Paul Gilbert is a BEAST no question, but that dumbfounded look on his face says he just shared a very special moment with a very special individual and clearly he was humbled. Good for Paul for sharing his moment! This floors me every single time I hear it.
True story. My mate (I won't say who but if you're a Brit you'll know him) was rehearsing for a show at the Albert Hall recently. He got chatting to a bass player, who introduced himself as John, and asked him if he fancied lunch. In the restaurant, my mate asked "John" if he did anything else, to which he replied "I've got a band". When asked "what are they called and would I have heard of them", he said "Led Zeppelin".
This tune just goes to show, that at the core of great vocalist songs, one so often finds beautiful music supporting them. Certainly, great vocals can often enhance great music, but if you strip the vocals from most great songs, you'll find great musical compositions laying the foundations for them - compositions that hold up beautifully, even when played only instrumentally. And, one day, when all the visions and memories of the LZ hype and mythology fade, this music will remain, it'll hold up!
This is the magic that is Led Zeppelin: they could at one fork in the road be a Hammer of the gods, and yet in another turn on the same road be a softly, blooming lily in the field.
As I was listening I kept on anticipating Robert Plant's voice chiming in. Funny thing was after not hearing him I gained a new appreciation for the beauty of the music. Excuse me as I wipe my tears away.
This clearly isnt about Paul Gilbert, who graciously lays back to allow JPJ to shine. It's really amazing performance by JPJ. I didnt realize he had those amazing mando chops. Wow..double listen.
JPJ was always the star in this song. Slightly disappointing to see Paul Gilbert strumming this in an open tuning, should be finger picked in double dropped D. Still sounded nice though.
@gorby9POD why do more work than you have to. not to mention this is not a song you would want to screw up and the fact that gilbert is just keeping the chord progression doesnt mean he needs to show off because im sure he could do it.
1969, Los Angeles, California. Me, nine years old playin' outside the house in the tree in the yard. Older brother, inside the house, unwraps his latest purchase and lays the licorice pizza, 33 1/3 RPM onto the turntable. "What the hell is that?" I almost fall out of the tree and am drawn into the house between the stereo speakers and into a new age of music. THAT was Zeppelin (1st album) and JPJ was comin through. 43 years later and yet to be hit as hard by music. Magical. Mystical. Religious.
This really is moving. Gilbert is my favorite shredder...he "gets" it. Meaning, he's still an awesome shredder nowadays, but he plays a lot of slower stuff and sings now too. He realizes life ain't all about shredding.
John Paul Jones can never be underated he along with JP,RPand the Beast JB WERE the musical JUGGERNAUT called LED ZEPPELIN...Each was a pivotal driving force that made this band untouchable
the thing that made led zeppelin so much better than the rest is the fact that even they're least known member (JPJ) is one of the most musically talented people ever and arguably the greatest bassist of all time.
i still feel it was wrong for Jimmy & Robert to tour during the 90's w/o as much as giving JPJ a call as to if he wanted to tour w/them..i mean like some one said here He is possibly the most talented player of the group and he is always in the shadows of the other 3. utter nonsense how they handled the whole situation. ihelove at the Hall of fame honours as JPJ gave it to both as a remark about the two of them forgetting his phone number.. go JPJ..
@280Ztaco when it comes to zeppelin... the four of them are about as good as they can get... no use in comparing apples to oranges...4 different instruments.. one fantastic sound
Leave Page alone.. He's made his mark on music, and most of you haven't. The reason JPJ is so underrated is because he didn't seek fame and fortune from music, although he could've easily earned it. He had his time in the spotlight with Zeppelin, and what glorious time it was, on keyboards. But he'll never be the string player that is the mighty Jimmy Page. And Page will never be the haunting keyboardist or groovy bassist that is JPJ. They're both on the same plain here...
I can honestly say without John Paul Jones Led Zeppelin would not have been the same. He influenced the band, Jimmy is great but John is more talented, he play's piano, organ, mandolin, bass, guitar, and more. Really underrated it's a shame.
@801Current ...one? I would say without JPJ LZ may have been very good , but never the brilliant band they became! Jimmy Page is my everlasting hero, but I understand without JPJ I dont think they would have been so bleeding fantastic!
just wanna put it out there. anyone who dislikes this video can go @#$% themselves.. great job guys , alot of ppl think ( usually guitar plays) that it dont matter what you play or how good you are if ya dont play guitar then your not worth listening to... well for anyone who thinks that you know what you can do;) i myself play mandolin and its a bigtime unique sound but it can be sweet if played well. anyways back to my main purpose; great job dudes
@jamiemacie04 so true...what's sad is that some people, if they know who paul gilbert is, will think mr. big, then will think "to be with you" and then will pass this by (the song is good, but the "ballad" reputation didn't help mr. big in north america)...of course, if they pass this by, it's probably also because they don't have a clue that "going to california" and mr. john paul jones are important parts of led zeppelin...
@64ah I just realized I addressed you as "good person" .....sounds odd. looking back on it. But yes...mandolin is amazing. And not too hard to play really after some good practice.
JPJ is still one of the very best even after 4 decades. Young musicians take note. Make an effort and try to put something into your art. No mindless chord strumming, same note bass picking and drum machines followed by where's my check?
