dang it does look like he doesn't know what he's doing. makes him seem rawer. b/c it looks like he's just stabbing at random keys and somehow great music is coming out. the man was a genius.
man i swear it always just looks like he doesnt know what he's doing ... just like me... but... i dont know what im doing jejejeje. Thelonious rules!
the little fellow back in the kitchen of the village vanguard was the owner max gordon---they used to make grilled cheese sandwiches back ther till the mid-seventies----i knew max and he was a true connoseur of the arts
I think that is was intrigues me the most about him. His absolute lack of what we would call "technique". If you didn't know better, you would think he just stabs at the keys and somehow has brilliant music come out. Like Django with his two fingers, limitations can be imaginary.
He knows exactly what he's doing, his mind operates on a musical level that very very few will ever come close to understanding. Thats the beauty of it.
Eighth Part [Eight of spades]...Just 52 people have watched this video on YouTube, I feel so unique, so special, is like if this was a special show for me on the 3 am movie theather, in 1984. People interacting with him at the time were really moved, I think art is undoubtly connected to the artist life, I mean, the more you know about his life and his relations to other people, the more you'll enjoy his music, and how liberating it was!.
@AngeloAnnieMate: Just 52 people, eh? Rather than feeling special, I just feel saddened by this lack of appreciation for Jazz in yet another symbol of of its isolation. Like pearls before swine. There's an interesting review in The Nation of the new biography of Monk that was just published. The reviewer notes that big ring on his finger read "MONK" as he looked down at his hand. But to the audience it read" KNOW." And everyone should know this treasure.
@DarkHeartedMusician I think it`s Ray Copeland

monk indeed had a singular technique. it only looks like lack to those who dont know what they are looking at.

he made his transition in 82. so he could not have been seen in 1984. just a thought.

I love his sense of humor! "You'll flip, you'll flip for real" and then he does the gesture! gotta love Monk.
