Earlier today my brother was just annoying the fuck outta me saying that if I didn't let him in he would break my door down. I stood up and was like "you shall not pass!!!" and I frigging round house kicked him in the face.
Bad thing to do I know but I don't give a fuck. It was epic.
It's good that Gandalf is such an amazingly cool character, because otherwise I would have been really pissed for the death of an equally amazing, but nighmarish creature, the Balrog.
Gandalf doesnt die....... he survives the fall and follows the Balrog through the mines and up Durin's Tower where he fights and slays him. Then Gwaihir the Eagle rescues him from the peak. Though his transformation to Gandalf the White is in fact that he is taking Saruman's role as Saruman has been corrupted by the rings, Gandalf effectively becomes Saruman as he is one of the Istari- in reality a spirit
I love it. So much. The scene were they first see each other, face to face. Goosebumps. They both know exactly who the other is. They're both Maiar and neither one is afraid of the other. They hate each other and they know exactly how this has to end. Such a great scene.
I just love how Tolkien made Gandalf like a messiah. He fights the darkness of the world and the devils, which in Middle Earth is the Balrog of Morgoth and the Dark Lord Sauron. Gnadalf the grey falls, but rises again as Mithirandir, The White Rider.
I know it's sad when gandalf dies but frodo's high voice is funny to me! Don't get me wrong I don't want gandalf to die and I love him! I don't know why he risked his life fighting.
it's a shame when you come back to see this part of the movie because you know that Gandalf survives, it makes you sad but feelings are not the same...the first time I saw it...damn I cried
the battle between gandalf and the balrog is to simply put it...EPIC :D....gandalf fighting his twisted brother that turned to the dark side, yes balrogs for those who don't know are corrupted maiar, gandalf is a maiar and sauron is also a maiar thats why the balrog didn't answered to sauron because sauron was like a brother, would you listen to your brother if yer father wasn't home? :))
@Drizzt1545 I remember hearing in the director's commentary that for this scene, they had told elijah wood that the audience should see so much grief in his face that it would scare them. He pulled it off!
I KNOW in the book it's "fly you fools" but no matter how hard i listen for "fly" i hear him say "flutter you fools", cuz last time I checked the word "fly" doesn't have two syllables and doesn't have a "ta" accent in the middle of it...greg
2:21 - Listen to Boromirs voice, it's perfect with the song! Everytime I listen to the soundtrack I am dissapointed that Boromir's voice isn't there to shout "ARAGORN!". Also the absence of the arrows hitting against stone leaves a gap in the song on its own.
One of my favourite scenes from the LOTR trilogy. I remember watchin' this back in 2001 with a packed out audience. When this happened everyone went soooooooo quiet. Brilliant.
They looked back. Dark yawned the archway of the Gates under the mountain-shadow. Faint and far beneath the earth rolled the slow drum-beats: doom. A thin black smoke trailed out. Nothing else was to be seen; the dale all around was empty. Doom. Grief at last wholly overcame them, and they wept long: some standing and silent, some cast upon the ground. doom, doom. The drum-beats faded. (Tolkien, pg. 336)
the song is called " The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm", the last part of this soundtrack is the very sad moment after the fall of Gandalf. Thumb this up if this part mean something for you.
When they got so many Oscars,my faith on the academy awards was restored...and then I lost it again because of some shitty movies getting oscars too. This was a true masterpiece end of story
Stands and saves his friends at the cost of his own life. That is heroism. He probably knew his chances were next to nil of making it out with them and none at all for everyone if he didnt do something, and still did it anyways. In the next film you can see even when falling to his death he STILL fights every inch of the way down with the beast. If only we all had that kind of courage.
@s4msam Oh gee, really? I never knew they weren't real, by god (another fake being). Its called "suspension of belief" and this is a moving scene. There is a reason why it moves ppl with imagination, you know. Should try developing some of that sometime. Makes life and such things as film and poetry far more enjoyable.
i first saw this scene in a video game called Daxter. . . i didnt know what it was referencing until i saw the movie and i was completely amazed at how spectacular this one scene is! i wasnt on the edge of my seat, i was on the floor hoping gandalf wouldnt die. . .then i cried. . . . . . . . . .until i read the book and watched the rest of the movies! :D HE LIVES!!!!!
@DaveDinnerDude Gandalf does not need to be saved, read the book, i think the place was collapsing and and they were being chased by orcs, and a lot of other reasons
@groovespermm It's been a while since I read the book, it was in highschool. But did the fellowship know he doesn't need saving and that he'd become Gandalf The White? I don't think so. A normal person would just have dashed towards the cliff and grabbed his arm. Unless they are under the impression the bridge could not hold them. Or the Balrog was still a danger.
@DaveDinnerDude oh, and in the book Gandalf was drawn down by the balrog's whip at once, so he wasn´t even hanging on the edge before the bridge collapsed.
@DaveDinnerDude Plenty of time? Did you not see the arrows coming from everywhere seconds after Gandalf fell? As others said, it's different in the book, but in the movie the main reason Gandalf let go was because he didn't want them to risk their lives trying to save him.
@mattjames2111 Well, the slowmo sure gives the impression they could have had a picnic and then go back for him. Besides, why does Boromir use his big shield to cover? Still a great movie though.
God the acting is incredible. When Gandalf falls, Aragorn staring in disbelief. Again, when they're out of the mine, and the hobbits are mourning gandalf, so powerful.
@Respectthewilderness frodo is like 3 ft 4.... he couldn't have pulled him up, never mind the balrog having wings? most would have thought the balrog could have flew back up.
