  • @ejpseudo One more thing. The extension is on the down bow. The contraction is the up bow.

  • That's okay about the thumb flattening on the extension. Mine does too. Working the bow back and forth is the key skill.

  • @Grassapelli Wonderful explanation! I have a question however. When I do this motion my thumb flattens when I extend my fingers (a.k.a. the motion during an upbow). Now is that okay...? I always thought that the thumb must be bent at all times.

Please help, I don't want to develop this technique incorrectly!

  • Excellent! I'm going to start working on it now.

  • I have wrangled with this for a year now

  • @jmbrunson34 How is it going? Are you simply not getting the results you want? Just today I was working with and coaching a beginning student on this very issue. If you are not getting it, you need to get a teacher who can help you.

  • @Grassapelli trying to learn to play fast; it is counterintuitive to me - should take more effort to play faster but the key is in relaxing... my teacher is working on unlocking the right wrist and speeding up.

  • I'm a beginner and I have developed pain in my left wrist. Is there anything you can recommend for a loose left wrist or proper positioning of the left hand/wrist? I feel this especially when reaching for the G and D strings.

  • @s2macdon Best is to get some specific massage on the muscles involved. Next best is to work the muscles yourself. Be sure to work around the elbow where the other end of the muscle is. You will find some sore spots you didn't know were there!

  • I have been looking for ways to improve my bowng...after playing for 30+ years, I still can't get my bowing to keep up with my fingering...maybe this will help!

  • @momofgr8kids I believe it will help. Be patient, it's a new skill and a subtle one.

  • @momofgr8kids you should check out Bonnie Bewick's video on Bowing too

  • Great tip,Elan. I have never had anyone give an exercise example like that before.

  • Thanks!!!!
