Ok People the final Whistles are LIVEEEEEEE check 4.05 her whistle comes out a bit shaky for a moment. At first I thought it had been pre-recorded but it was live, well pretty amazing!
The song is too high for her and she should really consider rearranging the song for her performances. She's about 40 now and she was about 20 when she recorded that, her voice was sturdy as a rock and agile. Her voice has aged now and there's nothing wrong with accepting that. She goes off-key a lot here especially the chorus, she can barely hit the chest notes.
@benjsinister The song has some G5s which are actually pretty hard to hit, I agree she should sing it in a lower key, still the statement "she can barely hit chest notes" is completly false, she hits C5, D5, pretty easily but G5 are kinda hard for anyone to hit, even for young singers such as Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera (who yells above D5). So she´s still got some serious voice huh?

This is a severely flawed performance. She goes off key repeatedly. It's certainly a commendable effort considering her age and the years since she originally recorded the song, but the high praise she's receiving here is unjustified.

I think these performances are amazing. Except the whistle's are lipped. But all of the belts are 100% live which is amazing! More impressive than the whistles IMO.
I WAS THERE!!! it was amazing.. and 100% LIVE.. Me and my boyfriend were 6 rows from the stage.. OMG it was pure HEAVEN!! The Setlist Alone was PERFECT!! This night was so Magical.. Thats the only way to describe it..
@TheJakeshouse it's her song, and if after 20 years of singing it she can sing however she wants. still sounds incredible even if a bit off key at times.
she looked like she was about to faint at one point, she looked so exhausted =\, but she honestly did amazing. She still managed those whistle registers, without lip-syncing, and did great, although i'm not gonna lie i was surprised she fared as well as she did on the last whistle register, not many with nodules could do that.. and by not many i mean pretty much no one.
people always say how so many other artists are better vocalists that her, but anyone else that has the range of Mariah generally never did half the shows she did and did not release as many records, if she did a performance a month (like a lot of them other singers do) her voice would be exactly like it is on the 1991 record (which it is very close to here).

She sings pop and her label uses her wide range to just display her high notes, its how they market her, its what people pay to hear. That is the reality. If you even bother to research her performances, and also don't ignorantly ignore the fact that her label whored her throughout 1995-1996 sending her on tour and making her sing singles that she didn't even like. Its all there in black and white.

@Forever1Charmed I'm sure she knows most of the notes on the piano, but she hopefully will start using better techniques from now on, because her husband recently said that she has been listening to her first 2 albums a lot recently and even he wishes that he could see her doing something like "Someday" again because its one of the songs that first made him fall in love with her as an artist. The Christmas album showed a lot of promise too.

I think when you sing a song so many time then you got tired and can't produce all the emotions you did before. She is an amazing singer and many people know. Amazing, who says she has lost her voice may be crazy, and I'm not her fan. It's natural that after so much use, the whistle register disappears or gets difficult to access. It's part of our anatomy she's lucky to still have it.

Listen to The Great Frank Sinatra when he started ( tommy dorsey era ) and his later years ( reprise )...its like listening to a different person! What some people not get is, she isn't losing her voice. Her voice just changed through the years. Jumst one example: When she started out fresh her voice was a bit darker than in the daydream/music box era. It's not such a big difference, but you can hear it if you listen closely. That was the first time her voice changed and it again changed in the butterfly era getting more husky and airy.
Losing your voice after 2 hours onstage isn't an acceptable excuse. It's her job to hit those notes, not to mention how much people paid to hear her sing. They got cheated.
This was at the end of a concert, and she's bound to sound less than her best, because she's been performing for over an hour. And the whistle notes were just fantastic anyway. That D7 was out of this world, and it sounded so EASY!
Okay for anyone out there thinking she's loosing it. Let me tell you somebody that knows vocals to an exact. whistle voice puts so much wear and tear on your chords in return of decades of using whistles voice she has nodules. Only way to rid of them is to not sing or talk for long periods of time or sugery. singing at concert A you're vibrating at 440 vibrations per second. Hitting whistle to the pitch she's going she prob vibrating 3000 vibrations or more per second. You try that.
Well considering shes 40 in this video, she sounds pretty damn good to me. Also, she might not sound like she did in the 90's but she damn sure sounds better than majority of singers these days

@kimikia Well Johnny Mathis has been singing live at least from 1959 he is now 75 years old and still does concerts and his voice is in incredible shape. Shirley Bassey - she has been singing for a similar period from at least 1961 and now at the at of 73? I think she still has the most amazing powerful voice..check them both out on Youtube and you will see that they do not go off key and none of them "rasp" as does Maria. Then take Pavarotti, he sang for 40 years. That's what I expect!
@kimikia Exactly my point. Their Styles are Healthy and hers is unhealthy. Where as, if you listen to Celine Dion, she can sing powerfully and with a full chest sound but her voice shows less signs of wear and tear. However, she still has problems but with Celine, a lot of her sounds are made in the "head-voice" where-as Mariah's voice is mainly chest. This is one of the main reasons for the degradation in her vocal agility.
@kimikia One has to compare artists to understand the nature of the voice. interpretation vs technique, Performance vs natural or raw energy..this is entertainment and we have a right to judge according to our tastes and scientific knowledge of proper voice function.

I used to be one of those people who would say "She doesn't sound the same as in the 90s" etc. but now I realized...she's been singing non stop since then. What do yall expect that would do to her voice. That's like 20 years of singing not including before she was in the industry. Besides you also have to take those high notes into account. she looked like she was about to faint at one point, she looked so exhausted =\, but she honestly did amazing. She still managed those whistle registers, without lip-syncing, and did great, although i'm not gonna lie i was surprised she fared as well as she did on the last whistle register, not many with nodules could do that.. and by not many i mean pretty much no one.

people always say how so many other artists are better vocalists that her, but anyone else that has the range of Mariah generally never did half the shows she did and did not release as many records, if she did a performance a month (like a lot of them other singers do) her voice would be exactly like it is on the 1991 record (which it is very close to here).

@Forever1Charmed no. the reason is that she isn't perfect and NOT A PROFESSIONAL OPERA SINGER. She sings pop and her label uses her wide range to just display her high notes, its how they market her, its what people pay to hear. That is the reality. If you even bother to research her performances, and also don't ignorantly ignore the fact that her label whored her throughout 1995-1996 sending her on tour and making her sing singles that she didn't even like. Its all there in black and white.

You know, I think nowadays she sings her super high notes even better than 20 years ago ) She is amazing and I know it, but actually it doesn't matter what you sing if you use the right tecnique. But I have caught you thought and it's completely true. She haven't learnt singing if I'm not mistaken. She is a pianist, isn't she?

@Forever1Charmed I'm sure she knows most of the notes on the piano, but she hopefully will start using better techniques from now on, because her husband recently said that she has been listening to her first 2 albums a lot recently and even he wishes that he could see her doing something like "Someday" again because its one of the songs that first made him fall in love with her as an artist. The Christmas album showed a lot of promise too.

@DanKanzas I do agree! You are absolutely right. Moreover, she is a little bit tired of singing all those old songs. I think when you sing a song so many time then you got tired and can't produce all the emotions you did before. She is an amazing singer and many people know. I think most of them want her to be back. They hopefully wait for new albums and they will get it I hope. Personally, I want her to have some rest. To find the new material for the songs and then return to the stage.

Amazing, who says she has lost her voice may be crazy, and I'm not her fan. It's natural that after so much use, the whistle register disappears or gets difficult to access. It's part of our anatomy she's lucky to still have it.

I find amazing that some people are naive enough to think that singers have a perfect voice 100% of the time!!! Mariah has her bad days like everybody. A celeb of her stature has so much promotion, videos, interviews, trips....its crazy at one point she said that for yrs she was sleeping 4h a day. Anyway watch the abc Xmas special and the Xmas performances with Obama and the shows in Brazil at Barretos all 100% live and AMAAAAZING!!! Like the 90s! Wake up people she has it all!

It's just REALLY fucking hard to pull off this song after an hour and some's amount of concert-giving because of all the belting. That, and after 18 years, you can't expect a singer to be as good as they used to be. If it were just THIS song performed instead of an entire set, she would sound a lot better.

That, and apparently Celine doesn't talk very much nowadays, and that amount of vocal rest isn't going to hurt. Oh, and Mariah's voice is naturally lower, yet she belts higher, so that's wearing down the vocal cords bit by bit, correct technique or not.

She sounds AMAZING! I love it! Wish I would have gone to this concert! I think ever since she met Nick Cannon she's been WAY more happy, so I'm glad he's at this concert pumping up the crowd and cheering his wife on! You can even hear the happiness coming through the singing! :)

Listen to The Great Frank Sinatra when he started ( tommy dorsey era ) and his later years ( reprise )...its like listening to a different person! What some people not get is, she isn't losing her voice. Her voice just changed through the years. Jumst one example: When she started out fresh her voice was a bit darker than in the daydream/music box era. It's not such a big difference, but you can hear it if you listen closely. That was the first time her voice changed and it again changed in the butterfly era getting more husky and airy.

This was at the end of a concert, and she's bound to sound less than her best, because she's been performing for over an hour. And the whistle notes were just fantastic anyway. That D7 was out of this world, and it sounded so EASY!

Okay for anyone out there thinking she's loosing it. Let me tell you somebody that knows vocals to an exact. whistle voice puts so much wear and tear on your chords in return of decades of using whistles voice she has nodules. Only way to rid of them is to not sing or talk for long periods of time or sugery. singing at concert A you're vibrating at 440 vibrations per second. Hitting whistle to the pitch she's going she prob vibrating 3000 vibrations or more per second. You try that.

the thing with Whitney and Mariah, both have lost some of the former quality of their voices, the former having problems with her upper and belting register, the latter with her low and mid register.

@kimikia Well Johnny Mathis has been singing live at least from 1959 he is now 75 years old and still does concerts and his voice is in incredible shape. Shirley Bassey - she has been singing for a similar period from at least 1961 and now at the at of 73? I think she still has the most amazing powerful voice..check them both out on Youtube and you will see that they do not go off key and none of them "rasp" as does Maria. Then take Pavarotti, he sang for 40 years. That's what I expect!

@kimikia Exactly my point. Their Styles are Healthy and hers is unhealthy. Where as, if you listen to Celine Dion, she can sing powerfully and with a full chest sound but her voice shows less signs of wear and tear. However, she still has problems but with Celine, a lot of her sounds are made in the "head-voice" where-as Mariah's voice is mainly chest. This is one of the main reasons for the degradation in her vocal agility.

I used to be one of those people who would say "She doesn't sound the same as in the 90s" etc. but now I realized...she's been singing non stop since then. What do yall expect that would do to her voice. That's like 20 years of singing not including before she was in the industry. Besides you also have to take those high notes into account. Her mom even warned her when M was a kid that those notes could hurt her voice. Mariah said "But mom it doesn't hurt"
