LOL! Both dogs and cats do that. And dogs will sometimes even yelp softly as they dream. They're probably dreaming about chasing squirrels or cats. :-)
Cute dogs REM, mine used to do that as well(shes gone :(), one time i it was the middle of the night and next thing you know she barking out of control and loudly, me and my parents were wide awake and she looked like she as if nothing happend. then i saw it again durring the day and it was freaky as hell! she was actually running away from something or someone in her sleep.
Hi dear, I got a black Lab of 20 months and he does the same sometimes while sleeping. A sharp short bark, rapid shaking of paws and the body overall, snout movement. I am just concerned lest it be some type of epilepsy. My vet says if the dog responds quickly to me when in this state then its fine and he does. But still I am concerned. Can u tell a bit more? My dog hasn't mated yet but has a strong urge. Cud this urge be causing a build up inside esp when he is asleep?
My little puppy(well she's 2 years old but acts like a puppy) does that and she's not a lab. It does look they're seizing doesn't it? Sometimes I have to call her name just to keep me a little more content. It looks a bit abnormal to have all those twitches but it's perfectly fine. If your dog hasn't mated yet, you might have to go get him a very good friend if he's urging(as in humping everything). Though I've heard that some black labs just normally have that very strong urge.
Well, technically that's not REM. At least in humans there is no body movement during REM because our brain shuts down the production of neurotransmitters which would make possible muscle activity to happen.
my dog wakes up at every little minute..i feel bad, like hes not sleeping. help.

My Black Lab usually does this in his sleep. Twitching of the paws, eye lids moving at a rapid pace and some yelping from time to time as well.

buceephilis this is REM and it's exactly the same for the human. Durind REM the eyes move really fast and the muscles shake just like this.

I miss my doggie :( he used to do the exact same thing

yes it is. the fact that they twitch a bit doesnt mean anything. they are still 99% paralyzed. they are dreaming, and thus, are in REM sleep.
