  • Seems like your company either has no place for interns or you are seriously mismanaging them.

  • @TheGtatters All I was saying in this video is that most of the tech companies I deal with don't have much interest in interns because they use up a lot of resources, and many interns believe since they are "free" or cheap that they do not take the position seriously. I just want to make sure that people going for internships take it seriously so that they actually get something out of it. Because the more business owners have bad experiences the less they are to bother with internships at all

  • But not generous enough to pay a salary?

  • @psanf2 If we have enough to pay someone we'll just hire an actual tech. Even before the recession you could get a field tech experienced in Active Directory for $15 an hour, and a standard in store tech for $10... With the down turn most companies I know stopped accepting interns all together...

  • @elithecomputerguy Is this really a sustainable business model though? In my experience, part of the whole idea behind internships is that you can employ people at a low-commitment level who you would want to bring on full-time, and in the process train them so they can eventually become an asset. If you end up using time and resources with unpaid interns, how much more is $8/hr? Most people work harder when they're getting more than just experience out of it. Or at least I would.

  • @cachaa Interns are not part of the business model... Generally interns are brought on as a good will gesture by the tech company. Basically we all know we got to where we are because people gave us a helping hand, and so we're paying it forward as such. By bringing interns into the tech environment they can see how tech works in the "real world" and make sure that their training and career choices actually match with what employers need. $8 is real money...

  • @cachaa When you add in the additional taxes that employees don't see, workmans comp, payroll expenses and such $8 and hour easily goes over $10 an hour AND you add in the cost of basically managing someone that is not adding to your bottom line. So as a business owner interns really are a poor idea. Do you want to shell out $100-$400 a week just to "be a nice guy"? If so I have a pile of resumes people have submitted I'll forward you way ;)

  • real talk! I love how u give great first hand accounts of your attempts with different ventures and methods. Thanks homie.

  • This is a very good video to watch, not just for interns, but for all employees, to understand that in a business everyones time is costly, especially the bosses'.

How do you hire your interns? As you said, their motivation for not working proper is because they feel they are free. Paying them will help remove this mentality.

How do you instruct them? If you keep them around all day (8h)(maybe you must?) to do a 2h job, the work will likely take 8h.
