Judith Durham, australias greatest contribution to mankind! The boys are no mean musicians their harmonies add velvet to the song. Great protest song from the sixties - I played this song to a group of younger people and they thought it was a twee diity! I then explained about the black radioactive rain....................
but certainly surpassed by JD's idol, Joan Baez. Check out the definitive version on youtube that Queen Joan recorded Live in Japan. This version is rather pedestrian (like a march) and why the strings?
There is no voice more clear than Baez. JD spent her career covering Baez, Collins and PP&M recordings and far worse, a lot of schmaltz. Her career and voice are not in the same leauge with Baez, by any stretch, and she'd be the first to agree. Baez was the first person inducted into the BRITISH folk Hall of Fame. Strange how she and Collins were always more convincing on the English and Irish ballads than the natives (or commonwealthers), not to mention Americana and gospel.
Pretty song. Of course the Searchers had the big hit. But this better IMO. We all owe janmarsh (and dazbluey and good ol' proculled and a few others) for posting these lesser known songs along with their monster hits.
I wasn't wild about this song the first time I listened to it but now I listen to regularly; a previous poster mentioned The Searchers' version...yes, also nice harmonies on that performance
This masterpiece has been covered by so many wonderful artists but has it been done any better than this? Ms Durham is surely one of the worlds great vocalists, in our generation at least. Simply magnificent.
