I have the original Vinyl still in great shape. One of my fondest memories of my cannabis blessed youth. Then my young adult life spent living & working in New York City during the beginning of SNL.
While Chevy Chase was singing this, he was trying to get a three or four battery flashlight to work. Without looking, he removed the batteries, flipped them around and tried the light again. It didn't work.
He did this several more times during the song. Finally, at the end of the song, the batteries were in the right order and the flashlight worked!
Also, John Belushi was the guy who yelled "Hey You!" from the back of the hall.
@mad02420 I saw the show at the time also. The way I remember it, he flipped the batteries back and forth, and at the end the batteries and flashlight flew out of his hand. He looked panicked for a moment... and then reached into his pocket and pulled out another flashlight.
The cover is a take off from Woodstock. Second City TV Chicago, John Belushi, Dan Aykaroyd, etc., before SNL. I still have the original vinyl of "Lemmings" from my college days back in the early 70's.
@Bogframe, the original cast at the Village Gate was John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Garry Goodrow, Christopher Guest, Paul Jacobs, Mary-Jenifer Mitchell, Alice Payten. Christopher Guest went on to do "SpinalTap" fame. Having worked in the recording industry at the time in NYC, being familiar with music production I would say Mary-Jenifer Mitchell and Alice Payten are singing the background vocals behind Chevy Chase on Colorado Nat'l Lampoon 1973 Lemming's.
Thank you for posting...I've been looking for this song for over a year now. I used to love National Lampoon, John Prine, Firesign Theater, Monty Python! Oh those were the days!
