@HelenaKoonings and @andrewwinans Leigh Ann is actually the blonde at 00:42 on the ground with the suitcases on the right towards the Egermans with an apron on. Yeah the camera moves around so much it's hard to see. I would have loved to seen this
This looks mediocre at best. ALNM definitely requires a cast of singers who can act (as opposed to actors who can sing) to carry the score, which almost seems more like operetta than musical theatre to me. Especially with this particularly bare-bones pit orchestra, the thinness of some of the actors' voices is really apparent (and KZJ is clearly just gumming along at the end).
@lavalamp625 A saxophone doesn't feature in the orchestrations it is an english horn. But no matter the opinion you can't say that for this productions the orchestrations are beautiful I saw this production in london where the revival opened first and it worked better then the original, better direction and just a lot more elegant

It's weird I know how producers are getting more and more cheap on the amount of musicians they are willing to pay salaries for, but these orchestrations I think give the show a more reserved feel, with all the power coming from the woodwinds and french horn, there being no brass section, but these are by far some of the better orchestration of the day by Jason Carr, who also did the La Cage revival, considering smaller is sadly the way Broadway is heading, but I
don't think in this case it takes away from it, it only gives it a more reserved feel, as opposed to loud and big, not that loud and big is ever bad, it's just not what lovers of theoriginal album are familiar with. It's not like they're empty and terrible like those of Shrek, just smaller.
@WWEQAF I saw the production a few weeks ago and thought it was fantastic. A fantastc cast and just an all around gorgeous production. Definitely worth it.
@altodivo I like Waddinham, but if people complained about Zeta-Jones being too young for this role, Waddingham definitely was as well. As for her performance, I can't say, as I live in the US and didn't see her in the role...I did like her as the Witch in "Into The Woods", though.
I was lucky enough to see this last night - and it was AMAZING! I'd seen a production of the show in California three years earlier, but I knew I had to see Catherine and Angela on Broadway. Needless to say, I was not disappointed - especially sitting in the 7th row. If you have the chance to see this show, TAKE IT!! :D
Sondheim doesn't write the orchestrations. Tunick wrote the original orchestrations. Thank him for the lushness of the original. The new chamber orchestrations sound much better in the theater.
I didn't say Sondheim orchestrated it. I was referring to the idea that when one writes a score with such deference to Ravel, Chopin and Schubert, maybe don't orchestrate it like Steve Reich.
Oh the genius of marketing a star! I bet if they cast Harvey Fierstein as Tony in the Revival of WEST SIDE STORY some of you would say "He so looks the part and is such a great fit with Phyllis Diller as Maria."

Please tell me Catherine Zeta Jones doesn't act like that all the time? She's destroying it. Hannah Waddingham was incredible, this doesn't even compare.
Ms. Zeta-Jones is impeccable - her casting here was a no-brainer. She is a ravishing Desiree. And Ms. Lansbury? She and Sondheim have always been a match made in heaven, and this seems to be no exception. I'm surprised she's never been asked to play Madame Armfeldt before. I'm also really looking forward to seeing Erin Davie as Charlotte - I've been a fan ever since her turn in GREY GARDENS (for which she should have been nominated for the Tony!). Hopefully this year will be her turn!

the five hours aaron lazar spends with erin davies is the time he spends away from me. LORD, that man is sexy!

I actually like the restraint in the orchestration. It sort of carries with the subtext of the musical itself.
Either way you look at it, A Little Night Music is sophisticated. Beautiful, elegant, charming and sophisticated.

Can anybody point out Leigh Ann Larkin to me in this, I can't seem to find her unless I'm crazy. Is that her at 0:49 folding a blanket on the ground?

@andrewwinans @andrewwinans I'm pretty sure she's the one in the grey dress and white apron up front and crouched down at 0:49.

@andrewwinans No, the one up front with brown hair at 0:30 if I'm not mistaken.

I was lucky enough to have seen Glynis Johns and Hermoine Gingold in the original . Wish I still lived in NYC so I could experience this production.

Sondheim wrote a lush, impressionistic score. None of that smoothness is carried over into this chamber orchestration. :(

Go to the country for longer than a weekend. We'll give Michael Douglas the directions. Thus far not happy I bought the advanced tickets.
