Pro Wrestling's very first Black Heavyweight World's champion of any nationality - not only that, but he was apart of a great tag team (The APA) and was a truly great WWE wrestler for many years. He HAS to go into the WWE Hall of Fame.
@cbaldwinjr you aint lyin, I watched them destroy the Steiners on more than one occasion, when they were wearing the masks. They even took it the LOD. But the Steiners were there bitch for a little while till they lost those masks
This was a great moment Ron Simmons had an great career. He should be in the HOF not jokes like Drew Carey. It's too bad that now a days he's been reduced to a simple catchphrase....DAMN!!!
How come Ron Simmons' last gimmick in WWE was so tacky and one-dimensional? He was WCW champion, and he wasn't a world champion in the WWF, but he was still the NOD leader and did promos.
I agree that Vince has always been racist towards Black wrestlers. I'm Latino and I always liked the way he portrayed Latino wrestlers, but the way he treated Black wrestlers was just horrible. Honestly, when Big Ron won the WCW title I was happier than when Eddie Guerrero won the WWE title at WM 20. Black folks always got it worse than Latinos in wrestling, and so did every else. Just look at Masa Chono, Taka Michinoku, the Jung Dragons, the Samoans, etc. Wrestling is RACIST all the way!
@feydivan98 yeah Vince hates blacks, everyone happy bout Rtruth, but watch what happens once he starts outshining Cena Vince is gonna bury him. Fact: No black person has ever won the WWE world heavyweight title(THE BELT ON RAW) NOT THE WCW BELT ON SD. The Rock won the WWE title , but he is not fully black, as much as i love him i hate to say it.
@Palsharpton Look at Kofi Kingston, Shelton Benjamin, Chad Gaspard, and Truth. All those guys are AMAZINGLY talented but will never get to the upper echelons of the wrestling business just because they are Black. I like Sin Cara and Alberto Del Rio, but they're practically being forced on TV and the WWE wants to endear them to the fans but they have little natural charisma, they're just way too foreign for the American audience.
@Palsharpton The only 2 Black wrestlers who ever got any sort of respect were Big Ron and Booker T, but they were the cream of the crop. Kofi Kingston and R-Truth are right up there with them, but Vince doesn't want the Black man to get too big. With his son-in-law Trips running the show and protecting his legacy, the racism in the business is still as rampant as it always has been.
@feydivan98 I made a video on wwe racist towards blacks, check out my uploads, I also have some of R-truth old Tna footage when he was heel and world champ there
@WWEFan7786 JYD should have been the IC champion at Wrestlemania 1. Kamala could have been a champion. eg. tag champ with Seeka or even have a singles title. I never liked Bad News Brown, but he was a great wrestler and he should ahve been given a title reign, any title reign. Tony Atlas was not used properly as well. he was a tag champ with Rocky Johnson ONCE. Vince McMahon doesn't use his talent wisely.
Cool tribute idea. I remember seeing the report on this from the weekend he won it back in the day. This may be the most exciting result in wrestling history.
The WWE game Simmons two pretty good runs with the Nation and the Acolyte angle...I don't really think that's too bad for a guy who was semi-limited in the ring.
@taekwon3000 What? I was telling the truth, I didn't say that he sucks or anything, I'm just saying he wasn't exactly a masterful tecnician in the ring...he was just a strong brute...what's wrong with that?
I still feel like Simmons should have been a wrestling icon. There is something about him that I've always liked. Unique and very good mic style, hard worker, and a damn good wrestler. He should have been huge.
I have watched Flair since the late 70's. If he's anything, he's not overrated. The 16 World Championships (and all of the other titles), the promos, the wrestling skills, the mic skills, the selling (ok, a lot of overselling sometimes), the thousand dollar robes, the leer jet, the limos, the women, the horsemen, the 30 and 60 minute battles with Sting. Hogan was overrated, not Flair!
One of the greatest days in wrestling history... I saw the whole entire match on the WCW Saturday morning program. All of the faces came out and congratulated him in the end. WIndham, Rhodes... awesome. What a great wrestler!
@patsman191 no he wasn't. Bobo Brazil won the JWA International heavyweight Title (which was recogised by the NWA and the biggst promotion in Japan, the JWA, as a world title) in 1965 in Yokohama Japan and held it for 3-day before loosing it back to Giant Shohei Baba.
And notice that black guy in the front row. Fucking nuts. This was a great mement and kudos to WCW for this. Still, as a wrestler Booker T >>> Simmons although he owes everything to him.
Before Simmons had challenged Lugar for the title and at the contract signing Lugar incited Simmons by saying he'd make a good limo driver. Great moment here. And to comment on the earlier comments about Chavo, yeah, he's so screwed over in WWE it's nuts. At least he was ECW champ for a while. He would have been awesome in the old, REAL ECW given the chance.
It made no sence to put the belt on Simmons at this point. Vader was so over and destroying everybody. Simmons was just another mid-carder. The only reason the crowd popped like that was because Vader was such a great heel. That reaction was made by Vader not Simmons,
I believe I read that Vader was going to take some time off for knee surgery, or something like that. That's why he dropped the belt.
I agree100% otherwise though. Vader is the sole reason why this moment was big. Simmons was the first black world champ in wrestling history BECAUSE of Vader.
Big Van Vader, champion of racial equality. MLK, Harriet Tubman, BIg Van Vader, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X.
In that order. People most important to the civil rights movement.
@DingusStudley Actually Simmons was the first black world champ in wrestling because of WCW's creative team. Remember, they could've easily just put the belt back on Sting, or any number of other guys
@DingusStudley smh...so ignorant and rude of you to say. Black Pioneers and Activist are not to be taken lightly Big Van Vader didn't risk his life or well being like all of the other individuals you listed
Have you seen how Vader wrestles? The man does moonsaults at 500 pounds. If that's not putting your life at risk, I don't know what is.
FACT, Vader single handely broke down the racial barrier in professional wrestling. The black pioneers and activists you're referring to would embrace him as one of their own, for sure.
@QuotetheRaven1 You are a retard to say such stupid shit like that. I remember watching this, Simmons was very loved by WCW fans especially in that Southern region. His College Football fame had plenty to do with it but also he was a charasmtic guy people respected. Also he had a major push before but did not win the title from Luger. What was shocking here is that it came out of nowhere since Sting was hurt by Jake Roberts that nite n Simmons got the shot from picking his name off a hat.
@taekwon3000 People can say what they want about the south being racist, but I know watching WCW, that southern fans loved them some Ron Simmons and Booker T. Now can you dig that sucka?!!
