This video and the coverage of the event is flawed and slanted to paint the teachers as the victims. The truth, the state can not make the budget work and needs to do something, the Union refuses to bend and thus no agreement on how to meet the budget could be met. The state law requires the mayor to put the teachers on notice that he can not renew the contracts as is, so he was forced by law to issue notice. The union doesn't care about the kids, only thier personal benefits so they lie to you.
Unfortunately, the greatest victims here are the children. Providence Teachers, most of whom go well beyond the call of duty for their students, have been demonized for decades by politicians who refuse to accept accountability for their own fiscal disasters. We must reform the laughably ineffective methods by which we fund our schools.
