djax4mvp, I'm surprised that this was the first year you followed recruiting. It's pretty simple: when it comes to football, the team with the best ahtletes usually wins. Tedford has described recruiting as an "arms race," and the facilites have a huge impact. Why else would any player who was offered to Cal and Oregon go to Oregon? They have one of the best facilites in the nation. Until now, those 5-star guys that came to Cal (Rogers/DJAX), came because of Tedford.
Rodgers was actually a relative unknown when Tedford got him from Butte.
And you can certainly win without 5 star athletes. These are 18 year old kids, they still have so much growing to do. Guys like Alex Mack, Justin Forsett, Will Ta'ufo'ou, JJ Arrington, Tyson Alualu, Mike Mohamed, Mike Tepper, Cameron Jordan, and Chris Conte were all lightly recruited low ranked prospects.
And then you will have high profile guys like Ayoob, Kyle Reed, and Mbakogu who underachieve.
The #1 QB in the country of 2010 is most likely gonna commit to Cal. His top 2 choices are BYU and Cal. And USC isn't even in his top 10. Cal will be rolling again come the next couple of years.
you guys i've been a diehard cal fan since 2006, but this is the first year i've paid attention to recruiting and from my view this class looks like shit. but, if all the other classes with lynch, hughes, arrington, jackson were considered the same then it would be better. what were all the other classes considered like before at the time?
Arrington and Hughes were not big time recruits. Something that Tedford does very well is take kids who have talent but just need some developing and he can develop players like no other. This class is not "shit." Saying that just proves you don't understand recruiting and player evaluating. This is a talented class that filled holes. Next year's class will be special if Cal can get 10 wins and possibly get into a Rose Bowl.
it is "shit" if it's the 40th best class! do you want to be the 40th best team in football? no, and you don't want to be an underrated overachieving team like oregon state, you need 5 star players like randall carroll, adam hall, devon kennard! then they turn out to be players like marshawn lynch and desean jackson on one team! that cal team in 2006 was UNBELIEVABLY good on paper, maybe best ever!
You keep proving that you aren't schooled in recruiting yet. Cal got dinged on rankings because they took a smaller class. This is a very good class that filled needs very quickly. Also Randall Carroll and Adam Hall weren't five stars. Don't let rankings fool you especially. There's not much difference between a three star player and a 4 star player. And Rivals doesn't scout as well on the west coast as they should, most of all the bay area. So this class is better than it looks.
dude stop being okay with decent classes. cal is a much more attractive offer than USCum. i mean cal is the place for future nfl stars and academics and great weather where you don't get buried on the depth chart.anybody who doesn't know this is a fool!
I'm with you on that but Cal does have it's limits as a program right now. Once the new facilities are up we'll be able to recruit with the best of 'em. But until then Tedford will have to continue to make the best of a mediocre situation. And in the 2010 class he has taking an initiative much earlier than he ever has. A ten win season and Cal will have a special class.
look its all based on scout evaluations. Steve Slaton was a 3 Star recruit and look where he is now. Yeah thats right the League. Its hit or miss not every 5 star turns into Barry Sanders
Todd McShay is not someone who's opinion is worth taking seriously. Tedford has done wonders within the limits of the program. And yes we do have to replace 3 excellent linebackers but next year's team will also be the most talented in the Tedford era with 8 returning starters on offense and 8 on defense( I'm counting Cameron Jordan as a starter this year.) Cal will make a run at the Rose Bowl next year.
Todd McShay incorrectly stated that Cal lost 4 linebackers. They "only" lost 3.
This isn't a program changing class in either direction. The momentum was up and down. However, now that the dust has cleared it's basically on par with what Cal has been getting under Tedford. In terms of pound for pound quality, it doesn't set new standards good or bad.
The class is fine. NO worries, Cal's class is always underrated. A little perspective, Alex Mack was 2 star recuit. These guys got it right when they talked about recruiting players for their system. Nothing wrong with that. Plus things will be much better when the facilities actually get built.
How dumb does Todd Mcshay look now....or at least how much dumber does he look now?

R u sure that he's really gonna go to Cal?? Whats his name
mkretzmer 2 years ago
his name is Jake Heaps and no it is not likely that he is sure that he is going to Cal unless he is Jake Heaps speaking.
Never the less, Heaps is a good qb but I personally think Austin Hinder out of Colorado is better and would be satisfied with either of them

we only lost 2 offensive lineman and 3 starting linebackers...
and we get Tepper for a 6th year
God dam
I doubt McShay could even name 3 of our starters on either side of the ball.
Then you got wareagle spoutin off about fUCLA out recruiting us?...
Uhhh hard to keep it up?
We have a bigger recruiting base and soon to be much better facilities that are actually in the same zipcode as our campus.

McShay has a point, though. Zack Follett counts double.
