I was looking to see if Steve Albini had any opinions regarding '4-Track Demos' and found this response from PJ: "4-Track Demos... was partly encouraged by Steve Albini. He loved the demos for that album so much he thought they should be out there and I tended to agree with him."
One can only wonder why the arrangement of this particular track was weakened on 'Rid of Me'.
Not JUST this particular track but several others, one can ONLY wonder? I just bought myself a new copy of the cd, and as much as I adore it, it is perplexing.....
Wish she would come to play live here again, it's been SO damn long!
@borbetomagus I think it is Albini's philosophy... You know a vocal usually gets more attention than other band memebers because people care about who 'sings' that song, not who 'plays' that song, right? I think Albini wants to respect instrumentalists by giving as much as significance as singers.. And given that Albini encourgaed 4-track demos, it shows that he did compromise his view in a very wise way.
@Teddy2M I was just disappointed that Albini didn't let the 'performance' (even if it was just a demo) be the star. (Even Bruce Springsteen ultimately decided this with "Nebraska".) Seeing Albini produced one of her favorite albums: The Pixies 'Surfer Rosa', I guess PJ had the final say for the final album and trusted him. I can only wonder if Albini would somehow emasculate any of Masonna's Alchemy recordings if he were producing (or engineering them), despite his fondness for noise.
It's a crime this raw version wasn't included on 'Rid of Me' - even with the metronome. (What was Steve Albini thinking?) At least it came out on '4-Track Demos'.
Check out my cover of this song

@Teddy2M Maybe if she had Keiji Haino produce it maybe I'd be more satisfied with the results.

Nice chameleon-like visuals.

I agree. But maybe Albini thought it would be better to go for a more "normal" sound.
