@ImaginedWriter Everyone knows about the Spartan king Leonidas and his 300 Spartans making the famous last stand at Thermoplyae but very few knows about the Athenian statesman Themistocles. He realized that the best or perhaps the only way to defeat the Persians is through naval warfare. With ships, huge quantities of supplies and manpower are easily transported to the frontline. The Greeks needed to control the Aegean Sea to prevent the much needed supplies to the Persians.
Hi what's the name of the video you got this from? I have watched it before and I'd really like to nkow what the name is... I learn better with visuals for my exams.
Yeah, partially right, he was captured during exile, and subsequently took a post with the Persian Empire near Miletus. He served as an advisor to the court of Sardis on how best to avoid future entanglements with Greece. Though he died almost 30 years before the Peloponnesian war. I'm guessing he would've been remembered right up there with Leonidas had he not defected.
what are these nonsense you're saying? atheneans send him to exile and he flee to Persia and he died there cause he never wanted to guide Artaxerxis army against his own country men. He wasnt even in Greece during the Peloponissian War!
@TonyN737 according to Thucydides Themistocles and Pausanias had betrayed their cities and Greece before the Pelloponesian war, when Athens and Sparta were still friends
@TonyN737 He wasn't a traitor. Greeks betrayed him but he didn't. When Artaxerxis told him to lead the persian army against Greece he commited suicide.
@K3lin It is an irony that a great hero like Themistocles took refuge in the very nation that he had fought against to protect his country. He entered the service of Persian king Artaxerxes I where he became a governor of the Greek populated district of Magnesia. Whether he died from suicide or natural causes is debatable. Until today the actual cause of his death is still unknown.
im from Hellas (greece) and my name is Themistocles, nice video

Themistocles was far greater than Pericles. Athens struck a great blow at her head when she struck down her greatest son.

Democracy is the greatest disaster that ever befell mankind, and it would have been better for the world if this man never existed.
