thats not correct. emo is a music genre indeed, but but in the past few years it spread through the media and became a commercial fashion phenomenon. so it is a music genre AND a fashion style. there are already way more "fashion emos" than "music emos", although the origin is in music; in hardcore punk, to be accurate. believe me, i know what i'm talking about, i wrote a paper about the emo culture

Don't get me wrong, I love Jimmy Eat World, but I hate when people miss categorize music. Just because the idea of a genre changed doesn't mean you can change the category to fit you're own perception, you wouldn't call Beethoven Metal just because Classical doesn't sound like a good genre (which it is). Although Beethoven was the HEAVIEST composer for his time, it still wouldn't be classified as Metal.

This IS Emo, regardless of what you'd consider it. Emo branched off of Hardcore Punk in the 80s, then got slower and more Pop-y in the 90s, Jimmy Eat World and Weezer, then became all about self loathing and self pity in the 2000s. Learn Music History before you try to correct people next time.

In the mid 1980s, Emo branched off of Hardcore Punk, but rather than taking a specific side about a political, economic, or social issue, they sang about how it made the people feel, rather than how it should've been changed. They still kept the fast speeds and vocal styles of Hardcore Punk.

Then in the mid 1990s, Emo changed again to talk about individuality and other things similar. To reject mainstream society and just be yourself, which is what this song is about. Jimmy Eat World has admitted they're Emo. They're apart of the 90s Emo scene. Then in early to mid 2000s, Emo shifted again, once it got mainstream, to sell out its original ideas of individuality and it became about conformity and self loathing for those who don't conform.
