its not just about how much "shredding" is being done. the solo fits the song so perfectly. he certainly can rip the guitar a new one, but it wouldnt fit the vibe of this song

Oh, I agree completely. It's not about how many notes per second are being played; it's about how well the solo blends with the rest of the song. Sometimes a solo only has to be a few bends. Still though, calling it "shred" isn't accurate.

shred is basically a slang term meaning do an impressive guitar solo. rivers did the perfect solo for this song. he shreds to the perfect degree every time which is why is so great!

"Shred" is a style of playing, like flamenco, or slap. A solo may be impressive, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "shred." David Gilmour's solos are impressive as fuck, but he certainly does not play shred.
