  • The "mines" that the big spaceship leaves behind must be eggs since they birth the aliens you have to shoot to survive.I think we were all decieved :O

  • Did you know that there is a glitch that makes it so that you cannot get past level 13? Anyone that wrote a complaint letter like "argh wyh wai cnt i get past lvl 13 bro?" Would get a free copy of Mine Storm 2. (Which is actually just a fixed version of MineStorm) Very few people ever did, so this makes MineStorm 2 probably the most rare game for the Vectrex

  • @thetillman45 Thank you Dr. Ashens. :P

  • Does everyone spam the fire button on this game? I've always taken precise shots, to conserve space ammo, or megajoules or whatever...

  • I don't get why this couldn't have colors on its own... and filled shapes...

  • man i gotta get one of these what a chick magnet

  • Hearing that opening tune again sent nostalgia chills!!

  • f.....king awsome the lighting th e effecs oooooooooooh shiney

  • best console in the world

  • am i the only one who thought his space ship looked like a knob?

  • @paintrain996

    Yep!

  • My dad had one of these when I was a kid. Memories.

  • i got to level 32 or 33 ,how have made it know that some levels has invisibles asteroids that folows you.......is any body get there???:)

  • @didi2626 : I did back in 84 ... Nice game though !

  • not that much? The cheapest I've seen a Vectrex go for online is like $150.

  • watch complete edition associated with this specific movie here from mimb o .net remove space

  • fuck this new 3d crap i want overlays!!!!

  • thums up if you think mark would be happy if i gor a spaceship

  • I had one of these as a kid ... I remember playing Mine Storm for like 2 hours and got to like level 60 something (or thereabouts) ... then one screen had a dot that wouldn't expand so that was the end of the game. Anyway, around level 30 or so, there started to be invisible objects so if you turn up the brightness knob in the back, you could see where these objects were located at the ends of over-exposed vector lines haha. Cosmic Chasm and Scramble were great games too

  • My grandmother has one of those. It was bought second hand for the children. I love this game. She had us running around finding the other games, she hid them. (I never found them)

  • Vectrex, magnavox odyssey and Nintendo Wii are the most inovative consoles ever

  • VECTREX RULES!!!

Hey mark there is a turbo fire accesorie for the vectrex and a controller built for hyper chase (which is like a paddle) as well. the light pen has four related games and the giant 3d glasses (3d imager) has three games realesed, they had color without an overlay.

I hope this info is helpfull altough they are not very afortable, non of them.

  • I guess I'll settle for the emulator ~ :-(

  • I had the opportunity to play mine storm today at the gamescom where a retro-game-booth had a vectrex. Actually, it looks pretty cool with the sharp lines and neon-afterglow (in real life better than in videos). A shame that the vector technique didn't win over the pixel... just imagine the games we would have today if this would have been the way all vendors chose!

  • Awww, the first birth pains of video games, where would we be today without you.

    !!!FUN FACT!!!

The designer and creator of The Vectrex, Tommy Nelson, wanted to go with the name "PenisStorm". The theme being, get as many eggs pregnant as possible, but quickly abort them when they multiply! ... But sadly, they just felt the game "wasn't family friendly" enough to be released under this title. Hence the name: "MineStorm"

  • I just finished playing Armor..Attack on my Vectrex. Unfortuatly, out of the... 14(?) games I have for it, I only have the overlay for three. (Minestorm, Armor..Attack, Berzerk). I love the Vectrex.

  • this was my first video game i played back in 1987. before this? game and watch handhelds by nintendo although i would not call them video games customarily

  • my young years, so cooool

  • the ship looks like a ummmm part of the male anatomy O_o but iv played this game and its awsome :D

  • oh Lord!!!

    These were awesome!!

  • Miss having this. Going to hunt it on Ebay

  • a little asteroids

  • Vectrex and the atari 2600, best two systems on the planet...

  • I've still got my Vectrex. I got it in 1982 when i was 12 and my kids play with it now :) I reckon, i got the worlds highest score on Minestorm. I once scored over 900,000 LOL

  • @toose70 - You certainly didn't get the world's highest score on Vectrex - a number of years back I managed to get to screen 156 having 'clocked' the game's score readout 3 times. It took around 4 hours of constant playing as there's no pause button. Mental exhaustion was a major factor in not going further. Anyone else done better than that?

  • This must be an ancestor of GeometryWars!

  • @stinger3420 This is BETTER than Geometry Wars. Hell, I've played it on the DS, which is honestly the most fun. The other versions have more features, but, well, jut aren't as neat. But this, I wanna paly this game NOW!

  • Did it also have Star Castle?

  • amazing!

  • on your website you kept calling the game mine story

  • Yes if they make ports for the PS3 or 360 Vectrex games they should give the game with an overlay for your wide screen TV and I'm not kidding I want my overlay to play the games old school, on an LCD.

  • Comment removed

  • that would be like playing super mario bros with a master system controller on the intellivision....with that atari attachment

  • That sounds awesome.

I wanna do that right now!

  • haha

  • Comment removed

  • Can newer consoles do REAL Vector graphics?

Most newer "Vector graphics" games are just simulating them with polygon graphics like with Tempest 2000.

And how old school could you be?

You would playing PORTS on a PS3 or 360 on an LCD!

I'm sorry, I'm just kinda kiddin with ya, I'm just kind of a purist and will in almost every case not take emulation for an answer.

  • Seriously now I've been a gamer since 1998 and played my first games on a Terminator, NES clone, on a black and white cathode TV screen, so that's pretty old school and the most cool thing about the Terminator is that it wasn't region coded or the cartridges weren't because I played US and Japanese games like Kage( still have them).

  • geometry wars is like this

  • "The fourth button just calls for help...but no one answers."

    ^_^

  • \/e(tr@x iz teh culnes! haxxor~!

  • I've been playing this game for over 20-something years. Unfortunately, there is no Mine Field 14. If you're able to get past MF 13, you'll skip to MF 15 and must shoot dots and other mines. Sometimes, the game might end after MF 13. Afterward, more weird-shaped and dotted mines, extra lives and more Mine Field skipping. The score will go crazy if you go over a million points. My brother and I were able to make it in the early 30s Mine Fields.

    Fun times.

  • Minestorms definantly more challenging then its look alike asteroids, and as for that minestorm level 13 glitch... i was playing minestorm and i been getting better and better, i got to level 14. it didnt glitch out or anything - would love to see a video of it glitching out.

great video by the way, good review

  • You should review SBCG4AP for Wii avalable through WiiWare (Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People)

  • Really nice dude, i love your reviews, keep been nice =)

  • I like the way the enemy explodes when you shoot it. It's kinda like fireworks in space, or in a MINE STORM perhaps.

  • "dont forget the overlays" lol.

what if you have like a 42 inch tv how would that work with the overlays.

  • due the system is the tv lol

  • Comment removed

  • ummm.... bigger overlays.

  • You cant hook it up to a TV.

  • HAHAHHAHA

  • hmm, I wonder where they got the idea for this game from? lol.

  • Vetrex has a blue light neon graphics? That would be cool if there was a remake of vetrex, but a controller where you connect to a tv(those cheapo controllers with 10 video games or something you find in the handheld section in walmart or something.) And add new colors to it. Like neon green, red, and pink. Besides the plain blue color. That would be cool. It will be like Geometry Wars graphics. I can just imagine it now...

  • so amazing... and I'll say it again how can you go wrong with a game system that has trex in its name :D

  • AWESOME! Man I missed the review you did for the Vectrex so I will go watch that right now. Way awesome video.

  • Minestorm freezes on level 13 apparantly

  • @MrBobza It does if your machine is old & knacked. What actually happens is the waves get harder in groups of 4 with floating mines in group 1, magnetic mines in group 2, floating mines that shoot back in group 3 & magnetic mines that shoot back in group 4. Level 6 has 2 magnetic mines, level 8 has 2 magnetic mines that shoot back. Level 12 has 3 magnetic mines that shoot back. Level 16 is the hardest with 4 magnetic mines that shoot back.

  • Love your videos new and old.

  • Cool review. Thanks!

  • I was so close to buying one, then it got picked up... and out of humiliation, my used game store got a load of Vectrex games

  • this is awesome!

  • A very well made review of the first Vectrex game! Enjoyed it!

  • Wow,this is better than Xbox 360!

  • It is

  • well of course it's better then the 360... it's still working after 5 years... unlike most 360's.

  • @VladimirVLD anything is better than the xbox 360 lol

  • That game looks really bad ass, I love those vector graphics, they look so bright and vivid.

  • Hope there are some Vectrex hardware

nerds who can give the technical detail

    of the machine.

The system was amazing when I saw it

    as a ten year old.

  • 1:15 Westinghouse made you an AC fanboy. Haha

  • the only time i ever saw a vectrex it was $200, so that actually isn't very cheap

  • Wher did you see a Vectrix for $200.I can only find one for$300-$400

  • ebay. duh

I saw one for 50 bucks. But still had 2 more days.

  • 5:45 FINALLY we see your face!!! (sort of)

  • We have seen his face before lol.

  • I haven't. Which videos?

  • I cant really remember but I think it was in his unboxing of the ps3 video.

  • Not very often though.

  • You see his face a lot in previous videos, also, all games which allow Mark to design his characters, he makes to look like him...

  • you can see his face if you watch his old videos...

  • This game isn't "like Asteroids" it IS Asteroids!

Just from watching it I can tell it gets really repetitive really fast. That's the problem with old school Sisyphus style games. They have to be really good to not grow old too fast.

  • Mark makes them good! (they are anyway, my opinion)

  • lol, nice review. Vectex games kick ASS!

  • VECTREX is godly! always makes me smile

  • "apparently i'm wearing a white hat" was funny =P

  • my GOSH. classic gaming eh?

  • Can you pause Vectex games?

  • Does anyone know if you can get a Vectrex's picture displayed on another TV screen through some kind of technical trickery? That would be sweetness.

  • If you had a large vector monitor it would be possible to hook up the Vectrex's deflection yoke to the second monitor's yoke. You'd need some additional electronics to convert voltages in order to make this work. It would be possible to convert the vector signal into a conventional raster signal but would require a *lot* of electronics (basically an application specific computer). It would probably be easier to just use a Vectrex emulator for this because the end result would look the same.

  • Wow. You're a clever one, indeed ^_^

  • 0kay really now what is the point of the overlay for this game

  • Yeah what happens if you dont put the overlay on?

  • it's black and white. that's all.

  • Blasphemy! No overlay means no overlay, so you don't get an overlay. Noooo!

  • nothing, it's just fancy putting it on, and the title is on it + the controls

  • Dont forget the overlay? Yeah... I would want to see a overlay for a 60+ inch TV. It would probably need 2-3 man to put it on :D.

  • And superglue, because the only thing that holds the overlay in place is the static of the ray tube.

  • Great review!!

  • nice review Mark !!!!

  • the stage at 4:30 you kicked ass mark ;D

  • I'm wearing a white hat, LOL, you said that just before i wanted to post that you do! Man, you seem really excited about this vectrex, if I get the chance, I'll definitely check it out

  • Looks like the whole machine was worth the price of admission just for that pack-in game. I remember seeing ads for those back when I was 11 or 12 and wanting to play one SOOOOOO bad. Of course, I was never even lucky enough to find a demo model in a department store I could try.

Gonna have to track down a used one sometime soon. =)

  • why do they buzz so much?

  • An improperly insulated speaker wire in close proximity to the cathode ray tube.

  • Ahhh, I figured it was something to do with that.

  • you would buzz too if you were an arcade machine thats almost 30 years old

  • I think we all buzz at one time or another. It's like chicken pox: best to get it out of the way.

  • The dentist office that I go to has one of these things. I'll have to buy it sometime, sure is fun to play!

  • someone should have a Vectrex

arcade stick mod or better yet

turnd in to an arcade cabinet

  • indeed, if you played this in the day it did feel like the arcade. i didnt have one but a freind did and of course was sick of it so id have it all to my broke ass self when id sleep over in 3rd grade, lol

  • i love Geometry wars! This game reminds me a lot of it!

  • Amazing, I gotta go find one now ;D

  • you know Adobe Illustrator used vecotr graphics too. great for resizing because you don't lose quality when you zoom way in or out or when you blow images up to larger sizes

  • This guy likes saying "Vectrex" alot.

  • Everyone does. Vectrex = Win

  • cause its the best word ever

  • If anyone wonders why the Vectrex has it's own screen, TV signals are (loosely) pixel based and to do genuine vector graphics the computer needs to control the cathode ray gun to draw lines instead of scannling left-to-right, top-to-bottom like a TV. A lot of early computers and computer games used vector displays (by early I mean 60s).

  • haha awesome that looks like so much fun. I want a Vectrex now! The graphics are really crisp too.

I liked Mark's reflection in the video at the end.

  • Cool game!

  • lol "I'm apparently wearing a white hat"

  • I have a Vectrex and a few games, but no overlays. I also need a new controller for it, but the one I have works okay. It a great system. I hear there are some hobbyists still making games for it. The Vectrex is probably my favorite 'portable' game system.

  • i watch all of marks reviews in vecter graphics the wiimote rocks in glowing lines! i am serious

  • The Vectrex is fucking BA.

  • I'm buying one of these someday. Looks freaking awesome.

  • Looks like this video (maybe?) has spawn a run on Vectrex units on eBay. they seem to be going for like 100 clams plus. Yowza :)

  • 5:05

    close one!

  • cheap? i seen this for $200 at a game store here. to me that is not really cheap now.

  • Did you look on ebay? Cause I was just looking at a vectrex with 11 games for only $60.

  • dang. i really didn't look because wasn't really looking to get one and i don't like to buy stuff online. i don't even have paypal now.

  • digging the hat mark

  • I played this kind of game on PC and I gotta say , It's hard ..

  • I have one of these, and they really are that good.

  • LMAO! xDDD "The fourth button calls for help.. but no one answers..." xDDD

  • lol, the overlay would have to be really big to fit my 50 inch plasma!

  • The vectrex has no video output. It has a built in screen.

  • i know... i was just replying to the last thing the guy said in the video.. to put vectrex games on ps3 and 360 "just don't forget the overlay" lol

  • cant wigh for the berserk review

  • I bet Star Wars Arcade could run on the vectrex if someone tried to make it.

  • This should be the next console that you upgrade to S-Video like the Genesis.

  • You can't "upgrade it" to s-video because it's a vector monitor. It draws objects as individual lines rather than pixels in a raster field like conventional CRT monitors.

  • I think my sarcasm went undetected.

  • the atari 2600 couldnt handle hyper space, but it could go plaid...

  • man... that game pawns asteroids!!!

  • I'm so getting a Vectrex!

  • i like how when u shoot, it comes out of the other side of the screen, thats a sighn of good programing...

  • 1:35 In space.... no one can hear you scream!

  • Great game!

  • your sacred 2 review is what made me buy it yesterday.... AND im lvoin every gory killing second of it!

  • Stop saying First people and great review the overlay is so retro =]

  • the vectrex looks SO COOL.

You should do a review of cave story (even though it's an indie game)

  • but it's an awesome game =P and has been ported to a lot of systems, like the PSP for instance ^^
