  • Poor Joe. He could barely sing. Sounds to me like he was losing his voice. I saw them live in the early 80's. He could nail that song, all the songs for that matter, no problem.

  • If deluxe cold war era audio is only coming out of the left side, your speakers are reversed. This has been a public service announcement. Rock on!

  • I love the early def leppard

  • joe nice unibrow!

  • Mutt Lange, who I consider to be a VERY GOOD record producer, produced 'High n' Dry'. It was a well done album. However, I always knew there was A LOT of doctoring going on, with the lead and back-up vocal tracks, including applying heavy reverb and doubling of tracks. This made it very difficult, to perform what was recorded, LIVE! Just my opinion.....

  • joes hottttttttt at 0:50!!!!1

  • Switch 625 would be so cool in a car race scene in some movie.

  • SUBELE EL VOLUMEN AWEONAOOOOOOOOO

  • n yeah joes I love def Leppard but that is a serious tradegy cud have done lot better singing wise n yeah joes pissed

  • His voice needed some TLC at that point. ...but he was really trying to project...all that singing can wear your voice.

  • 2:21 Beautiful

  • I love these guys..but I hate that he's "coloring" the "Bringing on" part of the chorus...too high of an octave. He should sing that part like the studio version..IMO

  • Aw, aw aw - painful.....sounds like a crap youth club band.

  • Def. Leppard. Kicks. Ass.

  • Terror twins rule!!!

  • What the hell was Joe on? He sounds like a dieing mule. Eveyone looks to be asleep. And why was Rick sweating so much? All that water flying. Steve rocks!!

  • they all had the flu and joe was dealing with laryangitis throughout much of the tour, cut them some slack, they were touring non stop to not lose the momentem they had and joe learned on this tour that his voice couldn't hold up to singing the way he sings every night so now they play 3 shows and a day or two off and his voice lasts the tour

  • I dont want to cut Joe any slack I dont like him. And I have my own opion. :) I do like his singing and I know everyone has a bad singing day. I'm just a big mouth. :) I'm sorry

  • not a problem people are entitled to their own opinion, you don't like joe and that's cool, i won't get bent out of shape and I am sure it won't keep him up at night. you don't have to apologize, you weren't being a dickhead in expressing your thoughts. it's the people who come on just critize try to start arguments that annoy me, so no worries, have a good day

  • Ok Thanks. :) You too. :) And I love DL. Steve is my fave.

  • Sublime !

    I miss you Steve :(

  • joe's voice is really horrible here...it was perfect in 1988 but his voice here is really bad...other than that, great performance

  • Steve Clark :`(

  • sublime!!

  • still the best Lep song ever

  • def leppard is awesome and this song is flippin sweetttttttttt!!

  • this song is a voice-shredder!

  • this is so good! my band covered this song if you all want to check it out

  • Does anyone remember the MTV Friday Night Video Fights when Photograph went toe-to-toe with about 18 Duran Duran songs; and kicking the hell out of Duran Duran the entire time?

  • OH MY LORD!

  • Finally, a video of Bringin' On The Heartbreak that contains Switch 625!! I've never really enjoyed hearing BOTH on the radio when they don't include Switch 625 as it was on the album. Thanks for a great post!

  • i want the phils ibanez so bad how much u think it costs

  • i want ti too ! :P it used to be on ebay for about 1000 $

  • vocals sound very dry, like a board mix with no effect on it.

  • I agree.Could been a malfunction or sumthin.Joe usually sounded better than that.

  • I'm glad it's not just me. I was just sitting here thinking that this didn't sound to good. It sounds like Joe is just screaming not singing. He isn't in tune at all. Joe sounds much better than this. Something's not right with it that's for sure!

  • Even Joe can have a bad night I guess...

  • But his true fans all know that Joe can REALLY sing...just probably had a bad night, or was coming down with something...that's my take.

  • I totally agree with you!1 mabey he had a dry throat from singing to much poor baby!

  • yeah...lets massage that throat..i.e...suck on his neck! lol

  • sounds good to me! which half you want?? lol

  • I'm assuming this is the same concert that the other videos I've seen and sent on recently from 1983 are. I know Joe has on the same clothes in all of them. It's just probably because he had already sang so much and his throat probably was very dry. Hmmm. Now what could be done in a situation like that? He definitely needs something warm and soothing. Bet I could think of something if I try real hard! See he sounds horse when he talks in between the song and Switch 625. Poor dear!

  • yeah, I just wanna hug him and kiss him, hug him real tight again, kiss him, lead him to the bedroom...wait...damn, my mind's in the gutter again...lol

  • No, your mind isn't in the gutter. It's in the bedroom! I don't know if I could wait long enough to get to the bedroom. How about just inside the front door? How that would help his throat I'm not sure, but who cares??Not me!!!!LOL

  • well, think girl, think!!! All those kisses keeps his throat moist...lol...plus we might just make his mouth water...lol

  • Yeah, this is true. We definitely want to take care of his throat so we can hear him scream...I mean hear him sing,....his singing is what we're supposed to be working on right? I got lost for a minute!

  • scream, sing, moan, grunt...all comes from the same area...that sexy mouth!!!

  • And I wonder just what else he can do with that sexy mouth, and sexy hands and sexy... wait a minute. I'm getting lost again....bad Angel, bad!!

  • Really bad Angel!!!! So good to be bad, am I right?....lol...that voice...ugh!!

  • Yes, being really bad is so much more fun! Oh the possibilities! Yeah, I love that voice hoarse or not. Doesn't matter to me. I still get goosebumps when I hear it! My oh my. What I wouldn't give for just one night. Just one!

  • I know, girl, I know!!!! Same here!!! Good to dream...lol

  • yes..everyone needs something to dream about don't they...sigh ....and such a good dream it is! A lot can happen in dreams ya know!lol

  • yup, girl!!!!

  • I have no life just like you have no taste huh? Aww mad because I dissed Joe? just like Little T disses Steve.

  • No I don't, but you sure must have right?

  • you it does no good to argue with her, she believes she knows everything about def leppard and has the inside track on what steve would think and say, and it just isn't worth your time, I just ignore her, she doesn't really have a life

  • ugh my god

Give me one quote where Joe says the MUSIC on OTTN is complete shit and he puts down the album. Joe has called the production of OTTN shit, not the music. Like you just pointed out he hates the way it SOUNDED. Two completely different things.

If you weren't such a hypocrite yourself towards Joe and read between the lines then maybe you'd get what HE was trying to say.

Oh and why would Wasted and Rocks Off be on his list of personal favorite def songs if he hated OTTN?

  • how am I hyopcrite with Joe because I think he is a jerk? He has said alot of stupid stuff all in print go look it up. I have all the proof I need I've read and heard it out of his own mouth. Go listen to your sissified Leppard will ya?

  • funny thing is Steve himself would laugh in your face for thinking Joe is an evil dictator asshole.

  • Uh and you know this how? Do you know Steve or Joe personally? You are an idiot.

  • he said, and I quote 'We consider High n Dry to be our real first album'

is that not pushing aside OTTN?

I guarantee if Joe said that, you'd be slagging the hell out of him for 'bashing' OTTN and not liking it.

  • He also said that High and Dry was what BROKE them in the states. Steve never said he didn't like it like Joe has said. Joe has said he hated the way it sounded so yeah that's why I consider Joe an asshole.

  • I have that WHOLE interview on DVD if you listen to the WHOLE thing you'll get what Steve was trying to say. I have article after article of Joe the asshole putting OTTN down and denying how great it was. You forget I have TONS of interviews with the band that proves what a hypocrite Joe has been over the years.

  • Wow...I finally know how he plays the song! Steve is like God almighty on the guitar!! Thank you so much for uploading this. YOU ROCK.

  • Steve didn't like OTTN either. There's even a video on youtube of him saying so.

  • uh he did NOT say he didn't like it he said they were kids playing in a rock band that's why it sounds the way it did. Get it right.

  • yeah he said he thought it was pretty good even though Joe didnt like it it wasnt as bad as Joe made out.

  • could steve get more gorgeous?

    I miss him.

Gosh, I'd give the world to see him again.

  • lester73, thank you! This is the only live version of "Switch 625" I have heard with Steve Clark on lead guitar. It *is* rare. One question; on the public library computer I use for YouTubing, they audio is very low, approximately one quarter of the normal volume, with both YouTube's volume up and the computer's own volume up. Why is this? Can it be re-uploaded with more sound? : )

  • oh and SMCchik, you have a SAD, SAD life.

Your little Clarky is DEAD. DEAD, and BURIED.

Also you to should do your fucking research. Leppard DO play stuff off the first two albums live still. FACT

  • Ok, he is dead. We estbablished that in 1991. K? We are aware of that. But for some people, who know good music when they hear it, like me and the other DL fans, he still lives on. And yes, you are right, they still play stuff of the first 2 albums. but, she doesn't have a sad life if she knows her shit.

  • well somoen I know went to ma concert they played 2 songs off the new album and all the rest HYSTERIA so maybe last year they did play that stuff but this year they didn't. Also Joe has said repeatedly he doesn't like OTTN.

  • Beauty you are so utterly full of shit, it's insane.

Brian May, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Slash, and the guys in Metallica would laugh you off the planet for saying that about Leppard's live stuff.

Oh and do research first ok dude? I saw Lepp live last year and they played 4 songs off of HND and Wasted off of the first album

    FUCKIN IDIOT!

They played Mirror Mirror, Switch 625, Heartbreak and Another Hit and Run off of HND when I saw them last year.

  • It's wierd because Rick still has both arms in this video!

  • I just watched some newer clips and to be honest he still cant sing the older stuff that well. The band has dropped the key on the old songs and he still has trouble with them. The new songs are sung in a much lower register so it easer for him to sing them stronger. Its not a dig on him at all. Most singers from his era struggle and drop the key. The thing with joe is he never was able to pull off live what Mutt did in the studio.

  • i wouldnt say that...everything on the In The Round video sounded pretty tight with his vocals...it was about the time Retro-Active/Slang Era where his voice went

  • Remember that the round is pro shot and released which means it was mixed and overdubbed in the studio. Thats not joes real volcals that your hearing. Mutt lang is the master of all masters inrecording vocals. Joe is just not that good. He said so him on vh1 talking about david coverdale in the studio next door blowing him away. That said hid vocals fit the songs on record and those are some of the est rock songs ever. They will always hold up.

  • I think you missed my point. The in the round show was taken into the studio and overdubbed. You are not hearing the vocals as the were live. Thats a fact not an opinion. Bands dont release footage with out mixing and recutting parts. Unless thay are purist like some punk or hardcore bands. Lep has always been a product of Mutts production in the studio so they would never release raw live sound.

  • He cant hit the notes the same like joe elliot either but listen to David Coverdales vocals as opposed to joe , no comparison.....

  • I agree Coverdale blows away Joe as a vocalist.

Sorry big take the time to look a little closer at a post.

Def Lep is the best band in the style of music they play.

What we were talking about was joe not being a great live vocalist because of the way mutt pushed him on the studio and how hard it is to reproduce those tracks on stage. Also try not to get so angry about youtube post if you dont agree. Its just someones opinion. Get angry when u get cancer or loose a limb. God bless!

  • Wow joe couldent sing this live back then either. Mutt just killed his chances of ever being a good live vocalist. The stuff is just to high and to produced . I know joe says they dont play the first 2 racords live out of respect for phil not playing on them but really its because he understandably cany sing it.

  • actually joe had leisons on his throat that had to be surgically removed that caused his voice to sound distorted, he can sing just fine now, just has to take a day off now and then on tour. As for the lack of songs from the first two albums, they have been playing some lately, joe just doesn't like his first album and as he says, he wrote it so he can say he doesn't like it if he wants.

  • uh it's not Joe's first album it's their 1st album. Also it's a slap to his 1st fans who LOVED that 1st album. I know it is to me as that was the album I heard and made me love them. Frankly I think Joe needs to shut his mouth as he has pissed off his older fans and made them NON fans. Also if you know ANYTHING about the Lepps of the past Steve WROTE MOST of their stuff no matter what Joe the hypocrite says. Steve fans know better

  • They don't play stuff off the first 2 albums because STEVE. Sorry but PHil could not play these songs well go look at the vids from past concerts. Personally I'm glad they don't play off these albums, it's bad ewnough they still play Hysteria after they sadid they were closing the door on the Clark era. Joe is a JERK plain and simple.

  • hold on, it's not like Steve was carrying Phil in the band. I mean, Phil can play. Alright, and Joe isn't a jerk. Everyone looks at it a different way.

  • First off thanks for the defense. Um I think Joe is a jerk. He has put his foot in his mouth repeadtedly over the years about their earlier stuff. Phil may be able to play but go listen to the Switch from 2003 he butchered it with his overplaying. For the record I am NOT a fan today, they lost me as a fan.

  • Phil is a bit of a hac. Watching him on the VH1 tribute thing was really hard. Steve was the hard and sole of lep. Nothing they recorded since his death is timeless. But everything he played on holds water. Phils work on the 3rd and 4th records works because its so pop but steve, That guys was all hart and feel. Just my opinion it does not mean you feel the same.

  • Thats true. Phil cant play it like Steve could. When he played, his soul practically oozed out of the guitar, so to speak lol.

  • it's so weird see rick playing with both arms xD

  • i love this...i love listening to bringing on the heartache then switch 625 without any gaps...it sounds so amazing...everytime i hear switch i get goosebumps....

  • as i remember...

  • Joe is so pretty......

  • One of the earliest live version...and AWESOME !!!

  • Clark is in the white shirt, Collen's in the black shirt with white polka dots.

  • really doesnt sound good

  • That's top of the line audio technology of 1981 for ya. My how we've changed.

  • Aw...there's so much persona in Steve's playing. I love Phil, but it ain't nothin' without Clark.

  • well... its true that Joe's voice is not the best in this clip.. however, *I believe* this was way before they came out big, and Joe must have learned how to better his vocal talent. Then again, thats just me.

How'd the band get so huge anyways? (apart from the rest of the band members) =)

  • Uhh... Dude. Are you watching this video? And if so, and you REALLY think his voice sounds good, are you DEAF?!?!

  • Good thing the audio is so low on this video, or else we'd all figure out that Joe Elliot is NOT a good singer outside of the studio with all the mechanical magic...

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    Bullshit.

    Seen 'em live?

Joe's voice is excellent live, as numerous TV appearances will attest to.

  • I like 'em. that's the thing about live music..it's not always perfect...dude.

  • anybody else have trouble with the audio?

I can't hear this video at all.

    :(

  • I can hear it but the volume is very very low put your speakers really high and you'll hear it

  • Yeah I read he had some lesions removed that was giving him that distorted sound.

  • That was amazing, thank you so much for posting this. Never thought I'd see a live performance of Switch 625 by Steve... it gave me goosebumps watching this.

  • they always sound weird live

  • Whoa..thats rough.. however... liveis always diffeerentthan studio...especially when he's been having to sing almost every night for 8-10 months straight. Its understandably rough...give the guys a break... LOL

  • Laryngitis? ya i mean thats a freakin hard song to sing and he dos a great job lol

  • I strictly enjoy this as well as only any thing pre- Pyromania!

  • Sure, Joe doesn't sound great here, but it's not easy to sing these songs one night, much less for an entire tour. Even with laryngitis he is still giving his all.

  • The length of Clark's strap remained consistant fm 1978 till 1990.

  • Yes I think some people don't realize that they were formed originally in 1977 by Pete Willis, Rick Savage and drummer Tony Kenning, Pete brought in Joe Elliot and Steve Clark..2 weeks into recording their first demo, Tony Kenning was fired and briefly replaced by Frank Noon. 15-year old Rick Allen ended up taking the drum stool permanently.1980, On Through The Night was released, and people think that is when they were formed..

  • Rick Allen joined in Early 1979 after seeing an ad in a local paper. He was about to give up on becoming a success.

Kenning, Elliot, Savage & Willis is the founding lineup.

  • Any true Lep fan can distinguish between Clark and Collen re solo's as Clark was more melodic and Collen was more punk/metal influenced.

  • Perfectly put man. I would say the new stuff is a little more melodic though yeah? I mean, A lot of their soft stuff lik 'love and hate collide'? What do you think ?

  • "Sparkled" reminds me of a Hysteria meets Euphoria blend.

Ever since Clark's death Switch has not been played live as that was his song.

  • The piece was co-written by Pete Willis and Steve Clark, and I think it sounded best with them playing co-lead, then with Phil Collen.

  • Everything I've seen has it down as Steve wrote the song himself.

  • When I find what I did with my video I will post it where Pete in an interview said he began writing the song because he wanted something on the album that would showcase Steve's playing ability, but he couldn't finish it, so he played what he had for Steve and they finished it together, he said it was amazing to him how well they clicked together as if they had written this in another life.

  • oh please! upload it!!!

  • Please find that video

That would be amazing to hear!

  • They still play it, there are videos on here of them playing it.

  • actually they have played it since then. There are videos of switch 625 being played posted here. type it in the search box and you will find it.

But no one plays it like Steve did.

  • They played switch live this tour in Syracuse. I was actually a little shocked to hear it-it seemed sacreligious or something.

But it was great to hear it again live/but weird without Steve.

  • I agree, from what I've heard, Collen's the Speed of the guitar, and Clark's the soul. That's why I like Clark more!

R.I.P. Clark(P.S.: This is proof that guitarists look way cool while smoking!)

  • one of the best and most accurate descriptions i've come across!!!

  • Collen was almost in Iron Maiden but they picked Adrian Smith. I still miss Steve Clark the man was a master at his art !!

  • oh shit in france !!!!

    incredible

  • Clarky didnt wear his guitar as low in the early days

  • god rick is an amazzzziinnngg drummer!!!! i find it hysterical that his parents had to sign the contract for him because he was only 15
