  • the word you are looking for is cooking in lard...... all fat.which has flavor...

  • hey great vid i also am in love with smelt fishing and cooking them too but i wanna try yourmethod. what setting is the stove on to heat the grease and how long do you let it heat up for.

  • @TheOutdoorsOnly Hey thanks, it is prety fun to do. But the heat depends on your stove....I guess medium, and you can try to put a peice to see if it fries....and I guess you can gage afterwards how much heat it needs, but for sure not too high ;)

  • @jihadacadien well when i fry them the flour seems to fall off and just clog up in the grease and im using it on the setting 7. my stove may just be a peice of shit haha.

  • @TheOutdoorsOnly Well some of the flour will collect in the bottom of the grease as you cook them, so it might be normal

  • This was great. Very informative and your accent is cool too :-D

  • @tomduffdotnet well glad it helped you ;)

  • smelt is a dirty fish. sometimes theres worms on these fish.

  • @myfeet14 Well make more nutrients! lol

  • @myfeet14 With all fish, they all have worms. Hold a piece of salmon up to a light, and check that out.. Its normal

  • @myfeet14 all fish can get worms, here in canada the smelt caught in rivers are the cleanest fish you will ever find.

  • I'm gonna make this for lunch. Thanks!!!

  • @MrSkulleyes Cool, so was it good!?

  • @jihadacadien

    Fantastic. Thanks for the help!

  • @MrSkulleyes ;)

  • Hi! Thanks for the video. It was useful. I wasn't sure how to make the fish lie flat. There are non-toxic nonstick pans. The best ones are ScanPan and Calphalon. They don't use TEFLON, which is the one that can be dangerous if scraped because of the type of polymer that it is. I hope this helps! Again, thanks!! I'm going to try this. It reminds me of my ice fishing days as a little girl in Maine. :) I'm in Texas now....no ice fishing here!

  • @stefaniedurbin Thanks, and I still prefer my good old pan ;)

  • Gread idea about cutting along the spine!

  • @stroover Thanks ;)

  • Nice! I like the idea about cutting the ribs along the spine. Great idea!

  • @stroover Thanks it works great too!

  • Wow man. I made these the exact same way last night. (I used frozen from the store) I had cooked them before but never sliced them like you did! Holy god they were delicious. Awesome video

  • @Wakefulpanda Cool!! This is one of the good thing about winter here..smelt ice fishing.

  • I have some very small frozen smelts. Is it necessary to gut them, or can I just cook them whole?

  • @PsychoSeaweed Well my mother use to cook them whole, the guts and such don't taste so bad, but they do taste a little bitter. and you'll probably have to take the spine out as you eat them...but yeah you can do it.

  • @jihadacadien They are about the size of my pinky, so quite a bit smaller than the ones shown in your video. I guess I will try a small amount of them whole the first time, and if that does not come out well, then I will take the extra time and gut them the next times. Thank you very much. Cheers! :D

  • @PsychoSeaweed Let me know how they turn out!

  • cancer what ????????????

  • I no longer use canola oil due to the GMO factor. I found "healthy" lard from grass fed animals at my local health food store. Only oils I now use are peanut, extra virgin olive oil, butter and coconut oil/butter. Did you see ironhead41's vid on lard? That made me look into using lard.

Lighting looks good. Fish looks great! Only down side is the smell cooking fish leaves in my house. :p Drives our cats wild, too. lol

  • @VivianRinSC I use butter and olive oil now. i hate the smell of cooking fish like that.

  • Mmmmm Smelts kick ass!!

We had some last night here in BC!

What a good feed of smelts it was, Thanks

Ron Poirier and Sally Frees for bringing some out when u came last month!

  • @glassmasterken They sure do! I think I'm making some more tomorow! You made me hungry for some!

  • what about the bones???? do u eat them

  • what about the bones????? do you eat them

  • @TROYENGEL The samaller one yes. And you don't even notice. but the bigger smelts...I take the spine out. It just come off real easy once it's cooked

  • WOW.. what camera are you using?

  • @JogBird a Flip ultra HD And I have a lot of lights and a homemade spotlight so that's why the image is so good. And to thing I only paid like 230$ for the cam!! It's a little wobbly when it's hand held but on a tripod it's awsome! Look it up it may be a good cam for you too.

  • good ol Nova Scotia smelts...gotta get out and catch me some...looks good :-)

  • @northernpike56 Thanks but mine were New Brunswick ones Mmmmmmm!

  • only separated by the bay bro...

  • @northernpike56 Lol yeah I'm sure they travel a lot anyway.

  • next ya might have to show how to make and cook a traditional acdian rappi pie :-)

  • @northernpike56 I'd love to but it's more of a southern Acadian meal....I've never even ate it.But I hear it's good.

  • great hd video! How do you eat it? Just the sides or the boney middle too?

  • @timeforchili Well I just took the spine out before eating it. The small bones in the sides were not noticable. and they were GOOOOOOOO!!!
