I had a scramble screen, Looked like a Nintendo screen after you wiggle the game, lol. Then after awhile turning it off & on it just had a white screen then slowly bled to a black screen. I did this & it worked for me. That thermal paste that was on there was rock hard! I had this computer for 4 years & had no problems tell today. I was just watching a video, Then scramble screen. I seen one of these videos on how to fix a video card problem. way before having this problem with my Video Card : )
The thermal paste gets hard after you work with your computer and it needs to be changed whenever you remove the cooling system over the processor and graphic chip.
@sumoqy I wonder how much people tossed there XPS notebooks out, just because they thought it can't be fixed. I just got new computer parts, I just used the thermal paste that came with my Corsair A50 CPU Cooler.
Yes I agree with you thermal paste is very good for the connection between the chip and cooler, actually I would have used it if I had it that time, but I was in hurry and didn't have thermal paste so I didn't.
I haven't tried the heat gun, but yes I think it's a good way to fix this issue of graphic card too. Thanks for your comment.
I think the over heating causes this graphic card problem. The problem is you can't change the graphic card because it's built in the motherboard, in my case I wont buy a new motherboard for my 2 years old dell.
what the secret behind this.actually my graphics card also showed this kind of prblm ..so i gave it to the service center for replace ma graphics card..
Well the secret behind this is the heating that makes the graphic chip disconnected from the motherboard and heating the chip again this way or any other way (heat gun or hair dryer) reconnects the graphic card with the motherboard.
I took gave my computer to service shop when i first had this problem and they said it needs a new motherboard. What the hell!! it would cost me about 200 $ or more. So i fixed it myself in this way :-)
I did this but with a hairdryer... But am still having problems when leaving the laptop off for a while. I have had this problem recently and used other ways to fix the laptop. But none have stuck. I did this with a hairdryer earlier. And it worked. But left it off for a while, as i made some dinner. Came back to it and still same problem. Any suggestions on a fix?

@sumoqy i use the hair dryer to do it few time , each a minute and it work!!

i like your method, but you could of used a heat gun and replaced the thermal paste
i do that all the time and a heat gun will do less damage to the surface
and replacing the thermal paste will help the chip stay much cooler

@ Xavier
I don't think you can upgrade the graphic card unless you buy a new motherboard because the graphic card is built in.
