I have seen a similar practice. There are these things called "Ear Candles". I really do not think they work. They quote "Take out wax with the force from which is created by lighting the end of the candle whilst your head is sideways".

You lay on your side, put the cone end in your ear, and light the other end. As it burns, it makes a kind of vacuum in the tube, and the smoke goes down into your ear, and warmth of the smoke in your ear softens your ear wax, (cont'd)
