@tellyman6688500 The bolt comes forward pretty hard, I think the way the camera is positioned it looks like I'm pushing it forward. Actually I just give it a sharp rap with the heel of my palm. I've been lucky and avoided "Garand thumb" so far!! (knock on wood!)
@FargoMarc thats what i meant, the sharp rap as you call it, i call that a forward assist, needed to close the bolt properly. however my dads garand's bolt had to be secured with one hand while loading, and then to remove the hand very fast. he never had any garand thumb either, if done properly its easy to avoid you know. keep on shooting, and happy new year by the way.
After looking at the prices of the remaining Service Grade "Specials" on the CMP website ($895), the Field Grade HRAs and SAs are starting to look better. I haven't heard if the HRA or SA straight Service Grades will ever be back.
@bwhip There's nothing wrong with a field grade, they shoot fine, they just aren't as pretty. I advise everyone to get one while they can. The M1 carbines are gone and they aren't coming back again, someday the Garands will all be gone as well.
@FargoMarc The CMP started selling Service Grade HRAs and SAs again on 1/3/12 (with a price increase). I got my paperwork mailed on 1/4. Now comes the agonizing wait!
@bwhip I had to wait about 6 weeks. I did get the email announcing they were selling 2000 service grade M1's and now I hear they are nearly all sold out already!!
nice rifle. I have a 1954 H&R M1 from the CMP. i got the service grade. and if you're looking to replace the stock, the new ones from CMP are really nice. (i bought one)
So how does your Field Grade Garand perform for you? I'm saving up for a Garand from CMP and I think I'm going Field Grade because from the sounds of it, it's in good condition.
@shdowhunt60 It shoots like a champ! :-) I had to zero it in a little bit when I first got it, it was striking very low and to the right, but now it is dead-on accurate! Never had a jam, it is just wonderful to shoot. With the field grade , the wood is in rougher shape and cosmetically it won't be as pretty, but you will still be getting a good, decent shootable rifle. Good luck and if you need any help with the CMP's process let me know, I've ordered from them twice now.
@FargoMarc Cool! Thanks, I'll certainly get that when I have the money. Will be a while though. If I have questions, I'll definitely send them your way!
Both the US and Canada ALWAYS claim that the people came from their country and thats why people say that the people are Canadian or American, hell some even have dual citizenship. It doesn't really matter. That fact is that John Garand designed one of the best carbines of all time and doesn't really matter where he was born or where he moved to, it's all about the gun!
hey, the ak- 47 is russian but it was based on the german mp-44. the fn fal is based on the gewer 43 but it is supposed to be belgian. so there is no way to know what exactly the m1 is. i know one thing for sure, it is a great rifle!!!
@20thcenturyfilmdocs I allways wanted to buy a 1903 Springfield, but here in Germany they are harldy to find. And if you finde one, which is in good shape it is to expensive.
@FargoMarc I live in a small village between Hannover and Wolfsburg in Niedersachsen. During my time in the Bundeswehr I was stationed near Bremen, but right now I am studding electronic engineering in Braunschweig.
@catkiller60 It is not that easy, due to the paper work on the import.
Actually I can get a 1903 A1 for 1390€ (1980$) and/or a 1903 A3 for 1590€ (2265$). And there is another limitation because I am only allowed to buy two weapons each half year
@0Kahless0 you have to come here to get it for ($250.00 U.S.) at a flea market most of them still shoot. i see alot of them when i go relic hunting. when you get on the airplane to go back to europe they will charge you ($50.00 U.S.) to bring the gun onboard the plane but it must be in a hardcase with a combination lock.
@FargoMarc Aww hell, I'll take the M-1 Garand over my AK-47 any day! Yeah, the Springfields are harder to get, you basically have to special order them if you want anything decent...so many of them fell into disuse and just got deactivated and used in rifle-corp squads in marching bands, for being so well balanced..such a shame they got the barrels plugged. But my 1903A3 still shoots LOL
Hi FargoMarc, that's a nice rifle, it sounds good. I suppose by now someone else has already mentioned. As a coach, croos your right thumb over the top of the stock, or rest your thumb atop the stock. Both of these grip changes might improve your groups. Forgive me for butting in. I like your rifle.
@ClutchPedalReturnSpr Thanks for the comment. I'll try resting my thumb on top of the stock- I don't cross over on the Garand because I get smacked in the nose every time that happens!
It's a funny thing ignorant Canadians would claim that it's a Canadian rifle because it was never even used by the Canadian military. Just goes to show you what all that cold does to their tiny socialist minds.
@dawsonguy1234567890 In Canada, is the 8-round magazine allowed to use with your Garand? I have heard Canada has pretty strict rules on capacity so I was just wondering if you had to modify the gun or anything. What year was it manufactured? We'll have to agree to disagree on the Garand's origins, but happy shooting all the same. Wish I had kept my Canadian-built Lee Enfield.
As a Canadian and a Garand owner, I really do hate when people claim a Canadian invented it. He may have been born here but being raised in the states since he was a toddler hardly counts.
Best of both worlds at the range is to bring the Garand and my Cbroad arrow stamped No.4 mk1 out...Old allies back together :)
@jettagtx16v Well said . I am jealous that you have a Canadian #4 Mk1, I used to have a 1942-dated Long Branch #4 and I sold it years back, I kick myself every time I think about it. I have nothing bad to say about the Lee-Enfield, they are great rifles. Happy shooting!
@jettagtx16v I see them from time to time down here, a lot of the ones I find are Australian. More than the gun it's the price of ammo that is keeping me from buying one, .303 is rather pricey here. I'll say this, compared to the Mauser and Mosin-Nagant, the Lee-Enfield's action beats them all. I can see why the Germans thought they were facing machine guns in 1915 at Mons, when it was really just infantry with their Enfield rifles. The Enfield cycles smooth as butter and so fast!
i also have a springfield born in 1954 cmp purchase, love it and oh yes i will be buried with it! it's as much a canadian invention as mexican food!!!!! take off aye.....
All the Canadians have to do to prove that the M1 is a Canadian weapon stolen by the US is to show us a Canadian produced M1 that says property of the Canadian government somewhere on it. That is unlikely considering that Canada remained part of the Commonwealth of Great Britain throughout WWII and up until the Canada Act of 1982. As part of the commonwealth of Britain, Canada would have had British weapons for the military and wouldn't have produced its own.
Yes, the rifle was invented by a Canadian. But keep in mind, when he was SEVEN, his family moved to America. Now, how much Canadian enginering can you gleem at the age of seven? He was educated in America by Americans. Its an American gun.
@Transporter1022 Rightly said... also, he was a Springfield employee... and John Pederson was also influential in some of the design. I don't know how much, but from what I understand both were shooting (pun) for the US contract. Pederson invented an ingenious device for the M1903 that enabled it to fire .30 cal pistol ammo
@drumtommyful Do your parents know you talk like this, kid? I'm not going to debate a mumbling prepubescent airsoft / Call of Duty hero, come back in a few years when you are all grown up and we can have an intelligent conversation. I hope your daddy catches you using those naughty words on the internet and takes your Legos away.
@drumtommyful Dumbass, the Canadians didn't manufacture the Weapon. The U.S. Govt did. More so, the Springfield Armory under the contract via the U.S. Govt. Don't be a Douche.....Nothing against Canadians but it's not nor was it ever a Canadian Rifle... Case Closed... NEXT.....
@M1ASniper Be careful, Mumbles there might pop a cap in yo' ass with his toy airsoft gun. He's a straight-up G from the mean streets of Gagetown, New Brunswick.. He swore at me...I'm terrified...
@0100110101001011 This is a field grade and yes, they are safe to shoot. Mine fired perfectly right out of the box, but as always it's best to have a gunsmith check it over before shooting.
You think the m1 garand will be around in 2 years..ive come to really respect this gun after my grandpas(both sides) served in ww2 and how they said it saved their lives.. Ive fired my grandpas and its amazing
@95000026 Have fun, I'm jealous as hell. Be sure to bring an extra $100 and get a spam can of their Greek ammo- it's pretty good stuff, clean shooting and already packed in the enbloc clips- you can just zip the can open and fire away.
@95000026 Oh, I didn't know you were driving down there in person, I thought you were going to order it through the mail like I did. In that case I think you can just show up with your ID.
@95000026 Cool! The spam-cans of ammo that they sell are a pretty good deal as well, it's already packed in clips, ready to shoot. The CMP is a great organization, just be patient though as it'll take at least a month for your paperwork to be processed. They send you email updates every step of the way though.
@95000026 LOL Yugo Ak's are the best! Yep, I got a field grade, and am quite happy with it. Throat and muzzle are both about a 4. Not super but not horrible either. Most of the CMP Garands have been rebarreled, I was lucky in that mine has the original barrel, 1954-dated rifle with a barrel dated 11-54, my friend that ordered with me got a 1943-dated Garand with a 1951-dated barrel. I think a lot of these rifles are coming out of Greece. Have fun!
@95000026 No worries. It just seems like I keep getting emails from non-shooters, airsoft heros, etc that want to bicker about things, one kid had a fit because I called my AK-47 "Yugoslavian" when *parts* of it were from CAI. Another genius called me an idiot and said my M1 carbine fires "9mm pistol rounds." So I do get testy at times, sorry. Anyway, if you like the Garand, don't think about buying one, just do it! $500 from the CMP and you'll have no regrets! Happy shooting.
@95000026 Also, if you go through the CMP, they sell brand new unfinished stocks for about $150, you can stain it as light or as dark as you want. Mine is pretty dark but I have seen some that look like Hershey bars, they are almost black. That's the half the fun of ordering from the CMP- not knowing what you get until you open the box, kind of like Christmas.
@95000026 Have you ever actually fired a Garand? They have a hard recoil and I for one don't like getting smacked in the nose by own thumb. I hold my Mauser the same way and it's never affected the accuracy. Thanks for the advice but I'm not some suburban yuppie who bought this on a whim and has never handled a gun before, I've been shooting this way for many years and it works for me.
@FalseShadowx Hmmm...they were around 4-5", which I don't think is bad considering it's an old surplus rifle and the bore isn't the greatest, and I was using 1963-dated Greek Army (HXP) ammunition. The rifles you get from the CMP aren't tack-drivers, you probably won't be getting 1" groups at 500 yards with them, but for the price they are good, solid shooters and a piece of American history. Message me if u want more info on th CMP- I'm happy to help!
@FargoMarc Thanks a lot. I'm thinking of getting one, my friends should get here in about 3 weeks. I've been asking as many people as I can to see what kind of accuracy I can expect. About 2-4" seems to be the average.
@FalseShadowx I've never fired a 700 but it's probably comparable, though it does have an iron buttstock so you definitely feel the recoil. After a few clips you'll have a bruise on your shoulder. It's a hard recoil but nothing the average shooter can't handle.
Nice Garand man! Looks like you have a very nice rifle for a field grade. I also recently received an M1 from the CMP. It's too bad .30-06 is expensive or I would shoot it more!
@bsrman36 Thanks for the compliment, your Garand is quite nice! You can sometimes find good deals on ammo from the CMP, but yeah, it is pricey, I hate having to ration it!!
@FargoMarc amen to that. I was talking to some guys at the club today that were recalling when CMP used to give them ammo for free! "man those were the good 'ol days..." they were all saying
That one looks pretty nice for a field grade, what did the muzzle and throat gauge at? Thanks for posting your video!
Wdroster 1 week ago
@Wdroster I've actually never checked the the muzzle or throat, although I am curious. For a field grade I am very impressed by the condition

Okay first thing.... Your thumb on your right hand gos over the stock you rest it on the side... Bur it's a nice rifle you got there

What kind of groups do you get? Nice rifle.
FalseShadowx 1 year ago
@FalseShadowx I guess I've never measured them but at 100 yards it brings them in quite nicely.
FargoMarc 1 year ago
@FargoMarc Ok... Nicely like 6", 2" 1", what?
FalseShadowx 1 year ago

FalseShadowx 1 year ago
@FalseShadowx Don't think about it, go for it! :-) The price is right and it's an important piece of history.

@FargoMarc How is the recoil on it? I have a standard barrel .308 Remington 700. Just wondering how it might compare. Thanks again.
FalseShadowx 1 year ago

FargoMarc 1 year ago
@FargoMarc amen to that. I was talking to some guys at the club today that were recalling when CMP used to give them ammo for free! "man those were the good 'ol days..." they were all saying
