Bjarne must go to bed every night thanking that drug EPO.He almost quit cycling in the late 80´s when he could´nt get a contract with a team.Fignon saved his ass by having him on as a domestique. Then he was introduced to EPO on Ariostea.Continued experiments on Gewiss and it was later perfected at Telekom. Now he is running one of the most succesful teams...That would´nt had happened if it was´nt for EPO.Bjarne was a solid rider but not a champion...EPO made him one
The tell tale give away is over the years from early 90's to present take a look at the faces of the riders...notice?...where is the pain, where is the expression on the face of effort torture mind battling with physical strain the hurting etc etc...its not there! BUT thats what we want to see right? the human body trying to overcome effort that is on the limit these dickheads ride over the line as they started, sprints or mountain tops its the same
Really @eaxnitro??? No they didn't and that's a bloody ridiculous attitude numb nuts. No true fan condones what he did (along with many others) but sport is a thing of beauty, romance and passion... if you want bare knuckle fighting go watch a dog fight
The 1996 tour must have been awesome. All the riders were on so much gear that several riders died from heart attacks. Perfect, racing right on the limit. Sweet.
@baroh2413 YES! and guess what all and sundry are talking about it and in the midst of it all there is one rider who has remained SILENT...SSSSHHH! INDURAIN!...28BPS heart rate beats everyone by MINUTES in time trials face is a picture of serenity on any climb.
I can't get offended when they cheat. In sports, particularly cycling, it is only cheating when you're caught. One of the first tour-winners (about 1907 i think) was caught the year after his victory having cork tied to a car in his mouth dragging him (was it pellissier, petit-breton or...?). Cheating is just such a fundamental part, and if you don't get caught, then it is not cheating. Unless your surname is Rasmussen.
i wont ever forget seeing this...the way he toyed with everyone on the climb dropped back and then destroyed them all...it was amzing..ive loved this sport for so long...it makes me sad that its become fashionable almost to see doping in cycling..always some expose on some one cheating or being caught....dope or not they still have to ride and go through conditions 90% of us wouldnt put our animals out in..a cyclist is a differnt make up from a typical person..be just a wee bit crazy to do it:)
@sprintbass I remember this but I also recall the sickening sight of Virenque and Ullrich wiping away everyone on a stage (cannot recall which year) and Virenque stood up on the pedals all the way up, I thought then it was "not right" Indurains infamous 28 BPs heart rate, and beating everyone in the time trail by MINUTES! that was wierd , Rominger seemed like a robot for years, Upstarts like Berzin, julich et al suddenly being world beaters Addu of course completely jacked up all the time....
Only 4 riders in the top 30 of 1996 Tour de France has not been linked with doping.
Studies have indicated that 80% of the peloton at that time where using some form of doping.
So even though he admitted doping, you can't take away from him that he was a great rider. He was a great strategist and he was more serious than most when it comes to training and preperation.
@RTMOB he just took a lot more!! he was above all a great doper! hematocrite 60 percent, he almost died then because his blood became to thick the team doctor of telekom stated i his book.
Riis didn't take more dope than anyone else that year. + Carlos became arrogant at the end at CSC-SaxoBank, he couldn't stand that the team wasn't riding a 100% for him, when Fränk had the yellow jersey..
Well yeah in a way you can say that all riders back than doped (hmmm maybe still) but Riis was in a way a EPO-junkie !
When your hemocriet is above 50 now a days then your on the list of suspect .
Bjarne had a hemocriet that was 64 !!! They had to wake him up at night every 2 hr cause else there was a big change he died! He wanted more an more and more to win races to win the tour d vivre France (sorry my english is not so good by the way)
You can't be an average cyclist and then win the Tour, even if you are using dope.. just look at the winners from the 90's nearly every of them ham committed use of doping.
Of course al the men in the tour, giro, vuelta they are great ! They have my fully respect ! You can not be average rider and then win something, you are so true bout that... just came back from holiday France, went to puy de dome also... pfff respect and more for those guys its a sport like nothing else... on a bike you can not hide, if ur having bad day, sick enz enz .... the peleton is not wating for no one !!! "Paris is still far;-) " [Joop Zoetemelk qoute]
I can see your point, but if you look at the hemocriet values from the riders of Telekom you will notice that almost all the riders had way to high values! Zabel, Holm and Aldag has since committed an abuse of EPO

I wouldnt say everyone doped back then. The numbers were probably similar to today, about 80% of top pros, maby 25% of top amateurs. Testing hasnt really cracked down, thats a lie from the corrupy UCI system.
Alberto Contadoper had similar VAM values on the Angiliro climb during the Vuelta that Roberto Heras had in 2001.
The performance values of the 1980's from Lemond, were the last real indicators of what is humanly possible, About 5.8 watts per Kilo at 60 minute power output.
Riis doped, absolutely, but so did everyone else back then. Bjarne won partly because of doping, but mostly because he was a great strategist and a smart rider.
At least Riis admitted to his wrongs, and even said they could take his jersey back. I'd like to see some of the other dopers over the last 15 years or so do the same.
i agree, it would be nice to ...have the truth...like indurain and armstrong...i think armstrong was not on doping because his hematocrit was about 137 to 142 and that is low. I heard he had about 150 when he won the tour. He had 152 in spring. If you start with 150 it okay but it should drop, but i did not for armstrong.
Your thinking is sound Armstrong444, but your numbers are off. Go to CyclingNews forums "The Clinc" or CuttingEdgeMuscle forums to see the light.
If Lemond doped, it wasn't on EPO, but I think it's possible he had cortisone shots when riding for Guimard, whether he knew what they were or not, who knows?
You propably mean that hemoglobin was 127 - 142. Hemotocrit cannot be that high, 100% is maximum, meaning the packed blood cell count. Lance is the most tested athlete during the past few years. Couple of hundred drugs tests during his streak and if he was using, he would have been caught because so many other athletes were caught. But, then again, it doesn't proof anything. He could have been using something that doesn't show up in a test but then again, there are always IFs and whatnot.
you know if you search the internet you can find the numbers on his hematocrit.Dr Conconi took notes on the bloodtest and he doped so many athlethes. He had the highest hematocrit, he even tested 56%,his naturally was about 40%. Pantanis has tested on 60% but Bjarne was called mr 60%.According to Willy Voet(festina)did never go over 55%.Even now they are still on drugs, perhaps even more because they beat armstrong and pantanis record up mountains (rasmusen och contador)

Least relevant cyclist in history of the tour de france
levels of EPO are not very relevant.
