  • there is effect pedals being used here, i prefer electric guitar without effect pedals, neither external nor built in. even in overdrive channel, i want just the amplifier overdrive, nothing more than that

  • woooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • Might sound even sharper on a Tele but with FX pedals the way they are these days, you can play just about any guitar and sound a bit countryfied. Nobody but the guys checking out the headstocks would know!

  • Eric Johnson is the master of chords, bends and solos!

  • ej has a very very unique style. no one plays like him. i dont want to say that he is the best on the planet. that wouldnt be objective. but i think it is right to say that he is one the guitarist that wil live forever because of their unique and virtous style.

  • I wish I knew how to play this kind of stuff...country style riffs sound absolutely beautiful on my Dean ML...

    Eric, I bow to you....

  • he's asian

  • Every phrase he plays is so beautiful. And has his personality. Amazing!!! I Love EJ.

  • awesome bends!!

    and swells... gadd damn

  • thought he was british coz of white cliffs of dover.

    wich is in britain.

  • turn the delay off dude!!

  • is this a dvd? if so, WHERE CAN I FIND IT!?

  • @hiphopsucks96 Amazon.

The Fine Art of Guitar - Eric Johnson.

  • fuck strats

  • Eric Johnson has played this same strat for many years and even had one built by Fender and sold to the public as a a replica.

  • His volume swells make my pants swell.

  • @pennekre

    LOL!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • he does know the fine art of playing the guitar.

  • i dont like strats much, i refer gibson, now everybody send me annoying comments telling me im wrong

  • your wrong

  • Good musicians use both, they are completely different and anyone knows that

  • agreed

  • your wrong lol

  • way to be original there bucko

  • What a revelation: EJ is human. He actually clammed a lick @ 1:11. That is the FIRST time I've EVER seen or heard him make a mistake. I think one is his limit, though.

  • @Kirok watch him play cliffs of dover live, you'll find a show or 2 where he makes a few mistakes I almost pissed myself the first time I saw him mess up I was so shocked

  • He cut that finger off later that day. He grew one back immediatly of course.

  • Notice how most of these demo videos are done with Fenderr Strat?

  • It's the most popular brand of guitar ever... not really that surprising.

  • You just burned him so bad ha

  • The Strat is an incredibly versatile guitar!!

A Gibson Les Paul sounds GREAT when distortion is thrown in, but clean.....it's quite BORING!

A Strat sounds it's most beautiful through a Super Reverb or a Twin Reverb....CLEAN....with just a touch of chorus! Chilling!!

  • You forgot about a slight touch or reverb!!

  • @ib422000 strats are the most easy for volume swells !!

  • @ib422000

Its because Eric Johnson is a Fender Endorser.

  • @ib422000

EJ can get his sound on just about any guitar

  • yes he uses a pick but its a really small jazz pick that can be tucked into your hand easily

  • usualy always, he can tuck it into his hand or into his fingers to use all fingers

  • wow amazing guitarist

  • ej 4 eva

  • This is really cool stuff but I don't have a clue of what he's actually doing. Is this standard tuning?

  • Yes, it's standard tuning.

  • absolutely agreee

to me the most underated guitar player...

he is so good with all of his tecniques he is AWESOME

  • such a versatile guitarist

  • why isnt this guy as famous as he deserves to be, god-damn, sounds like heaven

  • Comment removed

  • But I have to say, Gary Moore is frickin underrated too. Listen to his solo stuff like wild frontier and murder in the skies.

  • So true. Eric is a true musician, he has everything Skills , picking, fingering , reall nice compositions, style , the looks, attitude.most People like easy music i guess 99 % don't understand true virtuosic music. pretty sad actually. I hate it when people say music like this is boring they rather listen to top 40 music which is fuckin ridiculous most of the times.

  • Some people just don`t get what music is,

how it works, my wife doesn`t ! People often rubbish what they don`t understand,

Eric`s an inspiration if i manage to find One sweet note from listening to him i`m happy..True talent is rare ! I`m slightly in awe of him, and thats rare for me..

  • Dude , he is just showing one of his techniques here. Eric johnson is great. Show me some guitar playing than you little depressive black haired emo fag

  • So true. Britney "no talent" Spears Make millions. while TRUE ARTIST Like eric Is almost unknown outside guitar cirkles.

  • @tremalow he's a solo artist which means like vai and satriani you probably only know about him if you play guitar

  • @aaronmackguitar, Nobody has ever heard of Santana either.

  • @guitarslim56 haha, not true bro, you cannot forget that in the early 2000's he had multiple pop hits, he is deffinitely a household name.

  • @tremalow He is - Haven't you heard of Eric Johnson? Do a search on Cliffs of Dover

  • AWESOME........

  • Hahaha

  • good work.

  • if you wanna hear volume swells, and violin-sounding guitar listen to roy buchanan. ''Livestock'' is a great album.

  • The epitome of musicianship!

  • The Fender Stratocaster was made especially to do this. To be able to do thoses volume swells and other steel guitar stuff. He had the volume buttom right next to the bridge, unlike the Telecaster that had it really far away.

  • OMG he doesn't even use volume pedal to produce violin sound, one of the best performance from Lord of Guitar.

  • It's very skillful, but I prefer the sound of a volume pedal, post gain and pre delay - It's smoother when you're using overdrive, I find.

  • he has a perfect style

  • Beauty, this guy is amazing with his control

  • Love the volume swells. Give the tone a whole new colour.

  • If you wanna hear volume swells at it's maximum level, check out Yngwie Malmsteen's Echo Etude. It's just beautiful

  • checked that out. It's hard to do a volume swell on every note at that pace using the knob.

    Very neo-classical!

  • joe bonnamassa is just as good with the volume control. Check him out

  • I am brilliant with the volume control. Just a shame I'm crap at the string picking thing. And guitar playing in general. Oh well, let's keep practising...

  • practice your grammar too.

  • You mean practise. The verb is to practise. A doctor has a practice. I got an 'O' Level in English language.

    Seriously.

  • haha. thats bullshit. you dont "practise" something. you practice. practise isnt a verb.

  • Hmmm. Perhaps we should clarify the English as opposed to the American spellings. Practise is the verb. Practice is the noun. Check it out in the U.K. English dictionary. Or, don't bother and enjoy Eric Johnson. Whichever, have a nice life along the way. Oh, and feed the ducks. :-)

  • Exactly why I love Youtube comments.

Nowhere on Earth do tangents occur as frequently.

  • I agree. Good guitar skills on your channel by the way. I particularly liked the guitar round the back technique. Show off.

  • Aha all in a days work.

Ashamedly drunk in that particular video though!

  • hahahaha

    lol

    lol

    haha

    that was funny

  • Hey I do play guitar, Im saying my friend doesent appreciate Eric Johnson's music. My friend is the poser not me. This kind of music is for the highest type of music enthusiasts not lame ass duchebags who likes to put other people down.. Yeah kiss my ass.. I'll write whatever I want to write, you want to suck this? Then keep your mouth open.

  • Should we say this guy is a genius, my friend Amir Richard likes to make fun of him by dancing like the movie flashdance whilst Im playing Cliff of Dover on gtr hero..

  • A response and a comment.

    1) Yes he we should say he is a genius.

    2) Your friend sucks.

  • why dont you guys just do it with each other in the ass and get it over with. Dont even watch this.. Go back to Jonas boys or fall out guy. This musio is for the elite

  • Im not responding anything. Im asking a common acknowledgment of Eric johnson's dedicated guitar playing. Then Im adding a humorous incident which Im mad at my friend for not enjoying Eric JOhnson music as much as I do.. People sucks in general.

  • You play guitar hero - so both of you suck.

pick up a real guitar you poser.

  • As much as I despise Guitar Hero, if we're going by your logic.

If you kill people in GTA but don't do it in real life, aren't you a poser?

Also, everyone stop saying this music is for the "Elite" it's not, EJ's such a Virtuoso that his music pretty much appeals to anyone.

  • i dont kill people in gta :p

  • The game's boring anyways :P

  • Wow! I can't believe he made that sound like a steel guitar. LOL That's awesome!

  • He's such an amazing player. So great at so many styles. And he's a humble man, unlike so many posters here.

  • and of course is he the master of tone

  • I cant believe there are people ridiculing how this guy plays. Why dont you know it alls just take what you can get and do something with it. Screwballs! He is a great player and will be a legend in the hall of greats as long as there are guitars :)

  • thats so special

  • Despite the others saying... He's fucking great!

  • he has really small hands.

  • you know what they say about men with small hands =P lol

  • am i really the only one that doesnt like this guys tone? its nice and pleasant and all, it sounds good. i just dont really like it that much.

  • Yeh, I think I know what you mean, great notes selection and he is a master, but tone wise it's all a bit too safe, as if we have an accountant in control of the guitar. Having said that, i wish I could own his skills and i can see that he is a guitar lord. Just a safe one, that all.

  • haha good point. i read in an interview once where he said he was going to stop obsessing over tone so much so he can focus on composing and playing. im not into any of his music much really, but i really admire is ability and dedication.

  • He has pretty good tone, but he uses delay and alot of other effects which i think reduce from the overall tone.

  • yeah, i didnt mean it was a bad tone. i just am not THAT big of a fan of me. it doesnt seem to be miles ahead of other players tones. he plays incredibly though.

  • I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it that much, especially when he's playing isolated licks like here. I would take his tone into my mouth, though.

It's odd on some of Shawn Lane's instructional odds and ends . . . mad delay and reverb. I think they both come into their own when playing with music instead of unaccompanied bits.

  • 0:28-0:33.... brought chills to me. One of those powerful 5 seconds I've ever heard from an electric guitar.

  • He is using 0.09 strings right?

  • .15 because he's tough.

  • blown away!!!!!!!!

  • totally agree!!!

  • he plays like a is afrading to play false notes:funny man indeed!

  • John 5 must be a big fan of his!

  • He sure is

  • I have listen to Bela, I love his music.

  • Wow, EJ just covers the entire spectrum.. seems there is nothing he can't do..

  • this is the real master of the instrument!!! this is the faster and melodyous player in the history!!!

  • HillbillyJ, i'd love to hear/see some of your banjo playing. I've heard banjo's that sound like guitar too.

  • There was a video online but but it has since been removed. I have a cd, no real know-how to put up a vid though. Our band just got involved with a record company so maybe we'll have some stuff on Amazon this year. Other than that I got nothing.

  • If you want to hear banjos that sound like guitars, look up Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on Youtube. Every single member of that band is a virtuoso.

  • Nice techniques, but you can hear the massive hum from his amps. LOL

  • It's a Stratocaster, what do you expect? :)

  • "It can create quite a non guitar sound."

Forgive me, but if you don't want to play guitar, don't. Its that simple. A few steel style licks are cool but if you want to have a steel guitar sound for a whole break, get a steel guitar!!

  • You're not forgiven. :) Sorry, I completely disagree. Music is about pushing boundaries, inventing new ways of doing things. Did anyone tell Hendrix not to play his guitar like a Machine Gun or a helicopter? Who in their right mind tells Steve Vai to stop imitating the human speech on 'The Audience is Listening'?

  • You're quite a dumbass...ever heard of innovation? go play your emo stuff somewhere else.

  • Hey man, I'm not down with that emo crap, don't you be telling that stuff to me. I'm just saying, I'm a banjo player and I've heard electric banjos that sound like a guitar. I would follow my own advice and just get a guitar if I wanted the sound. I'm just sayin

  • Play any Earl Scruggs?

  • Heck yeah, hes my favorite.

  • Hell yea man, I bought a banjer whileback...i'm a picker myself...got the Scruggs instructional book and whatnot...then my damn 5th string tuner broke..haven't fixed it yet.

  • Cool to meet another picker. Started picking Nov. of '06, gots Earl's book and basically feel in love with his music after that. I may never forget the first time I heard those tuners on Flint Hill Special, that was awesome! Sorry to hear about your 5th string tuner, is it friction or geared?

  • master of the volume trick.non other than Jeff Beck, whom he swipes or borrows some styles from.Johnson is better in my opinion though

  • Love to see him play a pedal steel, some artists stick to the one instruments these days, they could write better for EG. A horn if they bought one....

    Just saying...:)

  • hey everyone, im the real 631203 someone has commented using my username 631203 which i inadvertently left open or press yes for auto entry but please im tired of all these replies of yours. let it be known that im not a fan of eric johnson nor would intently say something against an artist which is not to my taste. regards and peace to all

  • what dvd is this from

  • The Fine Art of Guitar by Eric Johnson.

  • The greatest!

  • This stuff is great! very useful tips! I can't stand those speed playing vids! I always favour the guys that keep it slower :)

  • And that's exactly why the volume is so close to the bridge to begin with.

The strat was designed with western swing in mind and also so a guitar player could in extra emulating pedal steel *nodnod* :]

  • good !!good !!vini brazil

  • Phil Keaggy is also a longtime master of volume swells.

  • No one said he created this technique. It's been around for ages, popularised by the likes of Roy Buchanan and others. :)

  • Actually, it was more of a "Jeff Beck" thing, which was created long before either Eric Johnson or Steve Morse were on the scene. For the record though, Morse can't TOUCH what EJ does, even though he's a fine guitarist in his own right.

  • i think beck got it from roy buchanan.

check him out if you dont know him.

  • Whatever, you don't know shit about bein a guitard player.

  • Not everyone can be Hashbrown. Cut EJ some slack!

  • :-O How dare you sir!

  • your idiocy burns my mind.

  • This man kept me alive on the guitar for the last 15 years.

    thanks, Eric.

  • Genius.

  • fantastic!

  • Wow. Sounds nothing like an electric guitar

  • that's what a clean stratocaster sounds like

  • Cool!

  • how do you learn from this. wow eric is the best. also check out van wilks (my uncle) he is also very impresive. he and ej are very close freinds. i have a strat signed by both of them.
