  • Who's the guy on the keyboards?????

  • I was there and wished I would have been brave and want up and danced with you

  • 20 years later..

  • love the fact that they are still the same! dave dancing the same way he does now lol crazy. in love with the fact that there are still people out there that dont care about being cool. you can tell they love their music.

  • Amazing! "The largest crowd we've ever played to.." Oh if these people only knew of what was to come in just a year or two.... I'd give my life to have been there, unfortunatley i was only 4 years old at the time!

  • whoa thisblows me away.... If only i could have been there! LMAO at Boyd!

  • When I was in college, DMB played in the grass behind our fraternity house back in 1993 in front of a few hundred people (at best). I was right up on the front row in front on Boyd. Loved them then, and love them now. Less than a year later, they were huge.

  • i would do unthinkable things to be able to have been at this show

  • "biggest audience"

    so crazy!

  • Why isn't Stefan playing the Bass? This is the greatest DMB video I have ever witnessed. LOL @ Boyd!

  • @dw0095

he is there to Boyd's right, he is the little 16 year old there.

  • were a little excited on such a nice day ahhahahahah

  • ahhhh the days before Taylor guitars. and actually letting his hair grow. Boyd's dancing is indeed funny. Good to see the pseudo-hippies dug him even then. good stuff!

  • Boyd Tinsley, Dancing Extraordinaire.

  • @tubros7

And to think, now he stands in the corner when he isn't playing lookin' like Morpheus or something! He's awesome... my idol.

  • aww too bad this video doesn't have the Once on a Wild Aftertoon tease before it.

I love these old videos, especially from this show. Thanks.

  • I love this song and video. I can't believe this song has been around since 1992. This is so original..

  • This is .. unbelievable, i have watched this like 20 times now. Dave self promoted so much , he is amazing

  • hahah boyd is a ghetto cowboy, wtf is he wearing

  • Is there anyway to get the whole van ryper concert on dvd or a cd or something?

  • just think he said that was the biggest venue, 10 years later he plays in central park in front of hundres of thousands of fans .. haha

  • LOL Boyd dancing is the best

  • Amazing

  • haha look at boyd dance :)

  • gee, it almost seems fake.

  • You're right, it looks like this is a cover band and not the real band themselves.

  • oh its them. ROFL i love this show

  • HAH! Look at this! 17 years ago. The intro to this song here is almost funny.... as well as other parts...but they have transformed into one of the most incredible groups of all time. His voice has changed a lot. This is an awesome vid. 6/5

  • hahaha wtf boyd... and if only those people knew how big this band would eventually be

  • this is AWESOME but the 2 step @ Giants stadium in 2001 with the Hail Storm is the best yet....

  • I love DMB, this video is great.

  • haha why are they so sick

  • WTF is Boyd doing at 3:57 and 6:24?? His white boy dance??? This stuff is simly classic. I wonder if the hippies in the front have seen this? However Roi is just tearing it up! My how times have changed. I'm going to miss the best sax player in the world.

  • haha probably when they first starting playing this song together and all saw Boyd dancing like that to it they all started laughing and went What the hell is that Boyd?? The Two Step?? hahaha def. on LeRoi though. God his sax is just incrediblee gives me chills.

  • There is not one possession of mine that I wouldn't give to have been at Van Ryper in '92...of course, I would have been only 8 years old.

  • Man, this song has evolved from then to now.

'95 Red Rocks is still the best Two Step I have ever heard

  • Haha, Dave is so fucking awesome xD

Very nice to meet you aaaaaaaalll xD

    I love dmb...

  • I like watching one of these videos with like 50 fans and then going straight to the piedmont park video or the gorge or something and watching how many fans they now have.

  • woah. old lyrics much?

  • Ahh, the sweet sound of LeRoi's horns! He is missed! Lovely video, everyone is dancing terribly! Love it!

  • Hahaha, I love that he says in the beginning that that is the biggest crowd they've had :D A pure story of success and greatness, love Dmb

  • holy crap this is old, wow!

  • Boyd's dance LOL!!

  • i want a time machine!

  • life is short but sweet for certain

  • holy shit boyd is a terrible dancer. this is classic. could be my favorite thing on youtube.

  • LOL Boyd at 6:24!!!

  • DMB=Best Band in the World

  • most def.

  • is that Butch on keys?

  • No Peter Greiser is.

  • Is boyd a cowboy or someting? :)

  • Can't believe BOyd danced like that the entire song LOL

  • i think this is the earliest dave on youtube

  • Stefan must have been like 16 here.

  • 18 :-)

  • 17, his brithday's not til june. :)

  • Impossible not to have a good time..

  • haha i love boyd dancing and the little spanish dave does great stuff

  • it's amazing how much they've grown as musicians...thanks for this great vid...!

  • "This is definitely the biggest bunch of people we've ever collectively stood up in front of."

With so few in attendance and knowing the huge fan base soon to come, that statement just blows me away.

  • FYI this is the first known live performance of Two Step

  • it just blows me away that no one was cheering when he said "we're the dave matthews band"...god the concert he played last night there had to be 600,000 people there!

  • thats amazing.

  • lol, boyds more of a dancer than a violin player hahaha

  • The is the first live performance of Two Step--THANKYOU for putting it up and sharing!

  • boyd is the fuckin man--he dances like a champ

  • honestly, i like dmb much better as they were here

  • haha!!! How awesome would it be if they played this version this summer?!!! I would shit myself, i love it! especially the mexican noise dave does!!!! So fucking awesome!!!!!

  • thats actually boyd finger picking his violin

  • Wow, Boyd can make his violin say "Arriba!"?

  • ROFL!

  • HAHAHA. Boyd Tinsley is AWESOME! Dance Boy!

  • i love peter griesar on the keys. he just adds so much depth to it. so sad he didnt continue on with the band

  • This is so awesome to see. And hilarious. Watch all the videos "Stouggies" has and you can see the whole concert. Watch for the guy in the audience with the ponytail and fanny pack! So 1992. I don't think Boyd would be caught dead in a leather jacket with FRINGE! Hahahaha

  • Boyd still wears goofy stuff like that all of the time.

  • Wow, i saw this video and it is amazing, and the jig that boyd is doing is awesome

  • the change from then to know.

Carter improved like 20 times as much.

Boyd is a lot better and not quite as dorky.

Dave's voice is 20 times better.

Dave's guitar playing is a lot more crisp.

Such a long distance they have covered

  • I almost fell out of my chair when I watched this. Boyd looks so funny doing that white boy dance. LOL! And Dave doesn't even know the words yet. Honestly the only one that sounds good is Roi. I guess practice makes perfect. But the hippies in the front top the cake. This video is priceless.

  • amazing.........can anyone imagine they wil play Central Park and be the huge success they are now...after watching these humble begings...amazing

  • hahahahaha boyd!

this is great, oh how times have changed

  • WTF is Boyd doing?? They must look at this is crack the fuck up. This is where it all started. Amazing!!!

  • i used to swim there as a kid. saw all those concerts there in my teens and twentys.thanks for posting

  • nice...go check out my two step drum cover...peace.

  • this was about two years before they blew up. this brings me so far back, I was in 9th grade wearing a starter jacket and my best friend whose brother went to UVA introduces me to a tape of a college band from virginia! amazing

  • Wow. You wanna do something funny? Watch Two Step at Folsom Field or something like that, then watch this and get a laugh. They've come a long fucking way. Good job fellas!

  • I think this when they came up with their name!! they didn't have one until this show...someone asked them how they wanted to be introduced, and dave didn't have a name for the band so boyd came up with DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. Thanks Boyd!

  • you u kidding me?? that is too funny if it's true.

  • it isn't that dave's dance was sad...dave has said the little jig he does started out a nervous twitch..didnt even know he was doing it at first, then he took off with it and made it into something cool.

  • he sounds like forrest gump

  • peter griesar

  • according to the DMB Almanac this was the debut of Two Step.. all these lucky bastards

  • Two Step, I wonder whatever happened to that one? :-)

  • this was on my 4th birthday

  • I hadn't celebrated my first birthday when this was created.

  • i wonder who is playing that piano because butch didn't start playing with the band until around 98' or 99'

  • peter griesar

  • This is great footage of early dave. What kind of guitar was dave playing? Anyone know..?

  • An Ovation acoustic electric model

  • haha i want even born yet :)

  • You are a lucky young you, live your life to your fullest, try to stay along the light of what you feel is right in you!

  • whats right in me is DAVE MATTHEWS BAND :)

  • wow...dave sure has improved since then...

what made this video great for me, besides the obvious rarity of it, is Boyd's dance from 6:24 to 6:40...that is classic

  • you mean cowboyd?

  • yeah...giddy up!

  • ok u, stougies, get the reward for daves most original fan :)

  • left over hippies from the last grateful dead concert lol

  • This is just incredible stuff. I love DMB

  • look at all the hippies dancing .. lol

  • Holy crap! Humble beginnings, and how special that we get to see this in retrospect. I wonder if all of the people walking around knew how special this was. Would I? Good job DMB for hanging in there. Love the cowboyd...good call.

  • oh gosh it's cowboy Boyd! aka cowboyd.

    this is part of history.

  • dave made up a vast majority of these lyrics

stefan had yet to go through puberty what was he 15?

they booted the keyboardest then got butch!

    Amazing , remarkable old footage

  • They didn't boot Peter Greisar, he just didn't wan't to be touring all the time...so they parted ways.

  • butch is the shitttt!

  • they never booted this keyboardist, he just didn't want to tour all the time. Butch didn't start playing with them until 1998ish?

  • wow lucky people that go to be there, part of history. i was at my first dmb concert here in atlanta piedmont park sept 8 2007, will never for get it the best concert i ever been too, passing umm. u2, green day, queen & paul rodgers. wow it was the best love dmb

  • ah nice. just before i was born.... boyds dance is kinda special. daves dance looks kinda sad to what he does now.

  • wow this is so awsome and classic and boyd is the man

  • haha is it just me..or did boyd's wardrobe go from Gay to SuperGay over the past 15 years.. from cowboy hats and frilled jackets to Mesh tank tops... common boyd

  • They have improved, but the talent was already there. Nice to know the lyrics improved as well...

  • this is basically the first dmb concert with even a decent amount of people...you people who watched this are lucky and caught a glimpse of magic rising!

    Bring back the keyboard solo!!

  • damn they have improved soooo much

  • very cool.

i've seen dmb 16 times in the last 7 years. it's nice to see them way back when.

  • do you have to say that comment on every old dave video. stfu already.

  • wow this is awesome..nice to see some of their really old stuff!.."this is by far the biggest crowd we've ever collected". He shoud have known that in 10 yrs they would be BIG musical..umm..stars

  • by far the oldest dmb concert i've ever seen

  • HAHA, purple sweater and what appears to be sweat pants. Nice outfit. It must be 1992.

  • I like peter greisar on the keys during two step

  • go hippie girls

  • can someone tell me what boyd is wearing and why is he dancing like that lol...oh young dmb

  • Thats cowboy Boyd

  • nice outfit my brother

  • Haha, Roi was a fatass back in the day.

  • this is the debut of two step

  • BadASS oldschool Two Step. Fucking classic

  • Love the hippie chicks in the front

  • if you like dmb, check out my band on my favorites.....weve got that acoustic / blues vibe goin....like your sittin by a camp fire with the djembe, guitars.....reefer!

  • I'ts really quite hilarious how everyone is just walking by not even realizing what the band would turn out to be. I bet two years later they all felt like idiots for not actually watching them.

  • the point of the exercise is to have fun, and everybody obviously is. dork dancer or not, boyd is still my hero.

  • wow! this is so crazy, thanks for posting. man has this song cleaned up or what?!!! haha i love boyd's cowboy get-up and hippie dance. can't picture that now

  • damn, i was in a concert of DMB in lisbon 25.5.07, and now i see that, and it's great to see how the band growed up, they playe
