i have a 6 in chunk of a '66 GTO Lt rear 1/4 wheelhouse flare. it's an inch and a half of putty/filler/kitty hair. it has a perfect impression of the rot is was smeared over. i keep it in my box at work, labled..
Especially bad when used in the water bondo is hydro-phillic. Never use it on boat hulls or anything that is going to be submerged in water especially salt water. Even on cars it must be sealed on both sides to prevent further damage. I actually love bondo but only for cars and motorcycles.
@TheGypsyhustler I believe its mostley classic cars or cars that will be around over 40 years,I'm pretty sure after time it will break down and deteriorate,Kinda like if you had a styrophone cup for 40 years after time it will just disinigrate.
If bondo is not the issue to fix cars, than what is?? 90% of cars are fixed with bondo. Do people really think is cheap to weld a whole new piece to the existing one and expect not to pay much. I don't get it. I do understand if a something is made out of fiberglass than the correct way is to fix it with the same. But how about cars that are not made from fiberglass?
since this is a jet ski, not a car, bondo wasnt the right choice. If we were talking about a car - thats a different story. and , fyi, even when you weld on a panel - how do you think the seams are covered on the exterior - with bondo. so , in fact, you could end up with more bondo on a replaced panel , depending on the dent. unless of course lead is used instead - then you are talking about even more money yet,,never mind how hard pressed you'd be to find anyone else who uses lead these days!
When we shave door handles, drip rails & mold kits onto the car we only use marglass. Fiberall is even better. Basically bondo with fiberglass. Bondo cracks, try cracking marglass or fiberall. Better bring ur lunch
The point is Bondo for cars absorbed's water and expands. Use an epoxy base like MarineTex or BondoMarine grade. Otherwise you get what shizzle posted below
@happymark1805 everything has its purpose. Bondo is a brand. Body filler is a very useful tool. The most expensive body shops skin a car with body filler in order to get the body lines just right. This is an accepted practice and if you want your car nice after an accident and its not a front clip issue that gets replaced scrap the car if body filler is an absolute no or get an old lead filler expert (good luck nowadays) and pay a mint. Don't get me wrong i think leading is a lost art tho.
@tazdevilman1 - yes on a car lead is the way to go for a high quality repair, they still do that on expensive cars like rolls royce, but you can use bondo on a car if the body is metal and if it is welded or dented out, the boat flexes too much and gives no strenght, the people who did it probebly thought that is was an easy fix and sell it.
@happymark1805 didn't disagree my point was body filler (i don't use bondo i buy from body shop supply stores) is very strong. As you pointed out no flex (and won't really stick to plastic incidentally) but lots of strength. There are marine grade fillers tho i don't know how good they are.
its amazing how poeple with older ragged cars will nit pick and hawkeye the finished product and those that have newer cars hardly give them a second glance

@TheGypsyhustler
bondo is fine , for the applications it is designed for. since it is pourous, not recommended on water craft!

It's hard to tell, but it's probably a cutoff disc or some type of grinding stone.

gee how stupid and dangerous, bondo has no strength at all even a 4 year old knows that, luckely there are people who know how to properly repair it.

SeaSprayAuto - I am *not* a mechanic, but am mechanical and am a experienced sailor and waterman...
How can someone be so stupid?
1. If you put a bunch of heavy bondo on one side of your ski/boat/watercraft it is going to be UNBALANCED.
Aside from that, isn't fibreglass and epoxy the way you repair hulls? That what I do with my dinghie - Am I totally wrong?
ProductionDesignrMAX 4 years ago
you are correct !!- not only does bondo weigh ,but its not designed to be used IN the water.
seasprayauto 4 years ago
Oh shit I just figured it out...
People bondo vehicles like that to SELL 'em. I had never even thought of that before.
