It's always bothered me how flippant and dismissive Townshend is of Keith Moon. The balance to that is how enthusiastic and appreciative Daltry is. The world will never see another Keith Moon. There is no substitute !
@jrhgswrhfg i agree.Pete sounds as if he is unimpressed w/keith. Though there were times when keith's drumming was indeed horrid, for the most part he was brilliant. He was the only drummer that i've heard play w/the band that made the "wall of sound" that was the Who. Simon Phillips, though a great drummer in his own right, never sounded right for the Who, same w/kenney jones. The Who needed a bombastic type of drummer to compliment Pete and John's playing..
it's nice to see roger daltrey had an appreciation of keith moon and how his drumming pulled them all together as a band. He certainly seemed to geniunely enjoy playing the drums you can just see the joy and excitement in his face in most of these videos what a shame he burned himself out like he did
Moon was a naturaly tatented drummer that played as a true artist...from his heart and emotions...technically talented...probably not. Musically talented...most certainly.
@dugieboy08 "technically talented-probably not." Listen carefully to the double bass drum work on "Bargain" on "Who's Next", especially at the end, and you'll hear some of the most difficult technically complex drumming of all time. To say Keith wasn't technical was only a function of his sobriety. when he was loaded, yes, he could be sloppy and imprecise. But when he was at his best, spot on the track, he was incomparable. He played with technical prowess AND emotion, his power was overwhelming
@dougalmac54 Also listen to "Live at Leeds", especially "Young Man Blues." Keith's drum virtuosity is overwhelming, and the entire record is some of the best live rock drumming ever recorded. These examples, and I could site about a dozen others, knock your "No technical prowess" argument right down in the dirt.
@dougalmac54 Keith played with an off-beat/thrashy kind of style. If he joined any other band he probably would sound like shit. He played with his left foot leading on the double bass on some parts of The Who's songs. That's why he's always intrigued me. That and he had a destructive personality. Long live rock, long live The Who
@MusicIsDeadToday hahaha moonie was the greatest of all time!, i am not insulting you, but the drummer in that dvd, and the guy from the sex pistols dont know what they are talking about
@MusicIsDeadToday haha i suppse, but i dont think that moonie woulda sounded like shit with any other band, he had an uncanny ability to channel the music through his drumming
@jaqua524 You're probably right.. But for his time, his style was way different than Ginger Bakers. He would be a great 80's hair band drummer I bet hahaha(:
@pres421 Unfortunatly, there is one now :-(, and I don't understand why. I'm a huge fan of Keith, and this one motherfucker spoiled the fun. I did once a gig with my group, and they asked the guitarplayer or I was a fan of Keith Moon, and that was the BIGGEST compliment I ever had!!!!
his not being on the rails is what makes him special to me. his energy is amazing. his character and star is way above almost everyone. you can't touch him.
If you watch different footage of Keith playing you can tell that he approached his playing as a dance. He's dancing to Pete's guitar, to the words, to the sound of Roger's voice, and to John's bass. And he's not just dancing to it, he's dancing with it.
I love and deeply respect what Roger said about how important Keiths sound was to the Who, check my videos: On Keith, 905, and, How Can You Do It Alone to see what I mean
If you can, rent or buy "The Who at Kilburn 1977". It also comes with a 2nd show from 1969 in London. It really show cases Keith Moon's drumming in concert, and where his legendary status comes from. The energy used during both of these shows is unbelievable. RIP Keith Moon!!!
@55102 ....He died in 1978, self medicating to control his battle with alcohol. The pills he took, (3 per day max is the dosage), should only be taken in treatment. He took close to 30 pills, while the 6 digested pills are what killed him.
Can someone explain to me what Roger means when he says he's playing to the vocals? I just don't see it. The drumming's really good though. Also what song is it?
@MetalSwitch95 Vocals have their own rhythm and cadence which is the reason you can hear them separate from the melody and the drums instead of being used as a baseline beat [Entwhisle takes over this], Pete accentuates the vocals providing additional emphasis for the cadence, not mimicking it...but providing mini scene for it.
you notice roger is like a little kid in the studio..... there all like that, the stones, the who... when they get in the studio they get really excited. i think thats cool, even through all the shit its still about making music for them.
Keith is one of a kind and awesome! John Bonham is no way above average at best, he is the BEST, period! Listen to him LIVE and he'll prove that fact!! Still, no one like MOON!! Both my favs...
His playing continually reacted to the song and lyrics organically, rather than providing a musical scaffold for the rest of the band to build on...apples and oranges. His technical proficiency is a moot point. I like both kinds of drummers, but Moonies kind are MUCH rarer in successful bands...RIP KEITH! A true genius, a true original...

@rockandroll4life1..........Moon wasn't a 10th of the drummer Bonham was..........solo or anything else....all of you "deaf" Moon fans should leave Bonham out of your uninformed comments
Bonham and Moon were 2 different types of drummers. John obviously was the better technical, musically structured of the two but Keith thought and played outside the box and was the better "rock star" who was more entertaining to watch and listen to in concert. Either way, they are both missed.
yeah I like Roger's comments on how integral Keith's sound was and it was, it killed me how Jones played Baba with no cymbals, I think Zak is the best fit for them so far, I think I would be better
and I know how that sounds, but f it, you can't play like Keith without confidence
I'm American, the Who could never hire me anyway, strictly a British band, give a listen to mine and let me know what you think, I can take it
Yeah i saw them in the hunter valley in Australia in February, and Ringo starr's son was drumming, and he was great but nowhere as good as moon the loon
What a great clip. Really a good description of a drummer like no other. Check out Live at Leeds track Sparks/Amazing Journey for my favorite Moon drum bit, play it ****in LOUD!
