@kristijanadrian For the common student learning pre-calculus, neither is a valid answer. You may be correct, but that won't help you with doing a test for a pre-calculus teacher.
@kristijanadrian The concepts in this video are just for 2-dimensional functions plotted on the xy-coordinate system and only related to symmetry about the y axis or the origin. Thus a function can be neither even nor odd. But more importantly are the definitions of even and odd. Based on those definitions, there are functions that are neither even nor odd.
OMG...my teacher made this appear to be like rocket science, this guy is FANTASTIC! Thank goodness for you tube and people who can really explain a process.
@fagg121213 It doesn't matter if the function is factored or not, or that it is even a polynomial function. What matters is that we need to find f(-x). If f(-x) simplifies down to f(x), then the function is even. If f(-x) simplifies down to -f(x), then the function is odd. If f(-x) simplifies to neither of those two things, then the function is neither even nor odd.
@linda83514 If the graph of is symmetrical to the y-axis, then it is an even function. If the graph is symmetrical to the origin, then it is an odd function.
honestly im an advanced student and nobody simply told me 'plug -x in, if its the same thing it was, its even. if its the opposite of what it was, it's odd. if it doesnt match either, it's neither. a very easy concept commonly made difficult.
great thanks alot very clear and practical and understandable

what do you do when their is no negative to factor out of the f of x when looking for negative f of x
jeanniex0x0 4 months ago
@jeanniex0x0 We can always factor out a -1. For example: 2x-9 can be rewritten as -1(-2x+9).

How can you determine algebraically if the function is symmetrical across a certain line, eg. x=2?
