Rev.Wright statement was a very ignorant one. The color of a person's skin does not determine the way they are taught to learn or their thinking patterns when it comes to learning. I'm black and dominican myself so I guess .. from his statement I guess I learn from both sides of my brain. Just a mess! Now studies do show that a left handed "person" of any race think with the right side of there brain &a right handed person uses the left side of there brain. has nothing to do with race or color.
what's sad is that the crux of what he's saying - that educational system fails a lot of kids - is right. the system is set up to teach one way and lots of children of all races learn differently.

I felt the exact same upon listening to Wright's statements. It IS absolutely absurd. What I think he was trying to do was to come up with an explanation as to why African- Americans are trailing behind Caucasions in America in the area of education. Seems like he was combating the idea of intelectual inferiority the wrong way - he was tring to blame it on the education system when he should have been talking socio-economics.

I'm probably only one ancestor away from being 100% black. I went to integrated schools my whole life...never been to a majority-black school. It's safe to say that from pre-K through my master's I was taught via the so-called "European" method. How about I graduated in the TOP TEN PERCENT of my high school class? How about I graduated college WITH HONORS? Oh...and most of my awards were for MATH AND...I'm a woman!

Rev. Wright is totally wrong. To basically clarify it all, we all have the same potential to learn the same way. As we get older and test the waters as far as school, we develop patterns and a preferred way of learning. There are five categories of learning. I can only think of three right now which are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Its all about the way you prefer to learn and the environment in which you have been learning. It is not based off of genetics.
Yeah I was quite shocked to hear this too. I have done various studies of the sort with my students (back in the day of course) and I mean, its varied.
No scietific study of merit has ever decreed or cataloged a repetitive result of African or European brain functions.
It has always been diverse. For example Musicians and Artists of white and color are more than likely right brained, but scientists and mathematicians are left brained. Its not about skin or ethnicity. Its the luck of the draw.

I can not say that I agree with the specific argument that the Reverend was making however the same study is made about males and females and I think in a general statistic, it is correct. Males and females, in general, learn and comprehend differently. I believe there is educational racism, but nothing biological.
I think its another racist way of saying (from a black person at that) that balck children and white children are different. I dont think it matters what race you are...what determines wether youre right brained or left brained depends on youre genetic make up. Well...I can truly say that I can prove Rev. Wright wrong. I am an African-American male who graduated from high school ranked 20th out of 170 students. I took AP courses and faired quite well in them. Now Im in college and finished this first semester with a 4.0 GPA. Both of these settings there are not only black students, but white, asian, hispanic, etc. I am very analytical and I am creative. Rev. Wright has to be careful because this could also lead to "seperate but equal" schools system.
Everyone's born with a prefered learning style which all has to do with genetics, it all depends on who you're parents and ancestors are as to whose gene's you have and which style you end up with. I'm white and I'm right brained, always have been always will be. Reverand Write is very wrong, it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with genetics.

Obama is not your average African-American (i.e. his ancestors were not slaves or descendants of slaves & he was not raised with traditions or experiences common to African Americans). So I think Rev. Wright's church (& Michelle) have been his main connections to the African American experience & he's a better man for it.
i think Rev. Wright was talking about culture. He has 1 of the most African-centered churches I've seen. They celebrate God AND their African Race/Culture. At least 50% of the times I've seen them over half of the church, including all choir members, were dressed in the most beautiful African attire. They celebrate our culture while some other churches are geared more towards ignoring or denying who you are. This HAS to have impacted Obama's sense of racial pride.
Im no scientist, but i dont think dif races use different sides of the brain. Its true that alot of left handed people (using a dif part of the brain) are more artistic, but to speak for awhole race like that isnt correct. everyone is different.

i believe that the tendency to use the right or left side of the brain is determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. But it these tendencies have nothing to do with race. I'm black and I'm left handed, therefore i use the right side of my brain but the only other left-handed person in my entire family is my uncle. It just proves my point.
African children learn better using a right brain Curriculum. However I don't think this is genetics, I think it is cultural. In the black community, our children are encouraged to participate in sports, music, entertainment, and other activities that sharpens the right side of the brain. Reading and critical thinking is not something that is stressed in our community, I think that we need a balance left/right brain curriculum in our schools.

I don't know for a fact if these statements are true are not but I would assume some kind of study was done and a generalization/blanket statement was made...which to me is never fair because there are always excepions. but it's like the statement that men have larger brains then women, but women use a larger ercentage of their brains.

However, if you look at the tribes of Africa and their learning styles you will find they are exactly the way Wright said they were. You have a valid point. The thing with research is that w/ it you can prove whatever you want. It's objective. However, Rev. Wright is wrong(pun intended) for saying what he did. We're humans w/ brains first. Ethnicity and Skin tone come way afterwards. It is definitely a nurture thing.
I think the ability of all children to learn is based on what goes on at school and primarily the parental support at home. A dyslexic child of any race can learn to overcome it with enough parental support and school support. An autistic child of any race can overcome and make strides based on support of that child. Race is nothing but a divine intervention. People of all races can excel with enough pushing and self-determination and the brain functions are not based on race.
no it is not true. it depends on upbringing, and where you are born, and your culture. i am west indian, and they not only teach us to be analytical, but they also make us tap into our creative side. that rev is just old and set in his mentality. if what he says holds water, then it would only be because of some unseen power controlling what each ethnicity learns. but i doubt it. it's all about upbringing and interest.

As a homeschooling mommy, I have done a lot of research about learning styles to try to find what works best. Children do have different learning styles (some are kinetic, auditory, visual, etc) but it has nothing to do with race! I think that is a ridiculous comment! I think public schools are single sided in their learning styles and it makes a lot of kids (black, white, etc.) fall through the cracks. I love the fact that African Americans are the fastest growing section of homeschoolers!...

Honestly, I think Wright was making excuses for our people, something that we definitely don't need more of. It discourages the analytical, areas where IMO we fall short like math and science and technical fields simply because *we were not taught to think that way*, not because of our race, but because of what was emphasized and encouraged *to us* while growing up. What I think he was trying to do was to come up with an explanation as to why African- Americans are trailing behind Caucasions in America in the area of education. I'm probably only one ancestor away from being 100% black. I went to integrated schools my whole life...never been to a majority-black school. It's safe to say that from pre-K through my master's I was taught via the so-called "European" method. How about I graduated in the TOP TEN PERCENT of my high school class? How about I graduated college WITH HONORS? Oh...and most of my awards were for MATH AND...I'm a woman!

Rev. Wright is totally wrong. To basically clarify it all, we all have the same potential to learn the same way. As we get older and test the waters as far as school, we develop patterns and a preferred way of learning. There are five categories of learning. I can only think of three right now which are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Its all about the way you prefer to learn and the environment in which you have been learning. It is not based off of genetics.

Yeah I was quite shocked to hear this too. I have done various studies of the sort with my students (back in the day of course) and I mean, its varied.
No scietific study of merit has ever decreed or cataloged a repetitive result of African or European brain functions.
It has always been diverse. For example Musicians and Artists of white and color are more than likely right brained, but scientists and mathematicians are left brained. Its not about skin or ethnicity. Its the luck of the draw.

I can not say that I agree with the specific argument that the Reverend was making however the same study is made about males and females and I think in a general statistic, it is correct. Males and females, in general, learn and comprehend differently. I believe there is educational racism, but nothing biological.

Well...I can truly say that I can prove Rev. Wright wrong. I am an African-American male who graduated from high school ranked 20th out of 170 students. I took AP courses and faired quite well in them. Now Im in college and finished this first semester with a 4.0 GPA. Both of these settings there are not only black students, but white, asian, hispanic, etc. I am very analytical and I am creative. Rev. Wright has to be careful because this could also lead to "seperate but equal" schools system.

I understand what you're saying, but children pick up spiritual cues from the mother even in the womb & our spirits are nurtured by our mother's cultural experiences.
Obama is not your average African-American (i.e. his ancestors were not slaves or descendants of slaves & he was not raised with traditions or experiences common to African Americans). So I think Rev. Wright's church (& Michelle) have been his main connections to the African American experience & he's a better man for it.

i think Rev. Wright was talking about culture. He has 1 of the most African-centered churches I've seen. They celebrate God AND their African Race/Culture. At least 50% of the times I've seen them over half of the church, including all choir members, were dressed in the most beautiful African attire. They celebrate our culture while some other churches are geared more towards ignoring or denying who you are. This HAS to have impacted Obama's sense of racial pride.

i believe that the tendency to use the right or left side of the brain is determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. But it these tendencies have nothing to do with race. The truth is research shows that
African children learn better using a right brain Curriculum. However I don't think this is genetics, I think it is cultural. In the black community, our children are encouraged to participate in sports, music, entertainment, and other activities that sharpens the right side of the brain. Reading and critical thinking is not something that is stressed in our community, I think that we need a balance left/right brain curriculum in our schools.

American learning is the same way. If black children learn from a different style due to cultural and genetic understandings then we must acknowledge that and use it to their benefit. Wright pointed out and rightly so that different doesn't mean deficient. By the way are you aware the Chinese learn similarly to the African and their schools are a combination of both. yeah this is a shame. Honestly I personally feel white people do better in school on average than black people simply because more white kids grow up with two parents. Other than that we're all equal. I have several African Americans friends that are alot smarter then I am, but some of the African Americans I run into make me want to apply for a job at NASA. Honestly I think socialism is really the big factor. Either way I'm glad Obama got rid of him.

You have a valid point. The thing with research is that w/ it you can prove whatever you want. It's objective. However, Rev. Wright is wrong(pun intended) for saying what he did. We're humans w/ brains first. Ethnicity and Skin tone come way afterwards. It is definitely a nurture thing.

I think the ability of all children to learn is based on what goes on at school and primarily the parental support at home. A dyslexic child of any race can learn to overcome it with enough parental support and school support. An autistic child of any race can overcome and make strides based on support of that child. Race is nothing but a divine intervention. People of all races can excel with enough pushing and self-determination and the brain functions are not based on race.

no it is not true. it depends on upbringing, and where you are born, and your culture. i am west indian, and they not only teach us to be analytical, but they also make us tap into our creative side. that rev is just old and set in his mentality. if what he says holds water, then it would only be because of some unseen power controlling what each ethnicity learns. but i doubt it. it's all about upbringing and interest.

As a homeschooling mommy, I have done a lot of research about learning styles to try to find what works best. Children do have different learning styles (some are kinetic, auditory, visual, etc) but it has nothing to do with race! I think that is a ridiculous comment! I think public schools are single sided in their learning styles and it makes a lot of kids (black, white, etc.) fall through the cracks. I love the fact that African Americans are the fastest growing section of homeschoolers!...

Also, as some1 who has taken MANY social work and education classes, along with working with kids....I must say that all kids do NOT learn the same. That's what's wrong with the educational system; they're teaching children as if they all learn the same...That's why so many children are being "left behind." Our cognitive skills are not all the same...Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, etc...we all learn differently.

I understand what you are saying. HOWEVER,in the 1800s, educational programs were not created with minority youth in mind and to date, we are still using that system. So no matter if you use your right or left brain to learn, if you are a minority, the educational system was not made with you in mind.

wright is ignorant...i think children learn from examples we as adults dont always set the best example. i have 3 children, they all are soooo different. my 5 year old is creative ...my son is a critcal thinker. they are both black and have the same children both gifted...so now what?

Honestly, I think Wright was making excuses for our people, something that we definitely don't need more of. It discourages the analytical, areas where IMO we fall short like math and science and technical fields simply because *we were not taught to think that way*, not because of our race, but because of what was emphasized and encouraged *to us* while growing up. Thanks for addressing this topic we need more dialogue like this about what our "leaders" are saying about us.
