  • Now that's what I call a convincing advert.

  • Was I the only one to be scared of this skeleton when I was little?

  • It's true, Scotch tapes are pretty good. I still have some of these old Scotch VHS tapes. True to mr skeletons word they haven't faded yet. The tapes are more than twenty years old now and play as if they were recorded yesterday!

  • @morrismagic08 I have to agree with you Scotch Tapes are really good this advert is more than 20 years old now this advert is going back to 1985 and I still have quite alot of old Scotch VHS Tapes my Video Tapes of Scotch has not faded mind you I never watch thme and my tapes are in very good condition even though mine are quite a few years old mine are not more than twenty years old but I have one Tape which was recorded in 1988 and the quality is great but I love this video advert at 0:00 cool

  • BRING BACK VHS!!!

  • lol the tapes last but the technology doesn't!!

  • now what would he do if he forced to go digital lool

  • I used to think the Skeleton was Bob Holness

  • @lloydy28 Wait... it ISN'T Bob Holness?

  • I used to have dreams about that poor skeleton rerecording and not fading away for all of eternity...

  • not fade just eat my bloody best programme i taped

  • Watched Buddy Holly at the Theatre and during it remembered the Scotch tape ad! Had to check YouTube and here it is!

  • Days of great adds like this have long gone... Let's hope people are still checking this add out in 20 years time .. Even if the tapes have faded out ( gone blue ) ! That's what happened to my star wars copy.. Should of bought Scotch hay .. Lol Modern day greats ..'mmh The fosters series ,, good call !

  • @Skindas TOP-NOTCH!!!

  • @Skindas I agree. Adverts today are so unconvincing.

  • Still got some of these somewhere

  • Advertises both VHS and Betacord.

  • @zionravescene

    I think he's improved, personally!

  • i used to love this ad when i was a kid.... tihis one and the one for toshiba.....

  • Having a disagreement with my brother. I perfer the Buddy Holly version of this song, he perfers the stones version. Both of us referred to this advert though :D good to see it again!

  • class advert that

  • Loved this ad when i was a kid! must be the on;y child if the 80's not scared by this!

  • @hadders81 i was born '82, this never scared ME!

    Re-record, don't fade away... : )

  • Hehe I remember Scotch Skeletion!

  • 20 years or so later and this is STILL scary to me. I was so easily frightened as a child.

  • lifetime guarantee eh?? i wonder whose honoring that now lol

  • This as used to scare me senseless as a child.....!!

  • I always found that skeleton slighdtly creeot,

  • re-record not fade away... re-record not fade away...

  • They may not have faded, but going from DVD quality to video quality will likely cause you to have an aneurysm as it is. Like going back to vinyl, it's fucking awful.

  • @bhk2006 No, vinyl has a charm of it's own. Not awful at all. Given the opportunity I'd use it more.

  • can you get this on dvd?

  • what happened to all the cretive and memroble ads of the eighties and seventies dont tell me there all fade away

do u think that people will be watching ads from itv ad breaks 2010 in twenty years time cant think of one that stays in my memory even five minutes after ive seen it

  • i got a question how did the little tab on the spine of a Video cassette allow u record things? and when u took it off it would protect the recording?

  • @Welshman2008 The video has a lever switch inside which allows it to record or not, the audio cassettes use the same thing.

  • @Welshman2008 the little tab's quite clever init? must be a thing inside the video recorder that can feel if there's a space where the tab should be

  • Gosh! Never thought I'd see this ad again.

  • WOW! I LOVE THIS! I Remember It Way Back When I Was A Kiddy, Nice

  • It's 25 years on. Has anyone called in their 'lifetime guarantee'?

  • I was scared of this advert when I was a kid. I was born in 1982.

  • @Lazybabyz Likewise.

  • @Lazybabyz

    Me too.

  • @Lazybabyz

    ah so was I!

  • @Lazybabyz

    me too!

  • Ha !

more like.... re-record and get tangled up in ya machine !!! LOL

  • i wonder what they would say if i found a truck load of useless tapes?

  • i never got a new tape...couldnt be bothered...anyone else?

  • I recognise the voice, but can;t place it. Not Derek Guyler is it?

  • DarkAngel182 - It's Brian Wilde, who played Foggy in Last Of The Summer Wine and Barrowclough in Porridge.

  • THANKYOU!

    Thought it sounded familiar!

  • No it's the skeleton. It lives near me. I keep beetroot in my underpants

  • Really? I use mine for keeping tropical fish in!

  • Beautiful! Memories come flooding back! My Dad never used anything else! Trust the skeleton - he knows what he's talking about ;-)

  • Unless you had a crap vcr that chewed the fuck outa the tapes!

  • This advert always reminded me of my Grandad.

  • I am 27 aswell and I can remeber this advert being shown alot when I was child.

  • agree, I'm 27 now but this one's EARLY in my memories

  • hey im also 27 *High fives*

  • pity they dont use them no more, modern engineering made videos oblselete, love the advert though

  • shame scotch dont dvd-r make they would be shit hot lol

  • "re-record, not fade away!" demands a remix TBH

  • Anyone know when this advert stopped showing, because I remember it vividly, but I was only 2 in 1985

  • An apt embodiment of the product. The technology is now as dead as the skeleton.

  • i like the comment, very funny it made me laugh

  • I recorded this advert 15 years ago and now its faded away ... oh the irony

  • @Jez32uk but did you use scotch?

  • @RetroSpectreUK yeah i did but i got really confused when i lived in canada aged 11 and was told to buy scotch tape for school

  • @Jez32uk Excellent

  • @Jez32uk

I think my dad had something to do with this as well!!!.....his name was Alec Ovens

  • @Jez32uk

I think my dad had something to do with this as well!!!.....his name was Alec Ovens

  • I'm going to tell you how it's going to be

I'm now taken over by DVD

And something else that's called HD

So throw all your Scotch tapes away, throw all your Scotch tapes away, throw all your Scotch tapes away.

P.S. that would be today's advertising but I will never throw my Scotch tapes away!!!

  • Excellent!!!

That had me in stitches. Just what I needed after a shit day.

    Cheers

  • Ive had 3 DVD recorders that became faulty ....i still have some old VHS recording thats play really well ......have to say i preferred VHS ....dvd is not that perfect .....and Hard drives ! - dont get me started they go wrong and have problems too

  • This has never left my memory in the last 24 years. Weird how some things stay with you!

  • Lol i remember this on tv i just noticed the plant in the background timelapsing. As for the skele some dark humor from Skotch unless they are mocking us. Stating that we must be dead like the skele to watch/record tv programmes.

  • I always wondered why they used a skeleton lol

  • And then the DVD came...

  • You can watch them forever, until DVDs come out!

  • Omg I still remember that advert.

  • This is the most famous Scotch skeleton ad - there were ads to accompany it in the TV Times in late 1985.

  • i still remember the words after all these years!!!

  • I never realised Sir Menzies Campbell could bust moves like that.

  • Somebody please tell me how I remember this advert after all these years??????? :O

  • Does anybody have any more Scotch footage with the skeleton from 1991 1993 and 1994 it would be great to see some of them adverts from those years since I have not really seen them at all before and it would bring back loads of old memories

  • A classic.

  • And the moral of this is don't forget to eat

  • HA! There is no moral to this, Silly Goose!

  • I recorded everything on a scotch tape.

  • ahhh memories of this skeleton giving me nightmares lmao

  • I dont know why your scared of this advert for it is a great one especially with that skeleton advertising Scotch video tapes it is awesome

  • A bona fide masterpiece of advertising.

  • I taped a bunch of movies over Christmas back in the 80's (around 87/88) and this advert was still making the rounds... I loved it!

  • Was one of the films "The Ghost Train" with Arthur Askey? Thats when I saw this ad first!

  • Nah it was something else, actually it's on a couple of my tapes from then.

  • This is the oldest ad I remember. Funnily enough I had it recorded on a videotape.

  • Lemme guess, you recorded it on a Scotch videotape? LOL. I'm surprised to see an ad for a product from a company based in my hometown (St. Paul, Minnesota) all the way across the Atlantic. It's always a bit surprising to discover things being made almost in your own backyard having that kind of reach.

  • fantastic classic tv ad!

  • lol! I have aton of those Scotch Tapes from 1991 and 1992 etc. My mom recorded me on when I was little. I wonder if that still has its guarantee? lol

  • Do you reckon the life time garantuee is still valid? LOL!!

  • Ahaaaa lol nice one XD

  • @chrismumford i've just got a load of VHS tapes from storage and in the process of ripping them to the PC, after 3years in a humid storage locker all the cheaper tpes from poundland have snapped....my trusty scotch tapes from the 1980s are working fine...the advert doesnt lie it seems
