We are to submit ourselves to God alone, and never to 'the saints' as Shalhoub claims: this is a tradition of man, which is most certainly not found in the Word of God.
Shalhoub is right in saying the sign of the cross is the landmark of the Orthodox church (similarly it is also the case in Catholicism) – it is a tradition of man only, and was not taught by the Lord Jesus or instructed in any way whatsoever by the Word of God.
@RUKEAL Orthodox Christians do not 'submit' ourselves to the saints. We venerate the saints and ask them to intercede for us to Christ. The tradition of the Church comes from the holy fathers and apostles (who knew Jesus). Please do some research about these things. You might lean something helpful.
@RUKEAL – The saints are in many instances figures who were originally taken from pagan pantheons and renamed by the early Roman Church. Others who were later canonised were (and still are) deemed as such by men on earth and not by the Lord. By venerating these 'saints' and asking them to intercede for you to Christ, you go against the teachings of the Word of God which clearly states it is the Lord only who serves to mediate between God and men.
When you realize we pray to Mary or the saints asking for their intercession, we ask that act as a mediator in the sense of an advocate.
NOT in the same sense as Jesus: The one and only mediator to reconcile mankind's trespasses against God - no Catholic or Orthodox would presume that any saint could fulfill THAT kind of mediator role.
Please don't forget to answer my question about your take on Rev 5:8-9. Thanks
As I think about it more, I believe a much better example of a mediator in the advocating or intercessory role would be when Mary went to Jesus asking Him to help out with the wine situation in John 2.
You might consider our prayers to Mary a request in manner similar to that.
Remember too there are 3 forms of prayer:
1) Thanks giving
2) Worship
3) Request
We pray to Mary usually in relation to the 3rd manner of prayer; never the 2nd, which is reserved for the Trinity alone.
@182RG - The 'saints' of Rev 5:8-9 are the true saints of the Lord. It is doubtful that many of these feature on the list of so-called canonized figures of the Roman Catholic Church, a prime example being St Christopher, the patron saint of travelers – this concept was borrowed wholesale from the pagan Hermes - guardian of travelers, who is linked to the Egyptian Thoth...one of many such examples which are simply traditions of man.
While the NLT is often untrustworthy, I agree with your point.
@RUKEAL <<<this concept was borrowed wholesale from the pagan Hermes
I don't think we should consider that to invalidate anything. If we do, would we not also have to consider the atheists' claim that Jesus is a clone of Mithra or Horus?
@182RG – Indeed the opposite is true, Mithra, Horus and the many other so-called saviour gods of the ancient world were clones of Jesus. That Satan said "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds" relates to the setting up of solar worship - deceived man worshiped the sun, moon and stars as physical representations of their gods in the heavens. In setting himself up to be "like the most high", the deceiver mirrored many of the rightful aspects and titles of the Lord God himself.
@182RG – These mirrors speak to the devil masquerading as an angel of light, the Moon god across the ancient world was deceivingly worshiped as the 'son of light', 'illuminating lamp' – known as "Helel Ben-Shachar" in the Hebrew, a name for the Babylonian Moon deity (Helel: 'shining one' Helel Ben-Shachar: "morning star, son of dawn"), which is translated as "Lucifer, son of the morning" in Isaiah 14:12. The worship of this mirror deity as the divine 'son' was common across the ancient world.
@182RG – The problem with Christians today is that they refuse to delve into the very subject that is so widely testified of by the Word of God – that of the ways and gods of the ancient world. As the Lord testifies: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" – in today's world nothing had changed, except that time has served to veil the knowledge of the past. These ways proliferated the world so widely that no study of the Word is complete without earnestly taking these into account.
@182RG – Once knowledge of the concepts of the divine/sacred in the ancient world is gained, it serves to provide better understanding of such concepts related by the Word of God. It is only them that we can begin to understand the implications of the adulterous acts of Israel in the ways of the gods of their neighbours, and of Egypt, which are so widely testifies by the Word of God – and indeed gain better understanding of the state of affairs relating to that same deception in today's world.
@182RG – As to who the true saints are, I believe this is beyond our scope of knowledge, in the same way that any specific information relating to the fates of individuals after death is also hidden from us. No doubt all will be revealed on that great day!! Until then we live in faith and blessed hope!
@JMasson05 – The Word of God alone provides correct instruction with regard to the intercession you speak of:
"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" Timothy 2:9
Christ is the only one who is mediator between God and mankind – it is He alone who serves in this position. Any other doctrine in this regard is simply a 'tradition of man'.
The Kingdom of Heaven is not yet upon earth, which is why we pray "...thy Kingdom come..." – it will only come at the time of the end spoken of in Revelation. Your churches were not given to you by Jesus Christ, but made by the hands of men following the traditions of man.
"Yet the most High dwells not in temples made with hands; as says the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will you build me? says the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?" (Acts 7:49)
@angelicmeghan07 In the Eastern churches, as well as the Eastern Catholic Churches, the sign of the cross is always made from right to left. In Latin Church and Oriental Orthodox Churches, the direction is left to right. However, Catholics used to cross themselves right to left until the 12th century.
He is a part of the Orthodox Church and that is proper. The Roman Catholic Church does it - 1) Forehead / 2) Middle / 3) Left Shoulder / 4) Right Shoulder. This is one of the small differences and are also from different part of the World
@SamusVSMC People are what they make themselves and he didn't say you were evil.
Th3a5 was only pointing out that if you do it to right above the navel like the instructor did then it's right side up as opposed to if you did what he said which was to the heart because then it would be upside down.
@Th3a5 There is no need for that here. This is an instructional video for thos of the Orthodox faith. We are not evil people, and in this world it's not hard to find those that are. I suggest you take friends where you can get them and not burn too many bridges. I consider all Christians family and I hate to see us squable amongst ourselves.
I respect what you just showed father...could you tell me why the blessing cross jesus has on the icon behind you is not the same as the one you just showed?

What's your take on Rev 5:8-9?
Also, the Greek word used in 1 Tim 2 for mediator "mesitēs" has more than one meaning.
The first: An advocate - much like Bathsheba did for Adonijah in 1 Kings 2.
The second, as in 1 Tim 2: One who mediates for peace and unites parties at variance or war.
Not crazy about the NLT, but it has probably has the rendering closest to the real meaning:
"For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity--the man Christ Jesus."
