Anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the complete dave weckl solo on this video? its cut off at the end.. I'm transcribing it for my uni dissertation..
Very young at this time. At this particular time they were very tight. If you listen to this same tune performed years later, you'll hear how the arrangement has changed. It seems that they also play it a bit slower. This version is cook'n. Chic will always be the best !!!!
If any one wants to know how to get this lead synth sound, i contacted chick corea himself about it and it is a TX816 layering the sounds from banks 2, 3, 4, and 5 taken from preset #20 over sounds from banks 2, 3, 7, and 8 taken from preset #6 on the TX816
@ProMediaCompany Right. Has anyone any clue what lick Dave is playing at 7:47? its like death metal speed and so much power so its impossible to hear what drum is played first/when?! the rhythm sounds like 4 semiquavers followed by 2 quavers (if you count it at the official 300+bpm)
On the other hand, the guitar part is a little mediocre, although the guy is good, I am sure. Chick blows everyone away with his little KX5, and obviously Weckle and Pattituchi smoke too, but is it me, or can't the guitar player keep up with the bunch?
as long as we are talking about basses.... you guys are right the tone of the Ken smith is better (by that I mean more original) than the Yamaha... the KS has a nice growl to it, very tasty.
Does anyone have a transcription of the two UNISON INTERLUDES between the drum-breaks (8:17 & 8:41) ??
Note, the arrangement restates the 'Head' after Chicks solo (once in unison) but this does not occur again elsewhere (between solos) !!! Interesting ?? !!
i transcribed the arrangement off the CCEB cd of the early 1980s. The UNISION INTERLUDE (between drum-breaks) is one of the most difficult things i have ever tried to notate (because its so FAST, and theres a classic moment where Chick turns the beat around for a split second) !!
@freekazoid8489 im a drummer but im pretty sure its at 3:45 when he plays one note, goes to a higher note, then goes back to the first note... then he does it again.
@radiomix Wow! Thanks for pointing that out. I think you're right. There are probably tons of little comments in their solos that totally go over my head.
@radiomix At 6:06 Scott let's J.P. know that the reference didn't go unnoticed. I also think J.P. was complimenting Chick's artistry when he played that. "Dude, you're the Coltrane of the keys!"
when I saw these guys live in ann arbor in the 80's right after the album came out, I immediately broke up with my girlfriend that night afterwards(she went to the show as well) and started practicing my horn. it totally blew my mind the precision, intensity and realization of ensemble it took to get to this point. chick was amazing, pati, weckle, the trio only was like a large group. weckle's electronics board was huge, the whole show wore me out. nothing will compare...ever.
What makes this Patitucci bass solo so incredible is that he's got this amazing ability to think across multiple bar lines at once. Most musicians who are put in the position of improvising over changes going by this fast (especially bass players), concentrate on each bar line, digging into each chord change. Patitucci's ideas seem to cover 4-8 measures at a time, and he never loses his place, and always knows exactly where he is in the form at any given time.
Really this ability is what separates the great players from the rest, for any instrument. The soloist creates a situation in which s/he is autonomous yet related to the environment the chords create, and creates the effect of seeming to generate that atmosphere around his/her lines. Most of us are still trying to play to changes, and rubbernecking them.
I'm lucky enough to have recorded this entire concert off of the BRAVO channel many years ago. Chick, Pattitucci, Dave Weckl, and Scott Henderson (check out "Tribal Tech"). Frank Gambale replaced Henderson when I saw the band live in Boulder, CO. Absolutely -- almost excruciatingly -- good. They were SO good, that it almost made you want to explode! I kid you not...
my dad saw them quite a while ago (before I was born, I'm 15) and apparrently john broke a string on a four or 5 string bass and was completely unphased. all of them are completely amazing.
All of these guys are absolutely amazing and to discredit any one of them by labeling them as a sideman is just offensive. What do you think that Chick would say. I am a guitarist as well.
That is none other than Scott Henderson, when he was with the Elektric Band, before Frank Gambale joined them...both versions of the Elektric band were awesome, too much talent.
Incredible. That solo from Patitucci is amazing. In those times he was not using his signature bass from Yamaha, the TRB6JP, but that Ken Smith bass sounds great and plays like butter!!! Greetings from argentina.
I just tire counting this song at the correct 300+bpm!... planning on actually playing it on drums at some point in the near future :/
