I like this interpretation so much. Without forgetting that this is a "mazurka", Michelangeli is able to embed it in a mood which sounds mostly "nostalgic". I mean"nostalgy" as richness of meaning. I cannot refrain myself from thinking that Michelangely tried to interpret an European-versus strictly Polish will of the composer writing from France, with suggestions coming from South border with Spain. In particular, in the principal b-min theme, I hear echos of Spanish-Mediterranean music,
@4gnos il problema è che siamo in un era in cui se non si esternano le cose con i fuochi d'artificio, la gente non capisce... Guarda i vari dudamel mateusz e harding, si dimenano come dei matti e ottengono un unghia di uno sguardo di Ormandy
For this particulair mazurka I totally appreciate this interpretation, It's the one that is the most similar to the way I interpret this piece. Thanks for uploading, I think it
@dexterityhunter. Do I hear some sarcasm here :-D (that comment was from me under previous name), of course I mean with that comment that I like and second the style he plays it in (the tempo, the dynamics etc). Not comparing the quality of performance ;-) I really like it to hear someone professional interpreting a piece the way I would love to hear it :-) Most other pianists make this piece a bit less emotive and more lighthearted (especially on the majeur parts).
Oh..when will people stop convincing others that their own taste is the right one?If they'd stop tending to persuade others in taking up their own opinions and so to equalize all tastes, they'd also realize that without diversity(that makes us have different views on things) there would be nor Rubinstein, nor Michelangeli, Cortot, Rachmaninoff nor anybody else...
@stefannestoroski I am not trying to persuade anyone. everyone has a right to their opinion. Thats what the comment option is for, is it not? It simply gives me pleasure that one might experience the beauty of his playing like i have. i didn't say anything about him being best. Rubinstein outshines ABM in Chopin no doubt. But isn't it enriching when someone finds something new they perhaps may have heard. its reciprocal. I have learned much from others as well. Best Wishes, Brian
@brianCIM Hello Brian. Thanks for writing me but I of course wasn't replying to one of your posts when I wrote my comment, so I don't see what's made you feel as if I was directly and unmistakably blaming you of intolerance.I haven't gone through the history of your posts now,so I can't say if I agree or not.Of course, Youtube comments are for making comments and for giving opinions...Furthermore, it has been teaching us how to be tolerant in exposing our ideas, to say who we are without
offending anyone else.Like I said,I don't know if you have or haven't(by what you wrote me it appears to me that you haven't), but I must say that I always avoid phrases like "Rubinstein outshines ABM in Chopin no doubt." I'd rather say...
"In my opinion Rubinstein outshines ABM in Chopin'".Also because I have realized that in Art, in Music,in Poetry...there is no "Better",but only different. Michelangeli's approach to Chopin is different than Rubinstein's,Cortot's ecc. That' all.
I didn´t want to insult somebody - but with Chopin I prefer Cortot, Horowitz and Friedmann for example and I like Uchidas and Richters Debussy much more than Michelangeli who is without a question a great pianist.
I´m not kidding now: I think the secret of Rubinstein is the choice of a good Steinway - he plays quite boring (I listened to Ravels Piano Trio yesterday - no magic touch at all) - the same about his Chopin - boring (sorry - in my taste)
What are you saying? But also Horowitz playied on a Steinway and Sons and then?Rubinstein put his heart playing Chopin, surely more than A.B.Michelangeli,this is true.
@hein2214 uh if you find his Chaccone, Gaspard de la nuit, Ravel concerto, Rach #4 Concerto, brahms-paganini variations.......boring something is wrong. And this is coming from(myself) someone who believes Rubinstein may have been the greatest all-around pianist of the 20th century. ABM's tone cold? that is recycled stuff that people throw around all the time. ABM had one of the widest color palettes of any pianist in the 20th Century. listen to the 2nd movement of the Ravel Concerto please.
hein, just listen to his Bach-Busoni Chaconne. you've never heard pianism like that in your life. please permit me to send it to you. it will blow your mind. for the record i must say when horowitz was interviewed by harold schonberg for his biography his comments about great pianists were devastating. the only 2 pianists who said kind things about were michelangeli and richter.
That`s really absolutely great. I wanted to say that I don´t prefer Michelangelis Chopin and Debussy playing. But I like his special early Mozart recordings very very much. Thanks for your comment also.
Thank you for posting, killmazeppa. Of course ABM's performance is absolutely flawless, it's spacious, open granite, but consequently a bit frosty for my taste. What I miss in him is warmheartedness.
Well, Ellinidara, for your information, I co-ran a piano magazine for five years and was one of its editors for 16 years. I exclusively interviewed pianists such as Bella Davidovich, Emanuel Ax, Jeremy Menuhin, Cyprien Katsaris and Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and they thought me not too stupid. I may not be an expert, but I feel music in my own way. And I may admire ABM, but he leaves me cold.
I didn't mean you're stupid...I never permitted to myself to offend or express those comments conversing with someone..I simply think this pianist was incredible and unic,so I didn't agree with you.
THE BEST! THE PERFECT! BRAVO MICHELANGELI!

I agree with you, MadameMusica. The choice of (slow) tempo is extraordinary (given one is able to manage it, but ABM is).

This comment has received too many negative votes show
He has no "parfum" in his fingers, what is missing to reach Cortot or Horowitz. Ican´t understand why he is such a legend of pianoplaying.
