This fight shows that Kenny would have beat Larry in his prime. Kenny was at least a couple years past his best here and Larry was pretty close to prime.
It was a great fight. Larry won. It was very close and I agreed with the decision. I remember watching the fight live when I was 15. Norton was one tough SOB to have taken those piston jabs and keep coming in.
A great fight, but Norton was completely robbed. The two exchanged rounds in the early going and then it was all Norton after that, with the exception of the 13th, when he got hurt and Holmes dominated. I score 1,3,5-12,14 and 15 Norton, and 2,4 and 13 Holmes. On the 10-point-must system, with Holmes having the only dominant round (13th), Norton would win 146-138. In Holmes favour, he kept up a good pace, took Kenny's best shots and looked fresh at the end. Norton basically gave up after this.
Norton walked through everything Holmes had, and busted him up. That's the Marine Corps for ya. Bust Ali's jaw and bust Holmes' body. No more talkin. No more dancin. If Holmes had any power though, I think he could have been the greatest of all time. What a jab. Holmes had great timing. Was a great ring general, and he was so savvy that you just couldn't hit the guy. Norton proved that you had to be tough enough to get inside and go to the body. Last round is epic.
@kuriaki71, I agree if we're talking about THIS version of Holmes. This was a great fight, but the Holmes of 1978 wouldn't have lasted five rounds against Foreman fighting this way. The Holmes of, say, 1982 or 1983, who took less risks and had an improved jab which was harder to counter, may well have outpointed Foreman, but Big George could still turn the lights out at any second. Holmes-Foreman is a real pick 'em.
@iljn1988 I disagree. Holmes was a more powerful version of Jimmy Young. Just like Ali was a faster version of Jimmy Young. Foreman would have tired himself out and would have eaten Holmes jabs in the later rounds. Ali W Foreman Young W Foreman and Holmes W Foreman.
@76WestSports, in fairness though, I think Foreman's loss to Young was a bit of a freak result, but I understand what you're saying. My point is, THIS version of Holmes would not have lasted the distance against Foreman. He took a lot of punishment in this fight, and a leaky defence like that just wouldn't work against George. Foreman wouldn't have let Holmes off the hook like Shavers and Snipes did once they decked him. The Homes of '82, say, with a better defence, may outpoint Foreman, though.
I have watched the fight again in full, and scored it the same. 8 rounds in favour of norton, 7 rounds for holmes. Please fight fans score the fight round by round and let me know how you scored the fight. Try to be objective. Holmes did build an early lead. But watch closely between rounds 7 to 15. In these rounds I had holmes only winning round 10 and 13. As for the second Ali vs Norton fight, I still have Ali winning by at least a 7 rounds to 5 rounds margin.
@XavierMarciano, I can understand anyone scoring it 143-142 to Norton as you did, however I made this a 143-142 fight in Holmes' favour. He literally pulled it out of the bag in those final twenty seconds. I scored rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 15 to Holmes, the rest to Norton. Some very close rounds in it though, so whatever the result, there was no robbery here.
I have watched the whole fight again and yet I have scored it the same. I scored it as 8 rounds for Norton, 7 rounds Holmes. As for the second Ali vs Norton fight, I watched that again and felt Ali did win that by at least a 7 rounds to 5 rounds margin. Here holmes builds a strong early lead but between round 7-15 he only won two rounds 10 and 13. Please all fight fans watch this fight back in full and score objectively. Let me know your round by round scoring of the fight. Mine is below.
I scored it like this R1 holmes R2 holmes R3 Draw R4 holmes R5 norton R6 holmes R7 norton R8 norton R9 norton R10 holmes R11 norton R12 norton R13 holmes R14 norton R15 norton, I feel as if I scored it right, thats 144-142 in favour of norton, the round I scored a draw, I wrote as slightly in favour of holmes, so even going at that I have it 143-142 in favour of norton, watch from round 7 on really close, Because I only gave holmes rounds 10 and 13 between 7-15, and I watched it close.
@XavierMarciano seems you score as many rounds as possible for norton, giving him every close round and scoring a holmes round even? That's forcing the result you want!
@primeboxers Its not the result I want, I'm not a big fan of either fighter. I really tried to score the fight objectively. I scored it, the way I saw it. How did you score the fight round by round? I would be interested to know how you scored the fight, maybe I got it wrong but I felt I didn't. I would watch it again, what was your round by round scoring?
10 rounds to 4 for Holmes going into the final round... great ring generalship, stunning left jab, just too much for Norton. There are just too many long stretches in this fight where Norton pursues and never throws/lands any punches whilst Holmes consistently lands the jab.
I TOTALLY agree with the judges seeing this as a very close contest, and DISAGREE with those who act like Holmes should have scored an easy victory. Round 15 (fantastic round, by the way) was Norton's. And KN, I felt, was better in those later rounds overall -- despite LH's super round 13.
@WETOFREAK it wouldn't be 143-142 back then cause i believe they scored by rounds, and larry holmes had 8 rounds won already before rounds 13-15, larry won more rounds but damn kenny norton came back like a champ they both deserved it both great fighters! one of the best fights ever!
Indeed dwcsl 9-5-1 145-141 Very great fight, Norton could have won if he hadn't let Homes built up such a lead. We don't see heavyweights like these anymore. God bless this era

No more 15 round fights. They should bring it back 15 rounds only for heavyweights.

holmes has said he could have beaten foreman, i beg to differ maybe he could have beaten a old foreman but not the foreman from early 70s

@76WestSports
foramn beat holmes easy in 1973-1974 for forman vs young , almost people forget or dont know
forman after loost with ali he stop boxing 2 years 1974-1976 not only stop boxing forman
stop sport also during 1974-1976 after ali fight
so forman when he come back in 1976 first fight with lyla forman beat lyla but forman down 3 time
in 2 rounds , so forman when he lost with young 1977 hes not same power before 4 years ago
1973 when he kill frazier and norton
