. The Bridgewater Plaza had a Zellers and an IGA in the 80's but it wasn't a mall. Later the Zellers moved to the Bridgewater Mall along the river and the old store became a K-mart. It's now a Giant Tiger and a Sears store. The IGA was there for a long time, was turned into a Save Easy and is now a No Frills store. The old hospital was gutted out and turned into a call center and office space.
@packrat79 The mall has recently been torn down to the steel frame and a Lawtons Drug store has been build into the base of the hill below the old mall. I hope to shoot a new video of the area the next time I'm down that way.
@packrat79 It was not an IGA but a Save Easy, my dad used to work there until the Superstore was built. This mall closed down long before the Wal Mart came there. I remember Zellers built onto the now current mall and that's when it went downhill. Blame Zellers.
But srsly, another great place NEAR Bridgewater if you guys wanna check it out is the abandoned Satellite Station near Mill Village. Not much to look act, but the long corridors, well area, ad satellite are fun to get on top of. The ladders my friend and I left are probably still laying around too.
Unless you're into Cattle Pulling Cinder Blocks, Trucks Pulling Cinder Blocks, Trucks Pulling Cattle, or an ancient, obese, drunk population, stay out of this armpit, of the armpit, of the armpit of Canada.
@incognito84 Couldn't have described it better myself.... Everyone is so behind the times there.... And when something like a Wal-Mart comes around they all think they are the gods of the revolutionary world..... They just got a Bulk Barn and they think its the coolest thing in the world. People need to learn to escape that place ASAP... It's like being stuck in 97' or some shit.
All right, well. I have to say, this is the best video I've ever seen of the Met Mart. Actually probably the only one. And the graffiti that was mentioned at 2:30 was done by me. I used to write solo, and A.I.V. It's not that good, but i was young then. But I am like the happiest boy in the world now because i seen my graff on Youtube. haha, All I can say is that I wish you would have been there one of the many times I've been there. :)
The graffiti was pretty bad but its all good. I'm glad you were able to find this video! It seems that as time goes on a lot of people from Bridgewater have gone for a walk in the old mall.
Haha well, I was only 14 when I did that.. I'm not too proud, but it's better than writing profanity and everything. But I love that place. Always have. :D
I remember going into that mall a few years back. I used to live in the trailer park behind it. what a shit hole. its just gotten progressively worse. I live in saskatchewan now, and am amazed that the town never did anything with that mall. they should demolish it.
im from bridgewater and this was cool to see and shit (cause ive never been in there) but you guys should go into the old canadian tire, that shits scary as fuck! there is people living in it too!
yeah :P its awesome, if you go inside there through the doors in the back or however i got in (i think i got in threw a window, but i dont have good memory) and theres a ladder that goes right on to the roof, its pretty sweet.
Eureka northern California Humboldt county , Bayshore Mall has seen every thing gone sence 2003, every year another store is gone. redwood curtain county, 122 thounsand people with no jobs. & down town has many emty stores. is really sad because our county cant make enough compared to the rest of the country, Gap & Old navy both are gone. the 2 best ones we had. I was hoping for a Abercrombie & fitch or Hollister to come but with bad economy that no for sure, 50 more stores gone

My mistake, heck I was only 9 years old at the time and I guess my memory has faded over the last 23 years. Nice to know the Plaza is still there....

@packrat79 Stores haven't changed all that much around the town. Mostly just moved locations.

yet, another, of many already, and many more to come. Throw it on the pile of abandoned concrete previously used for retail.
Everyone shops online now. These kind of places were energy hogs and a hidious eye sore on the landscape.
Thanks for sharing. good job.

LOL This is the high point of Bridgewater.

I agree completely! Everytime I go back to Bridgewater to visit my parents I feel like I'm "unlearning" everything I learned outside Bridgewater...
