I fail to understand how no one can understand their music. Its all in 4/4 pretty much like seriously I have always found their music to be very followable. Yeah the syncopation is interesting but their songs are pretty much all in 4/4, (with a few exceptions) I think people overthink their music way too much. Just feel how the rhythm fits in with the 4/4 pattern. I LOOOOVE this band btw
@thebeastofdoom It's because they use Polyrhythms. For example, Tomas Haake (the drummer) uses Polyrhythms when drumming while maintaining a steady 4/4 beat. You really have to own their CDs or listen to more of them to understand why it's difficult for some people to get what they're doing.
@TheDeftonesVault I know they use polyrhythms. I am a session musician and a teacher and I understand what they are doing. Like this song is TECHNICALLY 6 measures of 5/16 and then a little 2/16 thrown on the end cycling over the 4/4(the beginning at least) I know all that, I am just saying I feel that kind of thing naturally and fail to get why other people dont. and yes I have all their cds.
@thebeastofdoom Well, I guess you shouldn't have posted it, then. You basically just answered your question. The reason you fail to see why it's difficult for some people to listen to them is because you feel it naturally while other people don't.
@NoaOno First of all I am not a hipster. I am not rich enough to afford the pre torn jeans. Second of all I can find the down beats. I am a teacher of drums and I know what polyrhythms are and all that(I actually performed electric red for a student of mine once to demonstrate, which by the way the beginning would be described as 4 measures of 7 and then one measure of 4 over a 4/4 pattern)I am just saying that this band is easy to follow once you give the song a good listen, chill out.
@thebeastofdoom That's true, I haven't tried this one out. But I would say that this is easily their hardest song to 'understand', because it's so fast
@chaclapa listen to bleed or sickening. i could see this song as not appealing to a first time listener but trust me theyre metal dude. just groovy rhythmic extra heavy metal
@chaclapa so if you know you dont like them then why are you searching songs written and performed by them? also i was trying to be nice to you but i see you only wanna take advantage of the fact that were conversing through the internet and act like you know what youre talking about. if you knew anything, you would know to at least respect meshuggah because theyre incredible musicians and pioneers. iron maiden sucks but theyre classic so i dont say anything. if you dont like, dont listen.simple
@chaclapa How in any planet is this not metal? By the way, just because they use polyrhythms does not mean they don't know how to structure a song. It's their way of confusing people like you.
I'll play this song at 21/12/2012 while the sky is raining meteor and shower the earth with burning rocks and erupting lava from exploding volcano while the ground subsides and the emerging tidal waves will shallow what is left of the modern civilization and the whole world get covered by toxic clouds that pouring acid rains down the chaosphere. woooooooooooooooooooo.
@dopefiend138 I did that about a month ago. The hardest part is deciphering those super-low notes, especially songs like in death is death and dancers to a discordant system, it's just non-stop
this was one of my first meshuggah's songs and i dont fucking remember how many times i listened to it before my fucking tiny brains got the riff guitar beat and drum beat throughout the whole song. same thing for new millenium cyanide christ. goddamit. at least now i can headbang to it correctly.lol.
@007Pogo Yep, I agree. Except for a couple of other bands, after Meshuggah everything else (even stuff that's labeled as "extreme") sounds pretty tame.
The other thing about Meshuggah is that their sound feel so... relevant? If you watch the news, I mean, war in Afpak, political violence in Middle East, narco war in Mexico, confusion, chaos.. what other soundtrack could you use?
@Kamdonion I'm sorry, DEP are a good band, I like some of their music, but they can't simply get to the point as Meshuggah do. Just my two c, of course...
OK. I've gone and bought alot of their albums, but this one sounds insane. Let's just say I don't have "I", Catch 33 and this one. GOT to find it. KILLIN riffs.

@ThimsNovedDrahcir It would seem so since you're appearing so butthurt. Maybe the wrong kind of excitement. OK, so you didn't leave a word out? I just thought if you had - "i just DON'T like the music." - your comment wouldn't have looked as contorted nonsensical.
Fact remains that you made a stupid fucking comment about the intellectual value of these lyrics that you don't understand, even though they appear straightforward to you. Meshuggah is more intellectual than any band you know.
@ThimsNovedDrahcir It sucks when you accidentally leave a word out and it changes the entire context of your message, doesn't it? I guess you're just beside yourself with excitement from the unusual attention you're getting.
@ThimsNovedDrahcir Meshuggah is way more intellectual than Mastodon. I don't think you you can even start to grasp the concepts behind these lyrics, as they're far too introspective and figuratively challenging for just anyone to catch on to. Actually, I don't get why you even comment on them, when you're only betraying your ignorance. I will not understand the folly of people.
@dujl Thank you, I'm glad you can see this and understand it. I don't see how people miss the whole value of something and it's meaning, and yet to dismiss it. It can be false information but it's structure and message is there and alive, it is nothing foolish....whatever..

Very straight forward, straight forward concepts. They don't dig into anything deep. Well maybe it's deep compared to what else you see out there, I understand. And mastadon I don't know. BUT Meshuggah has GREAT lyrics. Do you just not understand? Read catch 33's lyrics. If you think they are bad, please explain why before
all those that say something to the effect of "omg, i can't headbang to this beat" and etc.... Listen to Thomas' Cymbal hand (his right hand), head bang to that, as that is the Metronome of the Superband known as Meshuggah. It matters not where the snare and bass drums land, as they are all divisible by the counts he is keeping with the cymbals. And for fuck's sake, listen to some jazz sometime, might give you something to think about (Alan Holdsworth) -- Mfan.
@MetallicAtack Let's not do the whole "red is better than blue" thing. It always leads to a flame war and makes everyone involved look like a dick wearing a toupee.
@MetallicAtack Naw, by all means, it's good to make mention of other musicians to check out. I didn't mean to imply that you were trying to start a flame war, it just tends to happen when the musician vs. this musician thing is brought up. Some people just can't be civilized and open minded when it comes to comparing talent, but sometimes style and method transcend talent, rendering comparison obsolete. But hey, to each their own. Go with what you enjoy. Music=life.
Alright, so, my right speaker's been blown out for like a week, and as soon as I listen to this song, it just starts working again and blasts out some 'Shug. Almost like it's been asleep and it just needed some heavy ass music to wake up. Meshuggah: So metal it resurrects technology.
anyone know another music with a sound (i'm assuming its guitar) like at 2:13-3:05? cos it is an insane sound but i've only ever heard it on this song
@feedthefurnace6 Much of Frederick Thordendal's solo album "Special Defects - Sol Niger Within: Version 2.0" is based around this kind of stuff. I think it came out around the same time too.
Meshuggah has been pissing off other bands with songs so overly complicated like these since before i even knew what metal was. Love it.

@MetallicAtack Let's not do the whole "red is better than blue" thing. It always leads to a flame war and makes everyone involved look like a dick wearing a toupee.

@RipshawKlavicus I was never trying to start a flame war, I was just asking if it would be a good battle.
And if you want me to remove it, I will.

@arlothellama Goddamn. That is brilliant. How have I never heard that before? 'Shug. You sir, are the fucking man.

This song is good, but the slowed-down version on Rare-Trax pwns this song, hands down.

@feedthefurnace6 Much of Frederick Thordendal's solo album "Special Defects - Sol Niger Within: Version 2.0" is based around this kind of stuff. I think it came out around the same time too.
