Great music by the late Ron Goodwin who should have been knighted for his contribution to cinema music! Some versions of the video give excellent info as to how the film was made and there are some very interesting points!!!!
Did you know that Many mock-ups of Spitfires and Hurricanes were made in the months prior to filming. Some had lawn mower engines fitted and could be taxied around the airfield, but if they braked too hard they would flip up onto their nose. This happened several times in front of the cameras and some of the footage was eventually used in the film.
Germany were in no way equipped to launch an invasion. Just look at the D-Day landings that took over 2yrs to plan.
Also would they have bothered occupying every inch of Britain? They should've as the RN could retreat to Orkney although the sinking of Royal Oak in 1939 would have kept people alert.
This was merely a token gesture...but does not take anything away from the people involved, on both sides.
thats right ... but on the other side .. was britain prepared to stop an invasion? We all can be lucky, that Hitler didnt win the war. Otherwise most of us now would be dead .. or never have had been born. The plans for exterminating most of the planet were ready at that time. And what most germans dont realize .. they/we would have been the first ones after war to be selected into "usefull" and "worthless"
This piece of music (coupled with the scenes of row after row of Heinkels that accompanies it in the film) really shows how incredible the RAF's victory in the BoB was. The Germans were at the top of their game and hadn't been stopped once.
Well said, also out numbered about 4 to 1. Had Britain lost that conflict I think ultimately Russia would have been defeated and had the Americans ever become in volved in the war they'd have had a near impossible task to liberate Europe. But you are quite right, the victory was sublime.
It would certainly have given Germany a heck of an advantage, being able to fight on just one front, and presumably the Atlantic Wall and so on would have been that much lower on the priority lists too. It's possible however that with the defeat of Britain the USA would have felt the need to enter the war- and the pressure they would have brought to bear on Ireland and Portugal to help them would have been immense. The Iberian Peninsular and Ireland could have been the scene of the Western front
Great point about Irland and the Iberian Peninsular. I think Hitlers mistake in invading russia was in thinking Britain was already defeated. In wasn't and put a strain on Germany they could have done without in Russia. Then again Japan bombed Pearl Harbour anyway, and out of nowhere Hitler declared war on USA anyway. Always interesting to theorise tho, what the World would have been.
One of the two distinct musical themes from this film. A film where, the Luftwaffe and Royal Air Force dealt with loss......The Luftwaffe were fighting a losing battle, air supremacy achieved...where's the invasion? Give us another 3 or 4 yrs, we'll be ready........
I liked Sir William Walton's rejected score much better (though the final film does retain "Battle In The Air") which is available on C.D. and as an isolated score track on the D.V.D.
What country would be worthy of such a great tune. Well the answer would be Germany. Mainly because the "Luftwaffe March" is written very much in the style of the Prussian marches. See the Konigsgratzer March as an example - it is on youtube somewhere (try to ignore the neo nazis)
This has been pointed out on a few occasions over the last few months and I must say it's a rather odd title for a theme to such a great British movie. On a somewhat similar note I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier of WWI. There is talk of a state funeral and MR Patch richly deserves one as the last representative of 'the lost generation'. The last tangible link to the vast army of the great war has been severed...R.I.P. MR Patch
@river2walk Mate have you ever seen this film, the Luftwaffe march is played in the intro to the film and the battle of Britain theme is played in the end credits
@010110102 - I loved the original BATTLE OF BRITAIN 'Main Theme' and it should never have been changed, it defined the movie for me. A big mistake to change it.
Ron Goodwin should have benn knighted for his services to Film Theme music! What sad Prime Minister would not bow to this? Well Blair didn't even reply! Ron Goodwin gave his all for Miss Marple and everything to the Vattle of Britain and we could not even knight the man!
Shame on the UK politicians!
I still think he should be knighted, posthumously!
His family and the world's music lovers deserve it! After Maurice Jarre, whose film themes do you remember?
I love the movie themes of Elmer Bernstein, Max Steiner and many more and the theme that Maurice Jarre wrote for Ryans Daughter is one of my all time favorites....but somehow Ron Goodwins war movie themes can 'stir the blood'' like no other....the likes of 'Where Eagles There' and many more are unbeatable!!
If Germany had won the war the world would have been run by terrorists. I'm too young to have fought in the war but I'm damn proud of those brave men who did.
i think everyone is proud of what those men and boys did even if they dont admit it but me i love the subject of the battle of britain, it was the golden age of the air war where true skill was needed not like nowadays where its fire and forget -_-
along with no jews, no american jazz music, no freedom of speech, no independant press publications, not much food as Germany had to cut food demands to focus the economy on the war, no bbc, no English people. I have been learning about the Nazis for my A level, and it really was not good. Look up Volksgemeinschaft and Richard Walther Darres speech on British people, thats what would have happened if Germany won the war, we would have been ruined.
were not even allowed to call 'a tramp with a sharpened stick', 'a tramp with a sharpened stick' because its racist and potentially offensive to those who use sharpeners and those who have come into contact with a stick
"and this was really played by the german bands during the war:)." How silly, considering this song was made specifically for the movie, by an English composer, the only thing it has to do with the Luftwaffe in reality is the title.
Excellent Propagaganda!!! Wonderful music!!!!

This is just the German theme. The Britsh theme is very......British, and one of the best ever made for a movie.

Very nice. This is beautiful music to a beautiful film about Britain's finest.
But could I ask that the long periods where no sound id heard at the end of some of these vids be removed. it makes it take longer to load.
