I think Ryron demonstrated quite well here that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is more than enough for sport tournaments. On the other hand there are sport techniques that will translate well in a street situation as well, maybe not all but the core techniques will.
@hoppy760 Jiu-Jitsu,it self, is way more than enough for sport tournaments, street fights and mma. its is good especially for the mind (emotional , spirituall whatever people call) and also a damm good workout.
Both these guys are great but i still gotta go with Ryron...he isnt the best BJJ point fighter but i would take him in any street fight that went to the ground...over this guy for sure.... Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for life !
@patolento No i train Gracie Jiu-Jitsu which was designed for self defense...ie a street fight..I have trained at what i call a "BJJ Sport school" which teaches techniques that are only good for offical BJJ rules not self defense and a street fight. Training at a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy is totally different... I dont have the exact quote but as helio gracie said...modern bjj isnt true jiu jitsu, its focuses arent the same as original jiu jitsu, my jiu jitsu
@reallyletsdoit for you its better to stay away from sparrings against bjj sports schools and tournaments, because your main concern is not to fight others bjj fighters and you will get own. "BJJ Sport School" are not only good for tournaments , you forget that the best mma bjj fighters are competidors in gi, did you forget Carlson Gracie Team ``Gracie Jiu-Jitsu which was designed for self defense ie a street fight`` `` so you should continue to fight joe´s on street.
@patolento Yeah i don't think I'm bad ass and i don't go looking for fights or anything. All i mean is that i do Jiu-Jitsu for self defense primarily and because i enjoy it...I'm just not into tournaments and learning techniques that only work in a BJJ gi on tournament. But i still respect people that compete and do it for tournaments, its really whatever is important to you and what you enjoy.... BJJ for life
@kanguesso Pretty close. If your name isn't Roger Gracie or Jacare you're probably gonna lose. Ryron might be the best in the world in a roll until submission, but unfortunately they're not too big on sport JJ.
no, cassio is an amazing practitioner too, it shouldn't have been easy even for ryron. that being said, ryron dominated that fight, controlling cassio in terms of position. If the fight were to continue, I believe ryron would have won that fight (not that it matters at the tournament, but still).
dont get me wrong when i say ryron is a phenomenal grappler, yet when you think he's been rollin since he can walk, he's got about 15 years on anyone else he shouldn't be getting taken the distance.
@gutrupture thats not necessarily the case, there are many world champs in bjj that only started training in their teens. The training of the gracies ony got serious if they wanted it and when they were older. Also ryron was a black belt a short time when this match took place.Furthermore the gracie academy never concentrated on sport grappling so you arent going to get many high level sports players there.

@reallyletsdoit Can you give me a few examples of BJJ techniques that "only work on tournaments" but would not work on the street?

Ryron is simply fricking awesome! I have no doubt he could be a contender as a world champion if he adapted to modern sport point rules.

They should turn off the White Zombie album and just let them concentrate on fighting.
