As a straight male I fail to see why we should deny the right to be just as miserable in marriage as everyone. *chuckles* Marriage is nothing more then a legal contract. It has nothing to do with religion, procreation, nor sexual gratification. And as anyone who's been married can attest too, sexual gratification has no place in marriage. *chuckles again*
GREAT news! I was e-mail friends for years for someone in California who voted for Prop. 8. I asked her why. She replied "I'm worried about the children." End of friendship. I'd never heard a bigger crock of shit. My 6-year-old niece attended my wedding 3 years ago. Is she now a 9-year-old crack whore? Or a leather clad uber-lesbian? No! She's a lovely little girl. Those against same-sex marriage can't provide one SHRED of evidence that it harms society. That's why they'll lose.
@RoulinBrooks The odd thing is that this proposition and ruling aren't about adoption at all. That is already legal in most states. The problem is that our opponents scare people with misinformation and outright lies. The fight against ignorance is a never ending fight. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "It's too bad that stupidity isn't painful."
@FantasticBabblings I actually didn't take her comment about "the children" to mean anything about adoption. But rather I took it as the more extreme "If same-sex marriage is legal, then the fabric of society will unravel and the End Times will come." You hear the nutcases say over and over that same-sex marriage is the gateway to the Apocalypse. But then they're asked "Provide a single example of society unraveling in those countries with same-sex marriage." They're stumped.
We in California were pretty excited. Though this is the second time a court has ruled that marriage was a fundamental right for all couples. I have my doubts about the eventual SCOTUS ruling. The lawyers seem to know they have the 5 votes. Let's hope.
@Castaa I am not sure how SCOTUS would rule. Either way, I think it will be a 5-4 decision. I have always assumed it would go to the Supremes, but I'm not certain your governor and AG will appeal it that far. I think the Ninth Circuit will uphold Judge Walker. The question is whether any other party has standing to appeal.
@FantasticBabblings I haven't heard either side saying it won't be appealed to the SCOTUS. I'm not sure who ultimately decides on the pro-Prop 8 side to appeal again. The governator will be long gone from office before any appeal is heard.
@Castaa Some orgs have filed intent to appeal, but I'm not sure if they have standing. I would like it to get to the high court, but I'd like enough time to pass to get another moderate or two on the bench.
Really weird for me, a guy born in denmark, that USA dosent have gay marriage rights as it is here in Europe. Because all through my childhood i viewed USA as the most modern country in the world.
but im glaad that these equal rights will propably be a reality for all gays in USA in the future...... or that i hope :-)
@jensshanssen222 Most modern and most corrupt. The people have very little say here. We have to thrash and scream for even the smallest and most logical of changes.
@jensshanssen222 In many areas we are a progressive country, but we are held back by a substantial minority of right wing religious fanatics who scare people in the middle.
Thank god, some positive turbulence in the west. While I agree with The Amazing Atheist that it would have been preferrable to put the overturning to a successful vote rather than simply rule it invalid, the sentiment is by no means to invalidate the success freedom has earned in casting out Prop 8. Being of questionable orientation myself, I am glad to see the Western world be a little more accepting.
@TheMinxTail I have to disagree. I don't think it is good to set a precedent of basic rights being up for a vote, even if my side wins. The very concept of civil liberties is freedom from majority rule for certain fundamental rights.
@FantasticBabblings Oh, I apologise, I by no means meant to infer that the majority is correct, and I certainly don't think that civil rights such as marriage are up for debate. I merely meant that in the case of legalising gay marriage, it would be preferable to change society from the bottom up, so that it was truly absolved of its homophobia. I certainly have no qualms with this state of affairs. Though I appreciate that for my dramatics, delaying civil rights is not an acceptable cost.
@TheMinxTail Waiting for society to change is a long process. If the US had waited for whites in the south to change their hearts and minds blacks would still be legally discriminated against. Civil rights was imposed by law and by courts and that hastened the change in attitudes.
@FantasticBabblings Yes, which is why I said in my previous comment (with a 500 character limit), I understand that the time that woud take is a very steep price and unacceptable casualty in the fight for freedom. Believe me, the space limit does m no favours, but I understand a fair bit more of all sides of the issue. It just seems like we're settling for second best, though due to my youth taht may just be my nagging idealism talkung (I turned 18 and came out as transexual last month).
thanks so much for sharing that. it's just like being there.

Looks like a good rally, good speakers, and a happy crowd. The reading from the actual decision was great.
