Was the CDI less powerful than the Super Nintendo? It looks like the Super Nintendo version was actually much smoother and integrated. Perhaps the team simply put more effort into that one.
@Theowne The CD-i's main strength lay in its capability to play full screen MPEG movies and redbook audio. When it comes down to pure processing power, it was extremely weak. It was especially bad at rendering any actual graphics that were not a movie, it had very limited video memory and most of the games needed some trickery to make even the most basic things possible, like horizontal scrolling for example.
@HalfBlindGamer I guess I keep getting CDI and 3DO mixed up. Interesting that the wiki page describes the CDI as a media player first, and a console second....well, anyways, take it as a compliment that I'm watching all your videos while clearly knowing nothing about the CDi.
@Theowne The CD-i was primarily intended as a media player, games were just an afterthought (initially). This also explains why it lacks any real power, it just wasn't meant to be a console in its design (Philips didn't think there was a market for that). After its release, the games sold best, and that's when they kind of changed their strategy and I bet they regretted their limited view back then. Just look at how well the PS1 did, which can be seen as sort of a successor of the CD-i.
Too bad there's not enough interest in something like a RotR MUGEN remake where the controls and moves aren't shit. The graphics were there, the music was there (in some of them), the story was capable of being half-way decent, rip all of that shit and give them a better array of moves with instant control response and the game would be boss.
There is one extra feature when u have a dvc inserted, You get an option to use just sound effects and turn off the music, With no dvc, You can not turn off the music and have sound effects. You can only have music. Wow! (Not)
Sebastiaan, do you have the music from this game available? Since this pretty was the best off this game, and you made the Cd-i tetris music availble :). And to be honest, the game was pretty fun back when I was 6 :P who cared about special attacks back then lol. SPAM BUTTONZZZ@@. For some reason we only got multiplayer working a few times, and the multiplayer was pretty cool. Mainly cuz the other chars have special moves.
... nonetheless I agree that this game was kinda suckish lolol.
@Rdude60 Sorry, I do not have the music for this game. Once I hope to get back to ripping some CD-i music from games, as there is some great music to be had for sure. For now, I don't have the time for it though (it's pretty time intensive, depending on the game).
@austinmackert Interesting. I never played the 3DO version. It's pretty odd that they don't put music in that version as for the most part, the 3DO is superior to the CD-i. I do believe all version were made by different parties and there was little coordination in the creation of the different versions.
Have I mentioned that you are awesome sir? Thanks for showing that you can do great video game reviews without having to resort to ripping off AVGN. Cough Cough! (Irate Gamer).
Respond to this video... So nintendo gave rise of the robots an 8,0 but gave one of there best quality 1st party exclusives a 5,8 what kind of drugs were they smoking back before the internet was invented?
@Edgefox88 The article is from a Dutch games magazine called Power Unlimited, which claims to be the biggest gaming magazine from the Benelux (and back then it probably was). So Nintendo didn't rate it themselves. I was just being sour because it's hard to be objective towards a product you review if the company behind it pays your bills. Rise of the Robots got a lot of advertising in magazines, so it made a lot of money for those magazines too.
A bad cd-I game? Never! But really rise of the robots was bad. Guess if you spend too much time on the look and not the gameplay this is what you get. Top class review and my friends and I in Scotland love your work, thank you for entertaining us with you 5 star cd-I reviews.
I had the PC versión of this... the cinematics were way cooler... but yes the game still sucked... and it was HARD!, I mean: even in freaking easy mode that Loader robot (the first one) used to kick my ass. I think i never finished it... Hell I think I didn't even get to the last robot... military and sentry were immortals!
I had this junk on SNES. I really liked the monkey robot though and had some decent two player battles with my brother. You are right though, this game is a lesson in hype.
oh god i had the playstation version of this and it was even worse knowing the capabilities of the ps1. i mean i got it a year after i got mgs. and the music wasn't nearly that kickass.
Playitbogart on revver went over the hype saying it was poised to be the ET of his generation. I make the comment "Well it did become the ET of your generation--ET for the 2600 that is."
He did it on the SNES and showed even if you had gotten the 2 player option to work it was way broken as the robots were not balanced against each other.
Liked the review, I have this for Amiga and it looks a lot better than this version, although I don't like the game itself it still looks cool in the shelf. ;)
Arrgh! I remember when this steaming turd came out.. It was hyped at the time as the next SF2 ("check out those graphics dude!"). My life, everyone was so let down by it.. This review made me laugh - it certainly brought back memories, notably the good old 'music OR sound effects' option ^_^
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it. Nowadays you wouldn't be able to get away with such marketting stunts (directly comparing it to competition), they really went overboard with it too.
Hah yeah that music or sound effects thing is common on the CD-i. It's not very good at doing them both without the expansion, but since this game claims it needs one it seemed odd to me, that's why I tested it without the cart ;)
I'm sorry you had to suffer through this. I never asked for you to review this game...I already knew how terrible it was. I played it on the SNES. I never bought but I rented...that's a weekend down the shitter! I'm sure I rented another game that time to. I forgot what it was but I'm sure it was hella better than RotR. Good thing EGM had the balls to give it a low score. I feel sorry for those who paid $50-$60 for it.
It's good to hear that some magazines gave it some fairer scores. Most were just bought out and gave it somewhere around an 8 or even higher, just ridiculous!
I can imagine it'd hurt to rent this, but it'd be even more painfull if you'd have bought it at full price, that'd be a real waste of money.
I remember when this game came out, it was HUGE. Got a release on like every system at the time, and every video gaming magazine had an ad for it on every other page.
I never got around to playing it though, because I was happy to stick with my Mortal Kombat.
LMFAO, as if the commentary wasn't great enough, I loved the subtitles and at the end the serious proof that this game was way over hyped. You seriously crack me up my friend. these reviews are awesome!! This is another instant fav,....not the game but the vid lol. Great job man
Ah thanks Luke, glad you liked it! That last bit was an afterthought during editting (otherwise I would have voiced it I think) I just suddenly remembered the cover of that magazine so I quickly burried it out to see if I could do something with it, didn't expect it was that bad lol.
Thanks a ton for the fav, you're bringing it a ton of new subs lol.
I remember when this game was being hyped.... Mirage were boasting revolionary AI opponents that learned and adapted to your attacks. What a load of bollocks. The SNES version was much better and you could actually jump over each other, but it was still an abomination. Crap.
Hah right on with that AI crap they threw at us. Also remember that it would be 'fully 3D fighting" with '360 degrees of movement' and like '300 frames per animation' ugggg.
Very very good video! Informative, funny and you had a message though I must admit I kinda want to buy this game now just to experience the craptasic-ness of it.... Only question is what format do I buy it on? O_O
Thanks a lot for the feedback, glad you liked it :)
Any version would do I guess, but for the worst experience you'd probably have to go with either the CD-i, PC (on which this port is based) or Amiga version. Or you could try the Game Gear or Game Boy ports but those are pretty rare I think. I have no idea how well they play, but it can't be good!
Oh cool, I never got it when it first came out. I was never a bit figthing game fan and I remember seeing a promo on one of those demo discs for CD-i and didn't care for it any bit.
They also made an arcade machine of it too Seb, they just never released it as the AI had a major glitch they could never fix. The enemies never blocked.
But you should have seen the UK the country it was made in, they hyped it so much, they remade a gaming show (Bad Influence) opening video and nearly every journalist was offered to be a character in their own special copy.
I rented this from Blockbusters on launch for the SNES. and er, copied it with a SNES game copying machine. :D
Ah, so the arcade game never got to the actual arcades? I was wondering why I never saw a cabinet with it being so huge back then. Kind of weird how they managed to screw up that blocking though.
Wait you what? You copied that game? Now why would you want to waste a perfectly fine disc on that?
There's video of the arcade machine on an episode of early 90's UK gaming show, Bad Influence. But TBH there's not much difference, just no loading times as it's on custom hardware.
I never played Rise of the Robots 2 though, then again noone did, that's why it bombed, once bitten twice shy.
Well some versions of this game did have really nice graphics, but KI easily looks better, the art direction is soooo much better. Rare actually knows how to make a game.
Also where KI has crazy combo's, this one has none at all haha.
Hah yeah, after playing this for a while Clay Fighter, Shag Fu or even Ballz 3D don't look as bad anymore... untill you play those for 2 minutes of course haha.
I have very dark memories of playing it on the Amiga. Good thing we didn't pay anything for that game...as for any other game. Seriously, pirating Amiga games was just very easy.
Anyways, this game was horrible! Only that one Transformer game was worse, it didn't work right.
Haha I know what you mean, I doubt anyone who has a c64 or Amiga (or any of the other populair early computers) only has legit software. It was just to easy to pirate on those things.
I never played any Transformer game on the Amiga I think. Was it really worse than this? Ouch!
You're not kidding that this game was overhyped. Oh how happy I was when my video store had it. Things were great... until it was time to play the thing...
Now I know why I never new about the CDI back in the 90's when I was a child, with shit games like this, it's no surprise people didn't talk about it at school, plus, I don't even know if the CDI came out here in Australia, we were all too interested in the Mega Drive and SNES. My God, what a shit game, and what makes it worse is that you said the CDI was rather expensive as far as video game systems go back then. People would not want to spend so much on a system with games like this.
The CD-i was really expensive indeed. I have no idea how well it did in Australia or if they even existed there for that matter. Here they were a bit more populair since it pretty much was it's home turf here, but that's still not saying much though. No one was stupid enough to mention it on school over here either!
What system did you play it on? I'm sorry I missed the red one, I messed up recording it :( I love how that one is so freaking huge, more spots to hit it!
This game is a notoriously well-known abomination, shite on all platforms! How could people even think of requesting that you put yourself through it, especially on CD-i?!
Thanks, and is it ever hah, have you ever played any version of it? You being a big fighting game and all I'm sure you'd be able to tear it a new one lol
@SRZsmack you're not the only one!! -=]

Haha I know what you mean, I doubt anyone who has a c64 or Amiga (or any of the other populair early computers) only has legit software. It was just to easy to pirate on those things.
I never played any Transformer game on the Amiga I think. Was it really worse than this? Ouch!

Only one of my pirites I ended up buying on a proper and that was Road Rash.
That was only because the pirate ended up getting a virus.

You're not kidding that this game was overhyped. Oh how happy I was when my video store had it. Things were great... until it was time to play the thing...

Hah yeah a lot of people got suckered in by their over the top promotions and stuff.

I'm somewhat surprised their wasn't an Apple Macintosh version, given that back then quite a few popular games came out on the Mac.
Lachlant1984 2 years ago
Yeah that's true, kind of weird indeed. Back then there was some more mac love from developers, luckily these guys skipped it!

What system did you play it on? I'm sorry I missed the red one, I messed up recording it :( I love how that one is so freaking huge, more spots to hit it!
HalfBlindGamer 2 years ago
Oh god, no!
This game is a notoriously well-known abomination, shite on all platforms! How could people even think of requesting that you put yourself through it, especially on CD-i?!
