It must be in Christmas Island. I went there in 2008 and saw lots of robber crabs (aka coconut crabs). Actually they are around 30-40 yrs old to be that big so the residents respect them. It was really an unforgettable memory.

What an incredible place. Those are coconut crabs, the largest land dwelling arthropods in the world. They are also the largest species of hermit crab. The adults don't live in any other animal's shell, because they grow too large for it. The juveniles do, however. You don't know how lucky you were to see them. And, spiders are also cute. Some people I've seen are pretty scary looking, though.

Yes, they are coconut crabs (Birgus Latro), smallish ones actually. Cousin/ancestor to our pet land hermit crabs. They can crack open a coconut with those giant claws! These guys have especially beautiful colors!

I think these are coconut crabs, but I might be wrong. I know you're joking about them being spiders, so I'm not giving the species name because I thought that you really thought they were spiders, just giving the name in case you didn't know what kind of crabs they are.
